Fight or Flight*

While Gabriel was away, I crawled and leaned right over Leif to see if he was still breathing.

Bad idea, Leif chose that exact moment to open his eyes and grabbed me to his chest in a deadly bear hug.

I screamed down into my belly looking for the current but all that was left was weak static. I had already discharged all the voltage stored up in my muscles.

My arms and legs had no strength and I crumpled under his renewed attack. Leif fell on top of me, pinning me to the ground as he pulled a bronze knife.

He pushed off of me, raising his knife high over his head. He paused for a brief moment. I thought he wouldn't do it, but I saw his eyes harden. He brought it down directly over my heart.

I closed my eyes, preparing for the inevitable.

The knife made a dozen of pinging noises as it shattered and scattered off my skin. He had just a moment to register what had happened before a foot connected with his head and sent him flying off of me.

Gabriel jumped on Leif with a vicious snarl and the two of them began to fight so fast I could barely see their hands move.

They punched and grabbed and gouged at each other.

"Gabriel, I'm not the enemy here. Why are you attacking me?" Leif said with wide eyes. "There is something you need to know about Cassandra."

"Leave, Cassandra," Gabriel commanded at me as he bared his teeth in a scowl, motioning at the pile of clothes he brought on the floor. "Dress yourself up."

"I can't," I said as I tried to stand but then I fell back down on the ground with an unsteady thump.

I don't even know what just happened. I couldn't believe my eyes.

The knife was broken into pieces. I realized because of the necklace Madame Eliz—or perhaps, Aphrodite gave to me, I was impervious to weapons.

"Cassandra!" Gabriel demanded. "Get the fuck out of here."

"I'll stay with you," I replied seriously, struggling to control my diction and my fuzzy brain as best as I could. I still felt lightheaded, but I fought my way through it.

"Gabriel. Stop this nonsense. We have to kill her before she gets away." Leif reminded Gabriel. "Don't forget that she's the enemy here."

Gabriel didn't respond.

"Are you out of your damn mind?" Leif ran his tongue over his teeth, a sure sign of irritation. "You chose that cursed girl over your House? Our Kind?"

Gabriel's jaw tensed for a minute.

"We must kill the girl." Leif practically shouted at Gabriel.

When Gabriel faced me, his blue eyes were tortured and Leif's expression was grim. "Go, Cassandra. I'll handle this."
