Nightmare Fuel

Frisk's POV

"Frisk! Frisk, get up!" Frisk's eyes popped. Pushing themself to their feet, they looked around. Darkness seemed to have swallowed them. No matter what direction they looked, they couldn't see a thing.

"Where am I?" Frisk grunted, resting their hand on their forehead.

"I don't know," Chara admitted. "I just remember Flowey…" Frisk continued forward through the darkness, squinting to see a save point ahead. Should I?

"Eh, go for it," Chara replied, probably shrugging if they could. Frisk reached out to the save point. Before they could touch it, the save point cracked into pieces and fell to the ground. Gasps filled the room. Cracks formed in the wall before them as well. They got bigger and bigger before the pieces snapped off, revealing a giant smiling face. Frisk jumped back, eyes wide.

"Howdy! It's me, Flowey! Flowey the flower." Flowey shook as he spoke, though definitely not from fear. "I owe you a huge thanks. You really did a number on that old fool. Without you, I NEVER would have been able to get past him." Frisk flinched as Flowey's face was replaced with Asgore's. "But now, with YOUR help." Then it became a skull. "He's DEAD! And I've got your pathetic friends' souls!"

Frisk's eyes widened. "NO!" Their eyes filled with tears as Flowey cackled. Of course! Those were their souls! How could I have been so stupid?!

"Boy! I've been empty for so long…" Frisk glared up at Flowey, fists clenched. You demon. "It feels GREAT to have a soul inside me again. Mmm, I can feel them wriggling... Aww, you're feeling left out, aren't you?" You will pay for what you've done you disgusting creature! Tears poured out. "Well that's just perfect. After all, I only have six souls. I still need one more… Before I become GOD! And then with my newfound powers, monsters, humans, everyone! I'll show them all the REAL meaning of this world." Flowey stopped to cackle again.

"Who does this sicko think he is?!" Chara snapped.

"Oh, and forget about escaping to your old save file," Flowey continued. "It's gone FOREVER. But don't worry. Your old friend Flowey… has worked out a replacement for you! I'll save over your own death. So you can watch me tear you to bloody pieces… over, and over, and over!" Frisk took a step forward, their eyes narrowed at Flowey. "What? Do you really think you can stop ME?" Flowey giggled. "You really are an idiot." Frisk's soul appeared before them. Six more souls appeared, Ray's, Clover's, Kat's, Teri's, Poppy's and... Frisk's eyes widened. He even killed Ace?! WHY?! Red light flooded the room. A huge figure inched closer to Frisk. A much brighter light filled the room, revealing the figure in all of its horrifying glory. Words to describe this horror didn't exist. The figure had four eyes, with a TV screen with Flowey's face in it, giant vines protruding from his sides, knives for teeth, and huge arms with claws on the ends that blocked Frisk's ways out. Flowey cackled through both mouths before all hell broke loose. Flames swiped at Frisk's sides. They leaped back and forth, covering their hair with their arm. Boomerangs shot from Flowey's eyes. Barely having time to react, Frisk threw their body in every direction, sharp objects sinking into their skin at every angle. Blood poured from their wounds, coating their skin. Bullets came next. They formed in circles, shooting into a ball before going in every direction.

"ATTACK HIM!" Chara snapped. Grabbing their stick, Frisk threw themself at Flowey, slamming the stick against their mouth. Flowey let out a grunt. Before Frisk could move, a beam shot from Flowey's mouth. Frisk's vision blacked out instantly. They flopped to the ground with a gasp, unable to even struggle.

"This is all just a bad dream," Asgore's voice murmured.

"And you're NEVER waking up!" Flowey's cackle split the air before he giggled. "Did you really think I was gonna be satisfied… killing you only ONE time?" Frisk's eyes popped open. Flowey stood before them, immediately firing more boomerangs. Frisk weaved through them, grunting and lunged out of the way as Flowey fired a beam from his mouth. Vines shot down at them, their thorns poking Frisk even as they jumped aside. Frisk slammed the stick against Flowey's head. Moments later, the screen turned red, flashing the word 'warning' over it along with a light blue heart. Flowey disappeared, a flurry of knives taking his place. Frisk weaved through the giant twirling knives, their gaze fixed on the light blue heart. They glanced at one of the knives, their eyes wide.

"Ace!" Frisk called, reaching toward the screen with watery eyes. "I know you're in there! Please, help me!"

"I don't think that's gonna work…" Chara admitted. The knives stopped twirling to tremble in place. Then they disappeared completely, replaced by green bandages that floated toward Frisk. Their cuts and bruises faded and they stood taller. "Nevermind," Chara grunted. The TV buzzed, and Flowey reappeared in front of Frisk. Bombs appeared above them. Frisk lunged out of the way, gasping as their skin scorched. When the bombs disappeared, venus flytraps sprouted from Flowey's claws, luring flies into them. Frisk weaved through them, not taking a single hit. Finger guns were next. Frisk leaped past through the shots, smacking Flowey's head with the stick. Green faces bounced around the battlefield. Then another rain of missiles came before the TV flashed with a warning again, this time with an orange heart depicted. Flowey disappeared, replaced by giant floating hands. The tough gloves! The hands went back and forth, forming circles that Frisk made their way into.

"Ray!" Frisk called, weaving around a finger. "Help me! Fight against Flowey's control, I know you can!" The hands gave a thumbs up as they turned green, allowing to Frisk run through them and heal. The TV buzzed and Flowey reappeared.

"Okay, I think I'm starting to get this," Chara muttered. Vines shot down toward Frisk. They jumped aside, only for something for something else to shoot through them. Frisk let out a cry. "Spoke too soon." Frisk leaped away from the vines, only for them to appear beneath more vines.

"What is going on?!" Frisk exclaimed, narrowly jumping away from some vines.

"He's saving and reloading," Chara informed. Oh, come on! Boomerangs tore Frisk's skin apart. Blood stained the ground beneath them as they struggled to dodge. Finally, two vines skewered Frisk. They let out one final cry before falling limp in the air. The world went dark.

"This is all just a bad dream," Asgore's voice murmured, just like before.

"And you're NEVER waking up!" Flowey's voice cackled yet again. "Pathetic… now you're REALLY gonna die." Frisk's eyes snapped open. The vine attack repeated, to which Frisk leaped and swung wildly until a blue heart flashed on the TV screen. Flowey disappeared, to which giant ballet shoes replaced him. Frisk forced themself to their feet. They limped through the ballet shoes, stopping as they slammed into the ground. They kept their head low beneath the stars.

"Teri!" Frisk cried, gripping their bleeding stomach. "You know this isn't right! Stop this and help me!" The ballet shoes rose up, revealing that the stars had turned into green music notes. Frisk sprinted through them, wounds instantly fading. Flowey reappeared. Boomerangs zipped toward Frisk. Frisk slipped past them, slamming their stick into Flowey's head. Attack after attack, Frisk was mostly successful in their dodging, having seen all of them before. They slipped past a swarm of flies when the TV buzzed. It was flashing yet another warning, with a purple soul picture on the screen. Poppy. A wall of notebooks surrounded Frisk. From their pages, words flew through the air, scraping Frisk's skin. Frisk read them as they passed. Doom, trapped, murderer, death, despair, nightmare, corrupt, horror, murder, pain, fight, destroy.

"Poppy!" Frisk called, weaving through the words. "This isn't you! You're not a murderer! Prove that now and help me!" The words quivered. Green words drifted through the air. As Frisk reached out to heal, they read these words with a smile. Hope, dream, success, freedom, calm, love, mercy, friendship. Flowey reappeared moments later. He fired the usual attacks, which Frisk dodged.

"How are you already used to this?" Chara asked. Frisk shrugged, sidestepping a beam. The TV flashed with a warning, a green soul in the middle. Kat... Three burnt pans appeared above Frisk. They flipped up and down, flinging flames down toward them. Frisk dodged left and right. The flames passed by them, barely grazing their shirt.

"Kat!" Frisk cried, stomping out a flame. "I can't do this alone! I need your help!" Their eyes watered. "Please…" The flames disappeared. Green eggs replaced them, raining down from the sky. Frisk reached toward them. Standing stronger, Frisk lunged at Flowey as he reappeared. They got one swing in before they had to dodge a flurry of flies, boomerangs, missiles, flames, the entire plethora. Frisk dodged a swarm of boomerangs before a warning flashed on the TV screen. The yellow soul this time. Clover. A huge gun appeared. Red light flashed beneath Frisk, making them jump. A bullet fired at that spot. Frisk stood in place, leaping away from the bullets at the last second.

"Clover!" Frisk called, jumping a bullet. "You don't want to help Flowey! None of you do! Help me!" The gun shook before firing four leaf clovers. Frisk struggled to grab them, as the gun fired them in random directions. The TV buzzed. However, Flowey did not reappear. Frisk glanced up to see all six souls rotating together in a circle. They floated toward Frisk. Circling them, their friends' souls fired various green objects at them. Frisk's wounds disappeared. The souls floated away, as Flowey reappeared.

"Flowey's defense dropped to zero!" Chara exclaimed. Frisk's jaw dropped. Pushing their way through a line of boomerangs, Frisk swung repeatedly at Flowey's face. Frisk's friends continued to rain green items down on them. They stood their ground, accepting whatever harm or healing came to them as they whacked Flowey with all of their might. The monster's grunts turned into shrieks. Finally, Flowey let out a final shriek, his body falling to the ground.

"No… NO!" Flowey exclaimed, squirming around. "This CAN'T be happening! You… you.." Flowey floated above the ground again, his normal face appearing smug on the TV screen.

"Oh, come on!" Frisk snapped, slamming their stick into the ground.

"Die already you stupid flower!" Chara added.

"You IDIOT." A beam fired from Flowey's mouth, knocking Frisk to the ground. Their vision blacked out. Their eyes snapped open, only for vines to spear through their stomach. Their vision kept snapping out and snapping on, over and over like a light switch as Frisk choked out their cries. Frisk fell to the ground on their hands. Blood dripped into their eyes, stabbing them like knives. The sharp tang of blood stung their tongue as well. Frisk looked up at Flowey. Their vision was now tinted red though they could see bullets surrounding them.

"Frisk…"

Flowey giggled. "Did you REALLY think… You could defeat ME?! I am the God of this world. And YOU?! You're hopeless! Hopeless and alone…" Frisk's eyes narrowed. "Golly, that's right!" Flowey's face morphed into one of a child. "Your worthless friends can't save you now, human or monster! Call for help. I dare you. Cry into the darkness! 'Mommy! Daddy! Somebody help!' See what good it does you!"

"No…" Chara's voice was breathless. "It-it can't be…"

Frisk ignored their words. "Kat! Teri! Ace! Poppy! Ray! Clover! I know you want to fight him! I know I've asked a lot but please, help me now!" There was a pause.

"But nobody came," Flowey replied, winking. "Boy! What a shame! Nobody else… Is gonna get to see you die!" The bullets closed in around Frisk. They covered their head, preparing for the bullets to pierce their skin. Instead, their body strengthened. Frisk looked around, but the bullets were nowhere in sight. They stood up, glaring at Flowey. "What? How'd you…? We'll I'll just…" Flowey's smile faded as sweat dripped down his face. "Wh… where are my powers?!" The souls appeared. "The souls...? What are they doing?" The souls rotated around Flowey, forcing him to squirm violently on the ground, as he was engulfed in bright light. "NO! NO! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO OBEY ME! STOP! STOP IT! STOOOOPPPP!!" A bright light consumed the room. Frisk slammed their eyes shut, blocking them with their arm. Frisk opened their eyes as the light faded. Flowey, now a normal flower again, has his head hung low and obscured by his petals.

"Will you…?" Chara stopped. They let out a sigh. Frisk took a step toward Flowey, their eyes narrowed. They tossed the stick aside. Flowey glanced at Frisk raising an eyebrow.

"What are you doing? Do you really think I've learned anything from this?" Flowey looked back at the ground. "Sparing me won't change anything. Killing me is the only way to end this." He does kind of deserve it… no! No one deserved to be killed! Flowey glared at Frisk. "If you let me live… I'll come back! I'll kill you. I'll kill everyone. I'll kill everyone you love!"

"You already did that," Frisk grunted, rolling their eyes.

Flowey straightened up, staring at Frisk with a bewildered face. "Then why? Why are you being so nice to me?" Frisk shrugged. Flowey turned away. "I can't understand… I just can't understand!" Flowey disappeared down the hall. Darkness drowned the room once again, knocking Frisk off their feet. They closed their eyes.

"Frisk!" Frisk's eyes popped open. "Can you stop falling unconscious like that?!" Frisk rested their hand on their forehead, which pounded like a drum. It was too dark to see anything past their own hand.

"Sorry," they grunted. "Can't really control that. Where are we?" Frisk rested a hand on the ground, eyes widening as their hand brushed against grass. They glanced up at the sky. Faint stars shined in the distance, though the moon was nowhere to be seen.

"We're on the surface…" Frisk muttered, their eyes wide.

"How though…?" Chara asked.

"I don't know," Frisk admitted, pulling their phone out of their pocket. They had one missed call and a voicemail. They clicked on the voicemail, pressing the phone against their ear to hear it.

"Heya," Sans' voice answered. "Is anyone there...? Well, I'll just leave a message… So, it's been a been a while." A while? "The queen returned, and is now ruling over the Underground."

"Wait, how much time has passed?" Chara asked. Frisk shrugged.

"She's enstated a new policy... All the humans who fall here will be treated not as enemies… but as friends. It's probably for the best… Uh… I hate to tell ya this over a voicemail but… something happened to your human friends. We found their bodies scattered across the Underground, and the queen was very distraught over a sixth human's death when she returned. Their souls were nowhere near their bodies so some assumed someone absorbed them… but we have no proof of that. Again, sorry to let you know this way." Frisk wiped away their tears. "Anyway, even as people are heartbroken over the king… and things are looking grim for our freedom… The queen's trying her best not to let us give up hope. So, uh, hey… if we're not giving up down here, don't give up wherever you are, okay?" Frisk nodded. "Who knows how long it will take… but we will get out of here."

"SANS! WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?!" a voice demanded, getting louder and louder. Frisk smiled as they recognized Papyrus's voice.

"Oh, nobody," Sans answered.

WHAT, NOBODY?! CAN I TALK TO THEM, TOO?!" Papyrus asked.

"Here, knock yourself out," Sans replied, handing Papyrus the phone.

"WAIT A SECOND… I RECOGNIZE THIS NUMBER! ATTENTION, HUMAN! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM NOW CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD! IT'S EVERYTHING I'VE EVER DREAMED OF… EXCEPT, INSTEAD OF FIGHTING, WE JUST WATER FLOWERS. SO THAT'S EVER SO SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AND WE'RE HELPING DOCTOR ALPHYS WITH HER RESEARCH. SHE'S GONNA FIND A WAY TO GET US OUT OF HERE. UNDYNE IS HELPING HER TOO! THOUGH TO BE HONEST… HER METHOD OF HELPING SEEMS KIND OF… EXPLOSION INDUCING." Frisk giggled. Yeah, that sounds like Undyne. "BUT I THINK ALPHYS LIKES HAVING HER AROUND. UH OH-"

"Hey!? What are you up to, punk?!" a voice demanded, approaching the phone. "NNNGAH!"

"PLEASE DON'T NOOGIE THE PHONE," Papyrus protested, the receiver buzzing.

"Hey!" Undyne exclaimed. "Who's in charge here?!"

"ME."

"Oh… yeah, thats' right! I quit my job as leader of the Royal Guard," Undyne informed. "Actually, since we won't be fighting anymore, the Royal Guard totally disbanded. There's, uh, only one member now."

"BUT HE'S EXTREMELY GOOD."

"Yeah, he is! C'mere!"

"PLEASE, DON'T NOOGIE THE SKELETON!" Papyrus protested, a loud clank erupting through the receiver. Frisk assumed he dropped the phone.

"Anyways." Undyne picked up the phone. "Now I'm working as Alphys's lab assistant… We're gonna find a way out of this dump once and for all! Oh, yeah, and I'm a gym teacher at the queen's new school. Did you know I can bench-press seven children?! Awesome, right? Oh… children… uh, sorry about your friends… and Asgore… You were just doing what you had to, it's not your fault…" Frisk bit back a fresh wave of tears. "Ah, those deaths have all shook even now." Undyne leaned away from the phone. "Come on, Undyne! Snap out of it!" She leaned back toward the phone. "Uh, I guess I'll tell you how Alphys is doing. Well, she's the same as ever, maybe a little more reclusive than normal, it seems like something's really bothering her… but she can get through it! I'm there supporting her! That's what friends are for, right?" Undyne paused. "Hey, wherever you are… I hope it's better than here. It took a lot of sacrifice for you to get there… So, wherever you are, you have to try to be happy, okay?! For our sakes! We'll feel better knowing our trouble was worth it." Was my trouble worth it? Frisk wondered. If I had just stayed put… maybe my friends would still be alive… and maybe we could've broke the barrier. "We're all with you," Undyne continued. "Everyone is! Even the queen!" She paused. "Hey wait a second! TORIEL! TORIEL! DO YOU WANNA…?" There was a pause. "Heh, she says she's busy."

"BUT IF SHE KNEW WHO WE WERE TALKING TO.." Papyrus stopped.

"We wouldn't get the phone back for at least a few hours," Sans cut in, probably winking.

"WE HAVE THE MERCY TO SPARE YOU FROM HER!" Papyrus exclaimed.

"But call back anytime, okay?" Undyne replied. "She'd love to talk!"

"Oh, whoops." Sans took the phone back, his voice echoing much louder. "This thing's almost outta batteries. So, hate to cut this short, but… Be seeing you, okay, buddy?"

"BYE BYE FOR NOW!"

"See ya, punk!" With a click, the voicemail ended. Frisk let out a sigh. They put the phone back in their pocket, standing up.

"So, what now?" Chara asked. "Surely you have people to return to?" Frisk let out a sigh. How am I going to tell Kat's parents?… How am I going to tell any of their parents? And there's no hope of helping my monster friends this way. No one's gonna listen to some little kid. Frisk sat back down. A figure popped out of the earth, its eyes still filled with confusion.

"You…!" Chara gasped.

"Why…?" Flowey asked, staring at Frisk. "Why did you let me go after what I did? Don't you realize that being nice... just makes you get hurt? Look at yourself. You made all these great friends… but now, you'll probably never see them again. Not to mention the old friends you've lost." Frisk clenched their jaw. "Hurts, doesn't it? If you had just gone through without caring about anyone… you wouldn't have to feel bad right now. So I don't get it. If you really did everything the 'right' way, why did things end up like this?"

"Because you killed… Asgore, and six innocent children!" Chara exclaimed.

"Why…?" Flowey continued. "Is life really that unfair?" Flowey glanced to the side before meeting Frisk's gaze again. "Say. What if I told you I knew some way to get you a better ending?" Frisk's eyes widened.

"How?"

"Humans have this power called 'determination' that allows their souls to persist after death," Flowey explained. "If you have a lot of determination, like yourself, you can go back and change fate."

"You mean… go back in time?" Flowey nodded. Frisk stood up, brushing the grass off their shirt. Yes, that's the only way to salvage this. Frisk walked away from Flowey.

"Do you even know how to do that?" Chara asked.

"I've been doing it this whole time…" Frisk informed, stopping in front of a cliff.. "All I have to do is go back to the last save point."

"But that would mean… dying…" Frisk nodded.

"Well… see you soon," Flowey called, disappearing into the ground. Frisk gulped. They took a step off the cliff, allowing themself to fall.
