Chapter 21 (First Mission)

I was in my tent with the others, and we just sat in silence. 45% of the population was gone, communication around the world was cut off for the first hours, but after reconnecting, news was just horrible everywhere. Portals went on a rampage and monsters constantly spewed out killing thousands of people. Some areas after a couple hours got under control by their respective strong beings.

After some time and consideration, what was left of the government they named those who wanted to fight the monsters and explore the portals, were called Hunters. They also managed to send the military for support and supplies to keep everyone safe against monsters.

Apparently, the sector we were in, Zero, had the most successful portal closes throughout the world in a short time. Four portal closings, two of them coming from my group. The information I received from Lt. General Hanks was that most of the portals were just in the F category and some in the Ds around the world. However, he said he heard about a portal that was a C- rank, with writings in a weird language all over the portal.

We were able to find out when the portals go on a rampage, at first you will hear a loud beep every hour, then two beeps every 30 minutes, then three beeps every 10 minutes, then finally constant beeping for 5 minutes. All portals are random for timing, but it seems the C- Rank portal is different, with not hearing a single beep within days.

They promoted Lt. Hernandez to that of Major and offered the four of us positions in the military with ranks of Sergeant. I was the only one of the four to decline the offer, for I had a different plan in mind. However, I did say I would help with dungeon clearing for a while, I had to search for my family first though.

"Are you sure John? You should join with us, later we can have higher ranks and be well known throughout the world." Jake

"I know what you are going at, but I just don't want something to tie me down, I want to look for my family and go at my own pace." John

"Fine" Jake made an irritable face and turned away.

We took an hour rest and prepared for a portal clear that was a couple blocks down, it was at the third stage of the rampage, and its rank was F Category. The four of us, including another group that took down a portal on their own hopped in the back of the truck. The total of people entering the portal was eight.

At first it was quite, but I broke the ice, and told them our names, and asked for theirs. That is when the biggest guy in the group responded.

"My name is Axel, their names are; Jax, Kim, and Loki. I am the leader, and I heard from Major Hernandez, that you are the leader for you group. I also heard about yall taking down two portals, usually I would pick a fight on who is stronger for the role of leader, but out of statistics, I will let you take point. Only for this hunt, got it!" Axel

"Sure, man, whatever you say."

I was not in the mood, to talk back, or fight about who is stronger. Personally I did not care, but when someone starts being cocky, and is a complete ass about strength and shit. Well, I want to kick his ass, but we are on our way to a portal, we must keep our calm. We finally arrived at the scene, there was a perimeter of a barbed fence around, with around five soldiers keeping a lookout. One of the soldiers came up and saluted towards the newly dress sergeants of the military that were around me.

"Sergeants, I am Corporal James, I oversee this portal. We are glad you guys are here to take care of it, my soldiers and I were getting worried and scared" Cpl. James

"Scared?" John

"….yes, we kept hearing strange noises coming from the portal, and I swear I saw one peek his head out and in of the portal. Something I have never seen before." Cpl. James

With all the information given, we are going to enter another goblin portal. I take another look at my status screen, and something catches my eye, I had another class. And I could not understand the text.
