Chapter 560: Soulmates

Drax received a probing call from Ian that confused him. There was, in fact, a small gathering scheduled to occur at his home. Since Mills had been clear about her opposition to him, Drax's mother had planned to hold a sort of matchmaking event disguised as a family function.

Drax of course was uninterested, but he was twenty-eight, and his mother was complaining that she needed more than one grandchild. The very thought of children was nearly enough to drive Drax insane and his cluelessness about how to proceed tortured him.

Mina told him that Mills needed him, and he had believed it was true, but when he went to visit her, she seemed fine. There was also what she had said in the hospital. She told him that losing their baby was for the best. She did not even entertain the idea of them being together, and the truth was that he had to move on, the same way she had done.

Still, something was nagging at Drax. Ian was not his usual cold self on the phone when he had called and that worried him. Drax knew that the Loam family had come to collect Mina, and he wanted to believe that was the reason for the call, but he could hear the woman whispering questions in the background and could not help but to wonder what they were up to.

Not seeing the harm it could cause, Drax invited the pair before ending the call. Worst case scenario, Mina would pull some sort of stunt and try to sabotage him as retribution for Mills, which would not be that bad.

It was an uncomfortable event for Drax, especially because Mills' brother was still lingering around his family home. No one could move him without Cam's approval, and so far, no guarantee about his safety had been made.

By default, Milo was invited to the event, and Drax's family had already arranged for Cala to be flown out from Sani as his date. They hoped it would distract him from the bitterness of seeing Drax being introduced to single women. They wanted Drax to choose one of the women to accompany him to the Couples Day charity event, and perhaps marry.

Mina was at work at the community center when a boy she once tutored came in. It was odd, and she knew he was there for her based solely on the way he looked around. Curious, Mina approached, the boy looked nervous, and she wondered if he was falling behind in school again.

"Can you meet me outside for a second?" Mina nodded, she had to take out the trash anyway, so she saw no harm in stepping out of the center for just a few minutes. She told her supervisor where she would be, and the man agreed, but reminded her to be careful.

Mina was not surprised that her supervisor worried about her safety, of all the girls in her town, she was least likely to go looking for trouble, but trouble did seem to find her, and he had already helped her get out of it before.

"Hey Justin, is everything okay? What can I help you with?" Mina was unable to fully approach because Justin pushed her against the wall of the community center and held a piece of cloth over her mouth. There was a strong chemical smell that made her nauseous and slightly dizzy.

"Why isn't it working?" Another male voice asked, and Mina's eyes sprang toward Harry, one of Justin's friends. "Let's just go man. Mina is a nice girl. She won't say anything." Mina heaved, because the chemical laced cloth was still being held over her nose and mouth, and the nausea had become too much to hold back.

"Mina, please forgive us." Justin kissed the top of her head before sprinting away, leaving her to wobble to the ground, unable to hold back her lunch.

It took all of ten minutes for Mina to compose herself, and in that time her supervisor had already come looking for her. When he saw she was well enough to stand, he pulled her back into the community center with a look on his face that told her he was angry.

"That is the second time someone has tried to hurt you in a week. Mina, what is going on?"

"I don't know," she admitted, and the man sighed.

"If this doesn't stop, I am going to have to let you go." Mina panicked.

"Please don't, my family needs my help."

"And they have an older daughter to do that." Mina looked down in surrender. "I will pay you for the day, but I don't want you coming back until you figure out what's going on. In the meantime, call someone to pick you up." The man handed Mina his phone and she called Dr. Sancho.

----

When Mina opened her eyes, she was half expecting to be waking up in Dr. Sancho's office. Whatever chemical was used on her back then left her dizzy and nauseous for hours, and the only thing she could do was sleep.

Realizing it was just a dream, Mina got out of bed, completed her morning routine, and went to President Lee's study. The sun had not fully risen in the sky, but she was not at all surprised to see the man working behind his desk. He looked up at her, by now guessing that she had another bad dream.

"Want to talk about it?" Mina shook her head. The last thing she wanted to do was tell President Lee that her own sister plotted to have her kidnapped and ransomed to trick their parents into financing her escape.

Had Sadie still been alive, Mina would not have known, but after the accident, Justin had come clean, confessing that he only agreed to help because he needed money, and was angry that she had stopped tutoring him.

Mina did not at first believe Justin, but the boy who had aggressively tried to 'drive her home' had also approached with a similar story. The teens were far from friendly with one another, so they would not have worked together on a cover.

Besides, Mina knew there was truth in the boy's words. Sadie had been uncharacteristically secretive beforehand and in the days after, she blamed herself for everything, especially when Doctor Sancho told her that Mina could have been killed. Mina had collected the cloth that was used on her, so they were able to find it was soaked in accelerant.

"President Lee, do Lee soldiers have to do everything you tell them?" Mina asked to break the silence.

"Short of me ordering them to kill themselves; yes." Mina nodded. "Why?"

"I don't think it's a good idea for me to move, but I would like to visit my friends often." Ian had to fight back the smile that was threatening to show itself.

"Okay, but what does that have to do with Lee soldiers?"

"I want you to order Dom to move in with the girls and I need him to see it as a job."

"Are you sure? Dom can be-" Mina cut the man off because she did not want to hear it. She knew who Dom was, but it did not change the fact that he had been more of a gentleman toward her than many other men.

"You are the wrong person to judge him."

"Mina, you know the women you read about were paid right?"

"Eww."

"No, not like that. I mean, they were-" Ian was cut off again.

"President Lee, you do not need to explain. Just know that Dom is not a bad person."

"No Mina, I feel like I have to explain, because you have the wrong idea."

"Okay," she said, waiting for the explanation. All she could think when she received it was how perfect President Lee and Miss Lisa were for one another. She schemed to keep him, and he schemed to push her away.

"Why does your face look like that?"

"I just hope you made the right choice." Mina believed that President Lee had given up on his soulmate. "So will you order it?"
