Chapter 448: Healthy Child-2

Ian was left completely unsatisfied by Dr. Sancho's recollection of events. There were too many holes, too many uncertainties, and not enough facts. Even after being handcuffed and tossed into the back of Ian's car, the doctor refused to be forthcoming. He did ask after Mina several times, and Ian decided to tell the man the truth as Mina saw it.

Dr. Sancho turned red with anger at Ian's words and he began thrashing in the backseat of the car. Ian and Zane were both shocked by the man's outburst. It was something they would expect from a parent, and once again Ian had the sinking feeling that something was off.

"It was you who took her," the man shouted, and Ian knew that meant the doctor had been staying connected with Mina up until adulthood.

"Are you in love with her?" Ian asked, almost sick with the thought of the man lusting over someone he watched grow up from a child.

"Don't be disgusting," the man snarled.

"Then explain this reaction. What is Mina to you?"

"Do you know how many children I've destroyed for your family? You think the healthy child initiative was just for combat? As soon as Dr. Greaves found Mina, he flagged her for a breeding program." Ian and Zane exchanged glances with one another. Without the security clearance of Ian's cousin, there were many things they did not know.

"You killed him, didn't you?" Zane asked, but his question was ignored.

"Mina was the perfect child, and with the words of a stranger her parents went from being loving and kind, to cold and distant. Every time that I worked with her, a little bit of the light that had been in her eyes was snuffed out, and I could not take it. I told myself that if I had to save one child, it would be her, and I did."

"You are the reason she was never trained with my family," Ian added, he felt as though the man had stopped him from meeting Mina earlier, just like whoever scrapped her resume had done.

"And I am also the reason her genes weren't harvested for science." The car fell into silence with those words.

Ian had no plans to spare Dr. Sancho if the man did not tell the truth, but he did take the man's words to heart. It was a catch-twenty-two; if Mina had been successfully drafted into the Lee family, she would have been trained to be a killer, and if the breeding program were real, she would have suffered as an experiment as well.

Given the options, Ian wondered if what had happened between himself and Mina was not the best possible outcome for the woman, but he also found that thought to be a sad one. Trouble seemed to follow Mina wherever she went, and he could now understand why the girl thought her own existence was a curse. That was much the way Ian had felt when people around him kept getting hurt to protect him, and it was why he had devoted himself to being the person he became.

"Does she know?" Zane suddenly asked.

"She knows that I helped her, but she doesn't know about anything else."

----

Mina awoke in a familiar hospital room, she felt heavy and without provocation she began to cry. She was miserable, and she just wanted to enjoy her last days in peace, but President Lee wouldn't allow it, he never would. Mina could not hold back the tears that were falling from her eyes, and in truth she did not know why she was crying.

"Are you still crying?" Mina heard, and she was surprised to see Terrence standing in the doorway, he looked sympathetic, but she knew he was not. "Do you need something?" he asked, taking a step into the room, and Mina shook her head.

"Please stop that Terrence." The man looked at Mina as if he were confused, but she glared at him until his concerned expression morphed into a blank one.

"Why are you crying?" he asked, which was more like the man and Mina appreciated it.

"Someone hurt me," she replied.

"What are your injuries?" Mina let out an involuntary chuckle because she had no physical injuries, her feelings were hurt, but she did not know how to explain it to Terrence, so she told him to ask Doctor Witt.

After a while, Terrence became uncomfortable and left, making Mina feel even worse because she knew her behavior had confused the man. The only thing she could think that came close to how she was feeling, was how Terrence must have felt when his parents pretended not to know him, but she would never mention that though. Mina was not a cruel enough person to do such a thing.

Terrence came to check in on Mina throughout the day, he made sure to tell her that he was keeping Doctor Rebecca occupied and she found herself chuckling because she knew he must have been doing something mischievous. He kept patting her shoulder, which Mina knew was as much affection as the man could show. She could not help but to wonder what sort of person Terrence would have been if he had grown up within a family and not within an organization, but something told her that he would probably have been institutionalized.

A full day had passed before the Witt doctors entered the room and Mina pretended not to see them. She had only just started to feel better, but her emotions were still all over the place, forcing her in and out of sleep. The only comfort she had was seeing how Terrence was devoted to an area of study that had the potential to help people if he could ever get his idea to work.

"Mina I did not know you would have that kind of reaction," Doctor Witt said. "It does not make sense to me."

"Does everyone have to fit within a category?" She asked in a monotone voice.

"In some ways yes. I just do not understand how you slipped through the cracks. I checked every file, and you were never a part of the healthy child initiative." Mina scoffed. They would never find her in the healthy child initiative files because someone was nice enough to replace her records with that of her sister's. Without that person's help, Mina probably would have been like Terrence, which was probably a better possibility.

"I participated, and the doctor who saw me told my parents that I was dangerous to them. He tried to have me committed." Mina did not want to involve Dr. Sancho, but they were already looking in his direction, so she wanted to redirect them.

"I made a mistake." Mina knew it must have been hard for Doctor Witt to admit his error, but she did not care.

"I know you didn't act on your own orders, so you can save the excuses. Just tell President Lee to hurry up and kill me, because I really do not want to play this game with him anymore." Rebecca shot her brother a curious look. If their experiment had pushed Mina to the point of not wanting to live, they felt as though their lives would be left hanging in the balance. As if working with one mind, the doctors remembered that Mina was fond of their brother and they simultaneously hurried to find him.

Mina did not at first recognize the voice speaking, she turned to face the source and smiled when she saw who it was. Bressaw came to sit at the edge of the bed patting Mina's leg. He handed her his phone, but before she saw that Tara was on the line, she caught sight of the date, and was grateful that her boss had rescinded her RSVP to Miss Lisa's event on her behalf. Otherwise, Mina was sure the woman would have taken her no show personally, and if she ever left the Lee facility, she wanted to do so without worry.
