The Gate...
The tunnel that connects the other world to ours...
Many years ago, after the gate first appeared, the world experienced many bizarre events.
One such example was the birth of humans awakened with powers. Their strength stays the same from when they were awakened - It never changes.
Those who received the power to cross the gate to destroy monsters and did this as their career were called "Hunters."

"Congratulations Sir, Madam, it's a boy!"
A nurse handed over a baby boy to his mother.
"It seems the Kasuga family will have one more successor to it's name. Have you decided what to name this child?" The Doctor looked at the woman as she gazed down at her child.
A single word escaped from her mouth.
"Arata..."
***
Arata wore his blazer as he looked at himself in the mirror. A dazzling gem was embroided at the side of his uniform and the logo of the school he attended could be seen as well.
Arata headed downstairs from his room, only to find his other family members already sitting at the dining table.
As expected, none of his family even bothered to turn their heads, much less greet him, as he headed down the stairs. Furthermore, no portion of his breakfast could be seen, which obviously meant that he was not even allowed to eat with his family.
However, Arata was already used to this scene as he left the house.
Outside, rain started gathering in the clouds and the train which was moving across the street cut apart the morning haze.
-- The train had arrived just outside the station of his school.
Arata walked along the path towards the Academy and finally, the haze caused by the dark clouds seemed to disperse and the Academy appeared before his eyes.
A large fountain square could be seen as flower beds decorated both sides along the path.
"Arata!" From behind, a girl's voice called out to him.
It was a girl Arata was very familiar with. The girl was waving to him enthusiastically. Sporting a cheerful smile, a small nose that sat perfectly upon her face, pink lips the epitome of perfection, with sleek black hair and large alluring eyes, wearing the standard issue female uniform--
"Kaguya..."
"You are always looking so depressed. You should cheer up a little more!" Kaguya waltz up to him as the two continued walking side by side. They were in their final year of high school and very soon, they would both graduate.
She was one of the few people in the whole school who treated him kindly.
As they were walking, Arata felt the usual stares of mockery directed at him -- gazes of exclusion -- various feelings of contempt, pity and embarrassment...
"Uwaa, isn't he that rank E guy...?" "Don't bother yourself with such trash. Associate with him and your level will drop to his level." "The weakest rank E...can there really be such a useless person?" "To think the weakest 'Hunter' would go to our school...what a disgrace." "If it was me, I would rather just quit than continue being useless." "Hey stop that, he isn't even a Hunter. I heard his family wouldn't allow him to be one." "I heard quite a few from the Kasuga family is in the Draw Sword Guild." "Oh right! His brother was a graduate from our school as well...to think that such a person would be related..."
Unfortunately, most of what they said was true. It was a known established fact that none from his family had ever attained a rank lower than B. Therefore, when Arata took the test to determine his stats, all that came back was extreme disappointment. Even for a rank E, his magic energy value was only 11.
When considering the fact that the lowest average value for rank E - the bottom rank - was around 70 to 100, Arata was no different from a regular person. His magic energy was illogically, nonsensically low. Therefore, after his family found out that such an existence had appeared in their family, everything changed for him. The obvious treatment that even bordered hatred...Arata experienced that every single day ever since he measured his rank. To make things worse, several of his school mates, who were coincidentally there when he got his rank, resulting in nearly the entire school knowing about it. Even though he was an 'Awakened', most of the regular students mocked him. That was just how human nature was. Even if these regular students were not 'Awakened' they still decided to judge those who did. It was precisely because they themselves didn't get any power, that they mocked him who 'awakened' a power that was no different from a regular human.
They all felt he was a disgrace who brought shame to their school. In a way, their school also became famous because of him.
And, there was also another reason why he was mocked. His school had another student, a student who...
"Don't mind them Arata. I for one, know that you are not weak at all!" Kaguya tried to cheer him up from the side but Arata felt those words from the other students create yet another range of complex emotions within him, however, he still smiled as he replied, "Of course I don't mind them. How long do you think I have endured such comments already...I am already used to it."
Even after entering the classroom, he found himself on the receiving end of a multitude of scornful glares and annoyed tongue clicks from a majority of the male students as soon as he set foot in the classroom. None of the female students seemed all too pleased to see him either. It would have been fine were they simply ignoring him but they too gave him stares of contempt.
Arata did his best to ignore his classmates and went to his seat while Kaguya went to her own.
Tch, tongues started clicking and the male students started grounding their teeth as they glowered at him. Kaguya was known as one of the most beautiful girls in school, considered a goddess by many. She always seemed to have a smile on her face, and her knack for looking after others combined with her strong sense of responsibility made her one of the most respected students at Arata's school. Morever, she was tolerant and understanding, to the point where no one had ever seen her look unhappy before.
As it was, the students couldn't stand the fact that Arata was close to such a perfect girl, especially considering the fact that he was almost looked down upon entirely by the whole school. They thought he was simply a failure squandering her kindness.
Finally, the bell signaling the start of classes rang and the teacher walked into the classroom. The teacher began the morning announcements, seemingly too used to the atmosphere in the classroom to care as well.

Arata turned his head out to the window, as he glanced up at the sky.
