3 | Facing Rebecca

PEARL

After listening to Caroline, I was demented with worry.

Who is Rebecca? Only I could break the spell but how? Under what situation will I be able to break the spell. Why did she say when I'll find Theo I'll be heartbroken.

"Christ! We need to hurry Pearl. It's already dark." Eva's anxious voice broke my trance of thought.

I look up to see black clouds had started hovering over us. My heart thumped against the ribcage. I have heard about the fate of pets. Only few last for few months. They are chained and grossly ill-treated.

Usually the pets are someone who don't have anyone in this world, they are sold by the merchants but sometimes the vampire pick the people of their choice who are present at market and that's the only reason grand ma never allows me or Eva to go out on this day.

We both started walking swiftly, looking around we found the people inside cage shivering with their heads lowered. Their clothes ragged and dirty while their faces were enveloped with marks and bloodstains. Merchants selling them were wearing a hoodie covering their faces. We could hear a low gaps or cries from inside the cages. I was pained by their beaten appearance.

Our movements quickened, just when we were about to cross the market boundaries a thunderstorm intervened halting us on our track. Our breaths caught in our throats when we saw a black fog arising right in front of us. We quickly retreated our steps back, Eva pulled my hand and I unsteadily ran along with her and hid behind a truck.

I had seen witches and wolves but never came across a vampire in my life and now I will be seeing not one but bunch of blood craving vampires at once.

I and Eva ducked down our heads moving further behind the truck. The wind was blasting as furiously as ever, and now from a distance came the low rumble of thunder. Beads of sweats hammered my forehead.

A deathlike silence sweeped our surrounding causing us to hold our breath. Eva had her palm pressed against her mouth. We heard a creak sound of rusty gate being opened with force followed by a shrill cry of a girl and clanging of metal.

A shiver coursed down my spine when piercing cries spread the entire area. I shut my eyes close while snuggling closer to truck tire. I was muttering silent prayers under my breath when suddenly I felt a gust of wind hitting me, the warmth of tire escaped in thin air. I pried my eyes open only to see truck flying in air and then hitting the tree trunk with a deafening sound.

I jumped a little plopping on floor with my palms covering my mouth. I hoist my eyelids only to gasp in horror. There stood a vampire with bloodshot eyes and huge cut across his eyes. Blood was trickling down his jaws with his long fangs pressed on his lower lip.

I and Eva crawled backwards but he held Eva's foot and pulled her towards him. I felt a flutter of trepidation in my stomach. Eva shook like a leaf in thunderstorm. Her eyes were open while tears streamed down her cheek.

The vampire titled his head and gazed at Eva's neck making me cry with terror. He scooped to our level and then sniffed Eva's neck making both of us scream. Just when he was about to dip his fangs into her skin he was jerked away from her with force.

I quickly wrap my arms around Eva while she moved closer to me. She was shivering, her hands had turned pale and were cold as ice.

We both looked up to see a female vampire standing in front of us. Just the sight of her was enough to increase the terror within me by ten folds. She had pale skin and red glowing eyes. She had an aura which radiated power. She was extremely beautiful, even with her fangs on display she looked divine.

My breathing came out ragged as she peered at us with interest. The moment I looked at her I knew she is a bad news. She looked fierce and unscrupulous. She trailed her tongue over her long fangs and stretched her hand out. Both I and Eva glided towards her even without our will, I felt a pull towards her.

She trailed her eyes between us and grasped Eva by her hair and jerked her head backwards.

"No please…" I muttered, my voice felt distant to my own ears.

She snapped her head in my direction with vexation swimming in her eyes. I retreated backwards only to be pulled back with force, she grabbed me in a chokehold. I try to pull her hand away from my neck but her hold was so strong that I was struggling to breathe. A shooting pain took birth in my neck while she tightened her grip on my neck. My eyes went wide while tears streamed down my cheeks. She brought me dangerously closer to her and whispered, "No human is qualified enough to speak to me — Rebecca Morwant, future Vampire Queen…" with that she threw me on the ground. I yelped in pain while wrapping my hand around my aching neck.

Rebecca? She is Rebecca Caroline was talking about.

Rebecca trailed her nail on Eva's neck who looked tormented. With a cruel smile laced on her face she pierced her nail inside Eva's neck causing blood to stream out.

Rebecca then brought her blood smeared nail near her mouth and licked it whilst closing her eyes.

"Just like I predicted — Sweet…" she opened her eyes and stared at Eva. "I'll enjoy destroying your beauty and draining all the sweet blood from your body." She let out a maniacal laugh.

And within a blink of eye she disappeared along with Eva. I swiftly trail my eyes in the surrounding screaming Eva's name but I couldn't find Rebecca or Eva anywhere.

I plunged on ground screaming Eva's name. My heart felt heavy cause I was reason for Eva's condition. I brought her here, I pushed her towards hell. I grip my hair and cry out loud. I was helpless. I couldn't save Eva. I am a sinner.
