Our Lives Become a Musical

Teri's POV

"That spider lady…" Teri muttered, resting her finger on her chin.

"Muffet."

"That was her name?" Ray asked, glancing at Frisk. They nodded.

"She said something about…" Teri hesitated, trying to remember Muffet's exact words. "Someone with a sweet smile that changed shape warning her about us."

"So?" Poppy raised an eyebrow.

"Why would someone warn her about us? We're no threat."

"To offer her money," Clover replied, shrugging. "Like she said. Codiciosa... Who charges nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine gold for donuts or cider?! Am I even getting that number right?!"

"She's probably desperate," Kat commented.

"That's not an excuse for unfair prices!" Clover exclaimed, slamming his fist into the ground.

"Capitalism kinda is though," Poppy added with a shrug. Teri raised an eyebrow. "What? It's true."

"You do know that none of us know what that is, right?" Ray asked, cocking his head. Poppy shrugged. Teri stood up, stretching out her legs and wiping the webbing off her clothes. She cast a glance at the wall. Her eyes widened at a poster of Mettaton in a spotlight. Teri squinted at it.

"What is this?" she asked, pointing to it. Kat stood at Teri's side. She glanced at the poster, her head tilting to the side.

"Another Mettaton show I'd guess," she replied with a shrug.

"Mettaton?" Ray paused to grunt. "Let me guess. He's waiting for us in the next room with another bizarre setup to get us killed." That will end up not killing us.

"Most likely," Clover grunted, pushing himself to his feet.

"Well, let's go then," Frisk replied, walking through the hall with their hands in their pockets. The next room was a much darker purple, almost blue with houses in the distance and a balcony with a set of stairs leading to the top. It almost looked like a stage.

"OH? THOSE HUMANS…" Teri glanced up at the balcony. Mettaton was peeking out from behind some set piece. "COULD IT BE…?" He moved into the window, revealing that he was wearing a fabulous blue dress. "MY TRUE LOVES?" A slow tune began to play as Mettaton rolled down the ramp.

"Is he for real?" Poppy murmured, pointing at Mettaton. Teri didn't answer. Her head swayed back and forth to the music.

"OH MY LOVES!" Mettaton's singing filled the whole room and sent a burst of warmth through Teri. He rolled around the room as he continued. "PLEASE RUN AWAY…" How is he hitting these high notes?! Poppy let out a grunt. She tried to walk away only for the exit to be blocked by a forcefield like the one in the kitchen. Frisk went the other way to which the same thing happened. "MONSTER KING… FORBIDS YOUR STAY…" Teri's head continued to sway side to side as a smile formed on her lips. "HUMANS MUST… LIVE FAR APART… EVEN IF…" Mettaton put his hands over his face as if he were crying. "IT BREAKS MY HEART… THEY'LL PUT YOU…" Pink petals rained down from the sky. Teri stood still. The petals sprinkled down into her hair. "IN THE DUNGEON… IT'LL SUCK… AND THEN YOU'LL DIE A LOT…" Mettaton began filing his nails. His gloved… robotic nails… Teri raised an eyebrow, though she was unable to stop smiling. "REALLY SAD… YOU'RE GONNA DIE… CRY CRY CRY… SO SAD IT'S HAPPENING." Teri clapped.

Poppy nudged her. "Teri, no."

"Teri yes," she retorted.

"TERI YES." Everyone glanced at Mettaton. He cleared his throat. "SO SAD! SO SAD THAT YOU ARE GOING TO THE DUNGEON." Mettaton rolled away, pulling out a remote control. "WELL, TOODLES!" he exclaimed, dropping his dramatic performance. He pressed the button and the floor beneath Teri disappeared. Screams filled the air. However, Teri touched the ground only moments later. Mettaton floated down after them. "OH NO! WHATEVER SHALL I DO? MY LOVES HAVE BEEN CAST INTO THE DUNGEON. A DUNGEON WITH A PUZZLE SO DASTARDLY, MY PARAMOURS WILL SURELY PERISH!" Teri glanced ahead to see a conveyor belt leading to a floor many different coloured tiles. Oh no. "OH, HEAVENS HAVE MERCY! THE HORRIBLE COLOURED TILE MAZE! EACH COLOURED TILE HAS ITS OWN SADISTIC FUNCTION. FOR EXAMPLE, A GREEN TILE WILL SOUNDS A NOISE, AND THEN YOU MUST FIGHT A MONSTER. RED TILES WILL…ACTUALLY, WAIT A SECOND. DIDN'T WE SEE THIS PUZZLE ABOUT A HUNDRED ROOMS AGO? THAT'S RIGHT. YOU REMEMBER ALL THE RULES, DON'T YOU?"

"Actually we-"

"GREAT…" Mettaton cut Clover off. "THEN I WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME REPEATING THEM!! OH, AND YOU'D BETTER HURRY. BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH IN THIRTY SECONDS…" Flames appeared behind them. "YOU'LL BE INCINERATED BY THESE JETS OF FIRE!" Teri's eyes widened as Mettaton cackled. "OH, MY POOR LOVES! I'M SO FILLED WITH GRIEF, I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING! GOOD LUCK, DARLINGS!" Mettaton then began singing.

Frisk's POV

"Everyone, follow me." Frisk gestured to the others as they made their way onto the conveyor belt. They walked onto the first green tile, which for some reason didn't make a sound or summon a monster. Then Frisk continued to blue and green tiles before stopping in front of a yellow tile.

"Chara, little help?" Frisk asked looking around.

"I don't know!" they exclaimed. "Try purple!" Frisk stepped onto the orange tile, to which a sweet smell filled the air. Frisk stepped onto the purple tile, filling the air with a sour smell and immediately sliding the group onto the blue tile ahead. They walked right over the water tiles with ease. Then onto a pink one, a green one, then two orange tiles before stopping in front of another blue tile.

"Wrong way!" Chara gasped. "Turn around!" Frisk made their way to the bottom again, squeezing in between Kat and Clover.

"Why are the purple ones lemon-scented?!" Poppy exclaimed as the group slid across the purple tiles. "That doesn't make sense."

"Who cares about sense!" Ray exclaimed, skidding to a halt on an orange tile. He stepped toward a blue tile.

"WAIT!" Frisk exclaimed, blocking him with their arm. "Stepping on a blue tile after stepping on an orange tile makes piranhas attack you!"

"How do you remember that?" Ray asked, raising an eyebrow.

"It doesn't matter!" Frisk leaped onto a pink tile. "Let's go!" With nowhere else to go, Frisk slipped over a purple tile and onto a line of blue tiles. Before Frisk could continue, the colours faded. Mettaton floated down in front of them.

"Shoot," Chara muttered.

"OOOH, I'M SO SORRY! LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE OUT OF TIME!" Walls of fire inched closer to the group. "HERE COME THE FLAMES, DARLINGS!" Frisk threw their arms around Kat as the flames got even closer. "THEY'RE CLOSING IN! GETTING! CLOSER! OH MY!" The fire was so close Frisk could almost feel it piercing their skin. "ANY MINUTE NOW!" Frisk closed their eyes. However, the flames remained in place.

"He's not gonna do it," Teri muttered, folding her arms. Mettaton let out a clearly fake cough. A ringing sound filled the air and Frisk promptly answered their phone.

"Watch out" Alphys exclaimed. "I'll save you! I'm hacking into the firewall right now!" The flames disappeared moments later.

"OH NO!" Mettaton exclaimed, placing the back of his hand on his 'forehead.' "HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? FOILED AGAIN BY THE BRILLIANT DOCTOR ALPHYS!" There was a pause. "THA-"

"That's right!" Alphys cut him off. "Come on, Mettaton, give up already! You'll never be able to defeat us... Not as long as we work together! Your puzzle's over... Now go home and leave us alone!"

"PUZZLE? OVER? ALPHYS, DARLING, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT...? DID YOU FORGET WHAT THE GREEN TILES DO? THEY MAKE A SOUND, THEN YOU HAVE TO FIGHT A MONSTER." I was wondering why they weren't doing anything. "WELL, DARLING... THAT MONSTER... IS ME!" Mettaton landed in front of the group, making all their souls appear.

"ALPHYS!" Kat gasped, taking a step back.

"THIS IS IT DARLINGS! SAY GOODBYE!" A ringing sound erupted from Frisk's pocket. "IS THAT YOUR PHONE?! YOU'D BETTER ANSWER IT!"

Frisk answered the phone, putting it up against their ear. The others leaned toward it. "H-Hey! Th-this seems bad, but don't worry! Th-there's one last thing I installed on your phone...! You see that yellow button...?" Frisk glanced at the button. Go to this phone's Act menu and press it!" Frisk pressed the button to which a yellow glow began to emit from the antennae.

"OH! THAT YELLOW GLOW!" Mettaton exclaimed. Frisk glanced at their soul to see that it had turned yellow like Clover's soul.

"Now press X!" Alphys instructed. Frisk pointed the antennae at Mettaton and spammed the X button. Blasts fired from the antennae right at Mettaton. The robot squirmed around as the shots hit him.

"AWESOME!" Chara exclaimed.

"OOH! OOOOOOOH! YOU'VE DEFEATED ME!! HOW CAN THIS BE, YOU WERE STRONGER THAN I THOUGHT, ETC. WHATEVER. TOODLES." Mettaton rolled away, waving. The group's souls disappeared.

"That was quick," Teri mused, raising an eyebrow.

"But so awesome!" Clover gasped, gazing at the phone with wide eyes. "Our phone doubles as a shooter!"

"L-looks you beat him!" Alphys replied over the phone. "Y-you guys did a really good job out there."

"All thanks to you," Kat replied, taking the phone.

"What? Oh no, I mean… you guys were the ones doing everything cool. I just wrote some silly programs for your phone."

"They're really cool programs though!" Teri added, jumping towards the phone.

"Really? W-well thanks… It's nice to know someone thinks so…" Alphys's voice trailed off for a moment. "Umm h-hey, this might sound kind of strange but… c-can I tell you something?"

"Sure, what?" Poppy asked, stepping closer to the phone. Now everyone had crowded around the phone.

"B-before I met you guys, I d-didn't really… I didn't really like myself very much. For a long time, I f-felt like a total screw-up, l-like I couldn't do a-anything w-without… w-without ending up letting everyone down b-but! Guiding you has made me feel… a lot better about myself. So… thanks for letting me help you."

"No problem," Poppy replied, her voice shaking. "I'm… I'm glad we could help you, too."

"Uhh, thanks. Anyway, we're almost to the Core. It's just past MTT resort. Come on! Let's finish this!" Frisk walked down the gray tile path.

"What's MTT stands for?" Teri asked, walking at the phone's side.

"It's short for Mettaton," Alphys informed.

"Does it have hotel rooms?" Ray paused to yawn. "I'm exhausted." Frisk nodded, only just now feeling the weight of their steps and sag in their shoulders. How much time has passed since we slept in Snowdin?

"Won't Mettaton kill us if he finds us in his resort?" Clover asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, you'll be fine," Alphys insisted. "He barely goes to his resort. You can stay the night there." Alphys hung up.

"Great!" Kat exclaimed, hopping onto a flight of stairs. "Let's grab a bite to eat and stay the night at the resort." Is it even night? Frisk wondered.

"If we have the money for that kind of thing," Poppy replied with a shrug.

"I could always stay the night at Sans and Papyrus's," Ray suggested. "Uh… if they have space that is... with Undyne there now."

"Let's figure out how much it is before we start coming up with plans," Frisk insisted, dragging them up another flight of stairs. They skidded to a halt at the top. A bright building stood before them, with a red carpet leading to it. A smiling figure stood at the front.

"Sans!" Ray gasped, rushing toward him.

"Hey kid," he greeted with a wave. "I heard y'all were going to the Core. How about grabbing some dinner with me first?"

"Sure," Frisk answered with a nod.

"We were just about to get some anyway," Poppy added, stepping closer.

"Heh, so you're freeloadin' off o' me, huh?" Frisk's eyes widened.

"I… uh … we…" Poppy stuttered, clutching her notebook.

Sans chuckled. "Nah, it's cool. Come on, I know a shortcut." Sans lead the group down an alleyway. A wave of darkness washed over them and before they knew it, they appeared in front of a table. A candle stood in the middle with sets of silverware scattered about. Each of them took a seat. "Well, here we are. So your journey's almost over, huh?"

"Yeah… I guess…." Clover muttered, looking down at his fidgeting hands.

Poppy looked up from her notebook. "Wow, I hadn't thought about that…"

"You must really wanna go home," Sans mused. Poppy nodded, scribbling something in her notebook.

"Yeah," Teri sighed, twirling a fork around. "I really miss my dad…"

"Hey, I know the feeling buddo." Sans's voice was soft. "Though… Maybe sometimes it's better to take what's given to you. Down here you've already got food, drink, friends…" Frisk thought back to all their new friends: Papyrus, Sans, Alphys, Undyne, Napstablook, the Monster Kid… Perhaps it was best to stay here…

"I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to stay," Chara murmured. No. I have a goal, and I'm determined to reach it.

"But we don't have our families," Kat sighed, resting her elbow on the table.

"And we miss our lives on the surface," Clover added, twirling his toy gun around on the table.

"But is what you have to do… really worth it?" Sans asked, cocking his head.

"What we have to do?" Teri asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Ah… nevermind," Sans sighed, turning away. "I'm rootin' for ya, kids." A fish-like figure approached them, dropping some pieces of paper on the table as they passed. Frisk picked it up to see that it was a menu. Teri giggled to herself.

"Why is there a steak shaped like Mettaton's face on the menu?" She asked, covering her giggles with her hand.

"I guess a lot of people wanna lick his face," Poppy suggested, not even looking up from her journal. Teri's cheeks turned red.

"That's just gross," she grunted, rolling her eyes.

"Oh yeah, the face steak," Sans informed with a shrug. "It's the most expensive item on the menu. I heard that Mettaton actually presses his face into it to get the shape."

Poppys glanced up with wide eyes. "Woah… so it is like licking his face." Teri let out a grunt.

"Or… you know… eating it," Clover replied, rolling his eyes. Snickers spread through the group. Then there was silence.

"Hey," Sans spoke up suddenly. "Let me tell you a story."

Kat gazed at him, resting her head on her hands. "I like stories. Go ahead." Frisk and the others nodded.

"So I'm a sentry in Snowdin Forest, right? I sit out there and watch for humans. It's kind of boring." Sans winked. "Fortunately, deep in the forest… There's this HUGE locked door and it's perfect for practicing knock knock jokes. So one day, I'm knocking 'em out, like usual. I knock on the door and say 'knock knock' and suddenly, from the other side…" Frisk leaned forward in their seat. "I hear a woman's voice." Sans made his voice more high-pitched. "'Who is there?' So, naturally, I respond: dishes. 'Dishes who?'" Sans winked. "'Dishes a very bad joke.'" Poppy let out a grunt.

"Sans told a terrible pun," she murmured to herself as she scribbling in her notebook. "Like usual."

"Then she just howls with laughter," Sans continued. "Like it's the best joke she's heard in a hundred years. So I keep 'em coming, and she keeps laughing. She's the best audience I've ever had. Then, after a dozen of 'em, SHE knocks and says… 'knock knock!' I say 'who's there?' 'Old lady!' "Old lady who?" "Oh! I did not know you could yodel." Poppy let out a groan.

"Oh, that's definitely Mom," Chara sighed. "She loved bad jokes." Mom? As in… Toriel?!

"Wow," Sans continued. "Needless to say, this woman was extremely good. We kept telling each other jokes for hours. Eventually, I had to leave. Papyrus gets kind of cranky without his bedtime story."

Ray chuckled to himself. "Yup."

"But she told me to come by again, and so I did. Then I did again, and again. It's a thing now. Telling bad jokes through the door. It rules." Sans paused before continuing. "One day though, I noticed she wasn't laughing very much. I asked her what was up. Then she told me something strange. 'If any humans ever comes through this door… could you please promise me something? Watch over them, protect them, will you not?"

"Definitely Toriel," Frisk muttered.

"Now, I hate making promises and this woman, I don't even know her name but… Someone who sincerely likes bad jokes... " Sans winked. "Has an integrity you can't say 'no' to." Sans turned away, falling silent again. "Do you get what I'm saying?" he asked, turning back to the group. "That promise I made to her… You know what would have happened if she hadn't said anything?" Sans closed his eyes. "Buddy…" He opened his eyes, revealing that his pupils had disappeared. "You'd be dead where you stand." Frisk jerked back. Clover, Ray, and Poppy jumped back, raising their respective weapons. Teri and Kat let out shrieks. Sans's pupils reappeared as he reached toward the group. "Hey, lighten up, buckos. I'm just joking." Frisk let out a sigh, allowing their shoulders to relax. "Besides… Haven't I done a great job protecting you guys? I mean look at yourselves you haven't died a single time." A single time… does he know?

"Oh my god he knows!" Chara exclaimed.

"Hey, what's that look supposed to mean?" Sans asked, pointing at Frisk. "Am I wrong…?"

"Well, yeah," Ray replied with a shrug. "You can only die once and last I checked, we're all still alive."

"Well, that's all I had to say," Sans informed with a wink. "Take care of yourselves, kiddos 'cause someone really cares about ya."

"Ahem." Someone beside them cleared their throat. Frisk looked up to see the fish creature standing in front of the table.

"Are you ready to order?" they asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, right… dinner." Sans shrugged. "Sorry for distracting ya. I think we need more time." The fish creature nodded before slinking off.

Poppy's POV

"Hey, thanks for dinner Sans!" Ray called, waving at him. "We really appreciate it!"

"Any time," Sans replied, turning and exiting the resort.

"So where do we rent a room?" Clover asked, looking around. Poppy glanced ahead to a see a blue monster, whose head was shaped like a hand doing the "L" shape, standing behind a desk.

"I don't know," Poppy admitted, pointing at the monster. "Let's ask them." The group followed her to the desk. "Hi, how much is it to rent a room?"

"It's two hundred gold a room," the monster informed. Poppy clenched her teeth, her eyes widening. TWO HUNDRED?! "Interested?"

"Can we get one room for the six of us?" Kat asked, staring bright-eyed at the receptionist.

"Yeah. The six of you should be able to fit," the monster informed. "Given you have the money."

"I have a hundred ninety eight gold…" Frisk informed, digging through their pockets. Poppy pulled two pieces of gold out of her pocket.

"I can chip in," she insisted, slapping the gold onto the counter.

"We can all chip in," Kat replied, pushing what looked to be about thirty pieces of gold onto the counter. "If all of us chip in thirty three more gold we can be able to afford it."

How'd you do the math that quickly? Poppy counted out three pieces of gold before sliding them onto the counter. The others did the same.

"One hundred ninety nine. Two hundred! Fabulous! We'll escort you to your room." Another figure, concealed by a hood, lead them through the main room, past a fountain shaped like Mettaton… Why do I question these things anymore? The figure lead them down a hallway before stopping in front of a door.

"Here's your room key," they informed, holding it out a tiny golden key. Frisk took the key.

"Thank you," Kat replied, with a hop. Frisk turned the key and pushed the door open. Poppy's jaw dropped. There was only one bed but it stretched across most of the room, with a nightstand on each side.

"Yeah… this will work." Clover broke the awed silence. Teri cheered, lunging onto the bed. Ray jumped to her side, hopping on the bed like a rabbit on a sugar-high. The others joined in the jumping.

"Hey, could you maybe not jump on the bed?" Poppy asked, sitting down against the wall.

"Why not?" Ray whined, crossing his arms.

"This is a fancy resort. You could get us kicked out," Poppy informed, writing down some notes in her notebook.

"Okay, we won't jump on the bed," Teri sighed, her shoulders slouched. Frisk grinned. They crawled to the top of the bed. Throwing the covers over themself, they crawled back toward the others.

"Frisk, what are you doing?" Kat asked, covering her bright smile with her hand.

The lump that was Frisk straightened up.

"No idea," Frisk replied, shurgging. The lump became flatter and Frisk crawled around the bed. Ray lunged toward a pillow.

"Pillow fight!" He called, slamming it against Clover's head. He let out a grunt. Lunging for another pillow, he held it up over his head.

"Oh it is on!" he exclaimed, slamming it into Ray's head. Teri joined the fight too. The three of them slapped each other with their pillows, giggling the whole way. Kat and Frisk crawled around the covers. Occasionally, the pillow fighters would shriek as one of them approached.

"Stop pinching!" Ray exclaimed, slapping one of the lumps with his pillows. Frisk and Kat giggled beneath the covers. Poppy smiled. Letting out a yawn, she glanced back at her journal.

"Come on, Poppy, join us," Clover insisted, pushing Ray aside with one hand.

"No thanks," Poppy yawned, scribbling in her notebook.

...I'm not sure how my friends can have so much energy after the day we had. I mean, we began the day by having bones thrown at us by a skeleton and ended the day nearly being burned to death by a wall of flames. And in-between that time we were assaulted by a fish lady with magic spears (Clover even told me that they dealt with her head-on after I went with Napstablook), accidentally set Undyne's house on fire while cooking, were constantly attacked by a sadistic robot on live TV, and nearly turned into donuts by a creepy spider lady and her army of smaller spiders. Not to mention all the monsters and puzzles we dealt with in-between. I'm having a hard time believing this was all one day. At least it'll probably make a good book someday...

By the time Poppy had finished writing, all of her friends had passed out on the bed. Teri and Ray sprawled out in the middle of the bed. Clover slept on his stomach, his head rested on his arms while Frisk and Kat were curled up under the covers. Poppy pulled the blanket over herself with a yawn. She closed her eyes. However, she tossed and turned, unable to get comfortable. Not helping were the constant cries nearby, sounding almost cat-like. They got louder and louder…

"NO! SPIDERS!" Ray's voice cried. Letting out a groan, Poppy pushed herself into a sitting position. Ray was laying on his side. He had his legs pulled into his chest.

"What?" Poppy grunted, resting her hand on her forehead. "Spiders? There are no spiders in here?"

"They're everywhere," Ray whimpered, shaking in place. "Their eyes are always watching me…"

"Huh? Oh!" Poppy's eyes widened. "Wait, are you talking about Muffet?" Ray only responded with a whimper. "Jeez, I didn't realize you were this scared of spiders."

Ray froze. "Scared?" He pushed himself into a sitting position. "I... I'm not scared of anything!" Poppy raised an eyebrow. "I just… wanna make sure they don't come here in the middle of the night and kill us in our sleep."

"They won't," Poppy replied, pausing to let out a yawn. "They let us go, remember? Why would they come for us now? Mettaton's more likely to kill us in our sleep."

"I… I know," Ray sighed, glancing at the covers. "It's just… I'm supposed to be brave… nothing else has scared me so far."

"Bravery isn't fearlessness," Poppy explained, resting her head on her hands. "It's knowing how to handle your fears. If you're not afraid of something that's trying to kill you, then you're a fool."

"I guess," Ray grunted, laying back down. "Goodnight Poppy."

"G-night Ray," Poppy yawned back, laying down. Eventually, she was able to fall asleep.
