Day 10.

Ten Reasons Not To Die

Day 10 You

Evan wasn't at school the next morning.

I wasn't going to lie and say that I wasn't disappointed that he wasn't here. I was almost looking forward to see him today, and see what he had planned for me. Everything he has done for me so far had made me so much happier. I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if he never found me standing on the edge of that cliff a week ago.

All I know is that I would've missed out on throwing eggs at him in his uncle's bakery, getting accepted into Brown University with a full scholarship, and most importantly, just being with Evan.

A shiver went down my spine, as I gulped nervously.

Did I just admit that I liked Evan?

No, I kept telling myself. I couldn't like Evan. He was only trying to save my life because he felt bad for me. I didn't like him, and I never would. But I couldn't help but contradict myself, because during the entire day at school, I couldn't help but wish that he was here today.

After school, I mustered up the courage to walk up to one of the guys that I always saw Evan around, Mason. I always saw them chuckling with each other, and I've even seen them outside of school just hanging out. I assumed that Mason was one of Evan's closest friends. He must've known where Evan was today.

Mason was leaning against his red Porsche Carrera, laughing loudly at something one of the guys he was around had said. I let out a deep breath of air, approaching Mason. He didn't notice me until I stood clear in front of him.

He tilted his head up, staring at me with his brown eyes confused. "Can I help you?" he asked. His tone wasn't harsh or cold, which I had expected it to be. His voice was almost welcoming, yet there was curiosity lingering from the tip of his tongue.

I stared uncomfortably at the three other guys that all had their eyes on me. Mason must've noticed that I didn't want them around, so with one nod, they all walked away from Mason and I.

Mason turned back to me, raising an eyebrow, as if he were trying to signal for me to say something. I licked my lips, sighing. "Do you know where Evan is today?"

Mason stared at me blankly, before his brown eyes began to roam over my face. He stared at me with such intense eyes, if he was trying to read what I was thinking. "W ho are you?"

I gulped. That was certame not the answer I was hoping to get. I was expecting him to just tell me where Evan was. I wasn't expecting for him to ask me who I was, and why I wanted to see Evan. "Remy. I'm just a friend of Evan's."

Mason's eyes suddenly widened, as if he recognized who I was. "You're Remy? Remy Montgomery?"

I nodded slowly. "That's me."

Mason's lips parted, as he let out a cough, clearing his throat. Suddenly, his lips started to move, but no voice came out from him. I stared at his lips intently, trying to read what he was mumbling about. I made out the words as numbers. His lips stopped moving when he counted to ten.

"Day ten." He whispered to himself, before his eyes locked back into mine. "Today is day ten."

Evan told Mason about our deal? I wasn't surprised, though. They were best friends. I just assumed that the deal was only between the two of us, since Evan never mentioned that he told other people. I suddenly frowned. Who else did he tell?

"Listen, can you just tell me where Evan is?" I asked impatiently.

Mason suddenly smacked the palm of hand to his forehead, shaking his head. "Oh my God, Evan is such a fucking coward."

"What do you mean?" I frowned.

Mason snorted. "He's obviously chickening out since it's the last day. Come on, get in the car. I'll bring you to his house."

I was hesitant to get in this stranger's car, but I did anyways. I was desperate to see Evan, and I was willing to go inside a stranger's car to do so.

There was no doubt that there was an uncomfortable silence lingering in the air between Mason and I, but I was trying my best to ignore it. My mind was completely focused on Evan. I let out a deep breath of air, trying to figure out what to say to him once I saw him.

"We're here." Mason announced, pulling up in front of a beige house with white shutters. I noticed that the lawn was well maintained, and there was a stone pathway that led up to the front steps of his house.

I hit my lower lip, giving Mason a small smile. "Thanks." I told him, as I began to get out of his car.

Before I could close the door, Mason stopped me. "Wait, Remy." He paused, as I stared into his brown eyes. "Don't kill yourself, okay?"

I clenched my jaw, feeling myself go numb. "What?"

Mason sucked in a deep breath of air, shaking his head. "Just don't do anything you'll regret."

I watched as Mason's red Porsche disappeared down the street, before making a sharp turn to the right. I sighed, staring up at the house that I stood in front of. I slowly made my way towards the French doors, before ringing the doorbell.

A waited a few moments before the doors opened, revealing a woman that had the same identical emerald green eyes as Evan. She had soft dark hair that reached just past her shoulders, and pale, ivory skin.

"Is Evan here?" I asked, peering over her shoulder. I fast noticed that polished marble floors, then the grand spiral staircase.

The woman gave me a gentle smile, letting me inside her house. I began to take off my shoes that looked muddy and dirty compared to her polished white floors. She stopped me, shaking her head with a light laugh. "Oh, that's not necessary, honey."

My cheeks turned bright red, as I nodded. "I'm Evan's mother, but you can call me Aspen." She smiled gently.

"I'm Remy." I said shyly.

"Are you one of Evan's friends?" she asked.

I nodded. "We go to the same school together."

She suddenly frowned, as she studied me closely. "You're a senior, am I correct?" I nodded. "Can I ask what college you got accepted to, honey?"

"Brown University." I said cautiously, as she lifted an eyebrow. I frowned, did I say something wrong? I gulped, not wanting to make a bad impression.

"On a full scholarship?" Aspen whispered quietly.

I nodded slowly, as her eyes widened. I licked my lips, as I stared at my feet, not wanting to meet her intense green eyes. "Is Evan here?"

She ignored my question, as she clamped a hand over her mouth. "You're the girl that Evan gave up his scholarship for?"

My ears immediately perked up, as I stared at Evan's mother with wide eyes. What did she just say?

"Mom, Who rang the bell?" a familiar voice suddenly echoed throughout the room, coming from up the stairs.

My eyes snapped upwards, as Evan's eyes locked into mine. He stared at me with surprise, before his eyes turned into a dark shade of guilt. "Uh, Remy." He cleared his throat. "I didn't know you were here."

I clenched my fists, suddenly feeling angry. He was hiding from me throughout the entire day?

"What do you mean by that, Evan?" I snapped. "Are you surprised that I'm not dead?"

Evan's eyes widened, as he shook his head. He stared between me and his mother nervously. He sighed, as he hit his lower lip. "Come upstairs." He said, as he disappeared from the railings.

I unclenched my lists, as I turned to his mother, who looked confused at what I just said. I shrugged her off, as I began to go up the grand spiral staircase, feeling like I'm just making Evan's house dirty by stepping in it with my sneakers that I've had for two years now.

I found Evan's room by stepping into the one that had its door slightly opened. I couldn't help but get distracted on the way by all of the expensive looking decorations that tilled the house.

Evan never told me that he was loaded.

"Remy." he breathed When I came into his room, closing the door behind me. My eyes wandered around his room, noticing how everything looked untouched and new. "I can explain-"

"Why did you give me your scholarship to Brown?" I asked immediately, crossing my arms as I darted my eyes at Evan.

"Because I know you need it." He simply said.

I clenched my fists, wanting to rip my hair out. "I don't need you to give me your scholarship because you have enough money to pay for college! I don't need you to feel bad for me."

Evan's face crumpled, as he pursed his lips. "I do not pity you, Remy."

"That's ridiculous, Evan." I spat. "This whole time, you only wanted to save me because you felt bad for me."

Evan clenched his jaw, eyes burning into mine. "I can't believe you would even think of me like that."

Tears were welling up in my eyes now. I couldn't control all of those emotions that I had bottled up inside me since my parents died. Everything was just getting too heavy, and everything just decided to explode right now.

"Then why did you leave me today?" I asked, voice so low and weak. "On the last day, why would you just pretend like you never made that deal with me? Did you just want to wait and hear my name in the radio tomorrow, the reporter saying that I committed suicide by jumping off a cliff?"

My words seemed to pierce through Evan like a bullet, because he looked like I had just shot him.

"I didn't come to see you today," he paused, letting out a deep breath of air, "because I couldn't think of a reason good enough to try to save you. Do you know how I would feel if I found out that I wasn't good enough to save you? I spent the entire night last night, trying to come up with reasons that would make you stay."

I noticed then that his eyes were tired and bloodshot, terrible bags drooping under his eyes. Immediately, I felt guilty, but that didn't stop the tears that were streaming down my cheeks.

Evan sighed, as he stepped in front of my. His fingers left burns on my cheeks, as he wiped away tear after tear. "Don't cry, Remy." He breathed, hot breath tickling my cheeks. "Baby, please don't cry."

Baby.

The word seemed to fill my heart with warmth, as I stared up at Evan's eyes with my glossy and blurry vision.

Evan's eyes suddenly lowered to my lips, as he hit down on his eagerly. Immediately, I felt the two of us leaning in, but before our lips brushed, Evan stopped me. I stared up at him with eyes filled with pain. Did he not want to kiss me?

"Remy, I want to do this right." He whispered.

I closed my eyes, pressing my forehead against his. "What do you mean?"

"I love you." He breathed. I love you.

Those three words meant so much to me. The last time someone told me they loved me was when I saw my mother in the hospital, all bandaged up. Dad had died from the impact of the car crash, but mom was given another forty-eight hours before she had to go, too. I was kneeling beside her bed, when she stroked my cheek.

"I love you, Remy." She whispered, voice so weak. Her face was pale, as she looked as if all the energy she had inside her had been strained. "You're going to be a beautiful smart woman one day."

I hit my lower lip, as I pressed my lips against Evan's. His lips molded into mine, as he kissed me back. Everything seemed to fit in place, as his arms snaked around my waist, pulling me in closer to his body. I wrapped my arms around his neck, as he continued to kiss me. His hands were everywhere, from the small of my back, or tangled into my thick hair.

When we finally pulled away, Evan's eyes were shining and his lips were rosy red from kissing so much. But, I could say the same for me, as well. I could feel myself smiling like an idiot, as Evan let out a low laugh.

"Remy, I don't exactly have a reason for day ten," he paused, tucking a strand of hair behind my ears, "but will you stay?"

I nodded, without hesitation. "Yes."

Evan laughed, as be pulled me in for another kiss. His kisses were so intoxicating; I would never get tired of them. If I could kiss him forever, I know I would.

"My God, I love you." He whispered, sending shivers down my snine.

"Evan." I said, stopping him from kissing me. "Evan, I need to tell you something."

Evan pulled away from me, staring at me with curiosity in his eyes. "What is it, babe?"

"Reason number ten," I started off, feeling a smile already lingering its way onto my lips, "You, Evan Woods. I love you."
