Violet's Wrath

From the moment she stepped into the cafe, Violet could sense that her best friend, Evan had been staring at her. She did not have to ask him to know the reason why. Violet could tell that her mood and expression were not that great at the moment and her friend, Evan Xiao was worried.

After that supposedly blind date with a stupid jerk called Ryan Chen, Violet came home feeling upset at his insult and disgusted that her parents would for a second think that he would be a perfect match for her.

Once she returned home, Violet ranted about that bad luck encounter with Ryan to her parents. When she was done, Violet then picked up the phone and continued to rant to her cousin, Sarah. Violet was so mad about his insult that she could not vent her anger no matter how much she talked about it.

Sensing that her friend would not stop staring at her, Violet finally let out a sigh and put aside her equipment beside her. She turned around with her hands on her hips and raised a brow. "What?"

"Nothing," Evan quickly retracted his gaze and continued to work on the fondant.

"If you're curious about my date, well, let me just tell you that it didn't go well," Violet said as she continued to measure some sugar for another batch of cupcake frosting. "The good news is… we don't have to plan anything to sabotage my upcoming dates. Isn't that wonderful?"

Hearing the anger in her voice, Evan was at a loss for what he should say. At the thought that it would not be wise to upset his friend, Evan continued to shape the yellow-colored fondant into a duck for baby shower cupcakes. He brushed some water to glue the head to the body.

After a brief silence between them, Violet turned around to look at him again. "Do you know what upset me so much?"

Evan looked up. "What?"

"He offered me some money to cancel the silly engagement," Violet said as she laughed. "He said that I was only after his family's wealth. Don't you think that was an insult? Who does he think he is? Such an arrogant bastard."

Evan could see that Violet was furious now that she began to curse.

When Evan saw Brian's head popping from the front kitchen to check on them, he knew that he should warn Violet to lower her voice. "You may want to tone down a bit. The customer might hear you and run," he warned.

"You're right," Violet said and took a deep breath to calm herself. She turned around to take some butter, a tray of eggs, a bottle of vanilla essences, flour, a carton of milk, sugar, and a pinch of salt and dumped them all into her KitchenAid mixer. Then, she switched the mixer to medium speed. Violet continued to stare into the batter before she finally raised her head again. "I'm sorry. It's just that I've never met anyone like him before. It's very upsetting. Every time I think about the meeting, I have this urge to strangle someone."

Evan subconsciously took a step back. As if he had noticed what he had done, Evan let out a dry cough and turned to Violet. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Violet replied. "After venting my feeling for the last few hours, I think I'll be alright. Since that stupid jerk dared to insult me, I think my mom will help me to call off that engagement."

"That's good news."

"Uh-huh." Violet turned off the mixer, scraped its side, and turned it on again. "I just hope that my dad wouldn't bring this arrangement up ever again. I certainly didn't want to get engaged to someone like him. There's no way I could tolerate someone as rude as that person. I hope I won't have to see his face ever again."

Evan nodded as he listened to her ranting about her date. "I understand. If I were you, I would have slapped him real hard or splashed some water on his face."

Violet finally laughed at his words. She looked at the clock and raised a brow when she noticed that Evan was staring at the entrance. "Stop staring at the entrance. Sarah would not show up today. She told me that she had an audition."

Evan froze. "What are you talking about?"

Violet switched off the mixer, browsed the orders on the board, and glanced towards Evan. "I may not be an observant person, but I noticed the way you look at my cousin, Evan. You like her. A lot."

"Where did this come from? I thought we were talking about you and that stupid jerk." Evan focused on his ducks' fondant, acting as if he wasn't bothered with anything. After thirty seconds of silence, he put aside the fondant on the table and breathed. "Okay. You're right. I do like her. I can never keep a secret from you, can I?"

Hearing his confession, Violet clapped her hands enthusiastically. Her gloomy mood from earlier that morning suddenly disappeared. Just because she might not have too much luck in the romance department, it doesn't mean that she would not be happy to hear that someone else's spring might start soon.

Anyway, Evan Xiao was her best friend and Sarah Wu was her cousin. The two of them were among her favorite people. If they both get together, Violet would naturally be happy.

"But I don't think she felt the same way towards me," Evan said as he lowered his gaze.

"Why do you think so?"

"She never really sees me more as a friend. I don't think she noticed that I have feelings for her. I tried to drop some hints every now and then to show her that I liked her. But she doesn't seem to get it."

"See, this is your problem," Violet said with a sigh. "If you like her, you should just say it. Why bother dropping hints? She might not notice anything. After all, Sarah might notice everything that going on around everyone else, but not on herself."

"You think so?" There was a hint of hesitation in Evan's voice.

"Yes," Violet assured him. "I know so. Because I honestly think she likes you too."
