That was the Truth, Wasn't It?

"Violet." The old man looked at his granddaughter disapprovingly. He was not pleased with Violet's tone of voice.

Although he did not know anything about Violet's relationship with Ryan, this man was still their guest. She should not be rude.

Violet had a sheepish look on her face. "Grandpa. I was just surprised to see him here."

"It's alright." Ryan stood up and smiled politely at the old man. He walked closer to Violet and whispered, "We need to talk."

Violet pursed her lips as she observed Ryan closely.

She could not understand the reason this man showed up at her grandfather's place. She remembered how Ryan was unwilling to go on a date with her.

Grandpa cleared his throat. "Then, I'll leave you two in here." He looked at his granddaughter and smiled gently. "Violet, you should talk with your friend. He came a long way looking for you." He walked over to Violet's side and patted her on the shoulder. Grandpa raised his head and looked at Ryan next. "Young man, when you're done talking with my granddaughter, you should join us for dinner."

Ryan and Violet both watched as the old man left the living room.

There was a long silence between them. Then, they both turned to look at each other, both of them were unsure of what to say to each other.

"What are you doing here?" Violet broke the silence. She crossed her arms on her chest as she gave Ryan a lookover.

The corner of Ryan's lips began to twitch as he noticed the way Violet was looking at him. "I heard that you are here and decided to visit." Of course, he was lying. "Why didn't you tell me that you were going to visit your grandfather?"

They were on the phone that morning but Ryan had not heard anything from her.

Violet scoffed. "I don't think I need to report anything to you." She turned around and sat on the sofa.

Ryan followed her and stopped as he got closer. "You do. It was written in our agreement that we should inform each other of our activities. Are you telling me that you're going to break that agreement now?"

Violet bit her lips. She knew he was right and there was nothing that she could say right now to debate with him. "Why didn't you at least call me before you came?"

Ryan took a few steps towards Violet. "Cupcake, I've called you a few times, but you didn't pick up my call."

"Who are you calling cupcake," Violet snapped. "Stop that.."

"You really need to pay attention to your cell phone. What if someone called you for an emergency?" Ryan said.

"They can always try Grandpa's landline or Sarah's number."

Violet was the kind of person who would always forget her phone. However, this time, she had noticed Ryan's phone call but had deliberately ignored him.

Ryan was annoying and talking to him could make her blood pressure shoot up.

"Look," Ryan said. He took a deep breath and stared at Violet. "I'm not here to have another argument with you. I came here to pay a visit to your Grandpa so that both our families wouldn't suspect anything about our relationship."

Violet snickered. "Do you think I would believe that? The only reason you would come here to see me or my grandpa was that your mother forced you to."

There was a long silence in the room.

Violet stared at Ryan for a long time. Then, she realized what she had said out loud. "Oh my God." She had a hand on her chest. "That was the truth, wasn't it? Your mother forced you to come here, didn't she?"

Although she had interacted with Ryan's mother briefly, she could understand that older woman a little bit.

Meanwhile, Ryan was pretty obedient to his mother.

Not that she could say anything about that. After all, she was someone who had to listen to her parents too.

His jaw hardened when he heard what Violet had said. Ryan tried to swallow, wanting to get rid of a lump in his throat. "What makes you think so?"

"I may not know you very well, Ryan Chen. But I know that you're not the kind of guy who would voluntarily go through a two-hour drive just to visit your pretend girlfriend. Unless your mother intervenes and makes you go through it."

Ryan stared at Violet for a long time before deciding not to argue. "You are right," He admitted. "My mother thought it would be good for me to come over. I have to come. Otherwise, we might be forced to lengthen the duration of this trial date again."

Violet chuckled. "I'm sorry. I know your mother can be difficult sometimes, but I certainly wasn't expecting something like this."

Dating someone like Ryan could be very difficult. Violet began to wonder if his mother was the reason no one wanted to date Ryan.

His lips curled into a painful smile.

Ryan found that he could not come up with anything to defend his mother. "Don't worry. I don't have any intention of staying here for long. I'm going to leave now that I have shown my face to you and your grandfather."

Violet watched as Ryan turned around to leave.

She suddenly felt that he looked quite pitiful. After all, he had to drive for a couple of hours just to show his face.

Violet held up her hand and sighed. "Wait. Since you're already here, why don't you join us for dinner?"

Ryan turned around and looked at Violet with surprise.

Violet's suggestion made Ryan stare at her like she had lost her mind.

They don't get along with each other. Therefore, he was shocked to hear her inviting him for a meal.

Of course, Violet noticed the way Ryan was looking at her.

"Look. I'm trying to be courteous here," Violet said. "Grandpa did invite you to have dinner with us earlier, didn't he? I'm sure my grandpa would not allow you to step out of his house without having dinner first." Seeing that Ryan continued to stay silent, Violet then continued, "Just think of it as my peace offering for causing you to take a two-hour trip to see me here."
