64. Magical Swirls

Oliver's POV

When I heard the alarm go off, I felt my heart stall a bit. There was electricity flowing through my veins quite literally, but all I could think about was whether or not Devon's okay. I was unplugged from the various machines, and I heard someone say, "Sick the demon on the attackers."

I assume that this is what my puppy was talking about with the whole invasion, but it did sort of hurt when they pulled me up from the table. My feet were burning, but I kept my balance. My dad didn't raise me, but he didn't train me to be a wimp.

As I was pushed through their house, I felt my head pounding in a slow, pulsing pain. Their hardwood floors didn't do wonders for the soles of my feet, but I dealt with it until we reached the front door. As soon as I passed the threshold, I saw a body plummet from the roof, and my heart stopped when I saw the eyes. Nonono, this can't be happening.

Instead of even attempting to keep up our little acting project, I tore out of the people's grip behind me and sprinted over to where his body lie. If I though my heart was slamming before, it was on fire now.

"Dev," I breathed while crouching next to him. His normally flawless face had a scrape along the forehead, and his expression was stuck in one of slight panic. "Puppy." As I used the nickname, I shook his shoulders slightly, but there was no response. "C'mon, you gotta get up."

Finally, I was pulled back, but it wasn't by who I thought it was. "You have to help us beat them!" I was surprised by the desperation in my boyfriend's uncle's gaze, and it got my ass into gear. I twirled around when I sensed a vampire behind me and decked the lead woman in the face. As she was falling, the crazy uncle pulled a weapon from his back and shot it directly into her heart. I saw a perfectly rounded wooden stake sticking out of her chest, and I looked at the man in shock. "Don't look so shocked, I have weapons for pretty much every supernatural being."

When I nodded at him, we launched into fight together, and I noticed how good of a team we made. With my brute force and his weird stake shooter, we were able to take out almost 50 vampires. Of course, with everyone else fighting, we easily took down the coven even though it lasted nearly 4 hours.

Once the battle was over, I collapsed onto the field exhausted, but I knew that there was one more thing I had to do. I limped over to my fallen puppy, and I felt his neck for a pulse shakily. A soft hand rested on top of my shoulder, and I turned back to see his Papa staring down at me. His eyes were also nervous, and he got down onto his knees next to me.

Suddenly, I felt a little flutter under my fingers, and I realized that it was his heart still beating slowly. "He's still alive, but only barely. We need to get medical attention."

Papa sighed his relief, and he stepped back before transforming into a beautiful sandy colored wolf. I caught onto his implications and carefully lifted Devon up onto his back before taking off my belt and using it to secure the boy. On cue, the older man ran off until the woods swiftly, and I felt my heart leave with him. I'm nothing without my puppy, absolutely nothing. I wish I realized that earlier so none of this would have happened.

"Is everyone alright?" Dev's other father shouted, and he got answers from everyone else in the clearing that was friendly.  There's so many bodies that even I felt remorse, but it had to be done. We walked back towards our home, and I felt a third hand rub my back. What is it with these people and back rubbing? I turned around to face the short vampire, and I was shocked to see he was... Smiling?

"Thank you for helping my son. I had half a mind to kill you after the last stunt you pulled, but today... I trust that you love him."

"Thank you, sir." I beamed at the revelation of his trust, and I got a fatherly head rub. I never even got those from my own father, so it made my smile even brighter. I'm sure my dimples are showing by now.

"Please, call me dad. I know that yours is a jackass."

"Really?"

"Mhm."

That made me launch off of my feet and hug him tightly, and we went tumbling onto the forest floor. "Thank you thank you thank you!" I squealed, and I could tell he was smiling.

"Anytime... But if you hurt my son again, we're going to have a problem."

"Of course."

I stood up from the ground, and I extended my hand to lift him as well. The man took it gratefully, and he was pulled all the way into my chest. "We should catch up to the group."

"Yeah, we should. I want to get back as soon as possible to make sure he's okay."

As we wandered through the woods together, I got to know the man who was my enemy two days ago. It was good to know that I wasn't hated in their house anymore, and I had to hope that I wouldn't have to deal with any more issues. I just want to be with Devon forever without all of these stupid distractions.

As soon as we arrived, I could see his other parent pacing on the steps, and it made me nervous. Without any more words, I raced up the steps, and he pulled me down the hallways carefully. "What's happening!?"

"He broke something in his back, and they're trying to heal him. Otherwise... He might end up paralyzed for the rest of his life from the waist down."

"I... That's horrible."

"It is, but... Well at least he's alive."

We finally reached his room in the medicine ward, and I pushed open the door to see him. He was laying down on his front still passed out, and his adoptive family was working hard. The mother had a red orb of magic over one section on his back while the other two offered their energy, and I assumed that was where he was injured.

I moved forward slowly, and the woman looked up at me sadly. "How... How is he?"

"Not good. I'm not sure if this is working."

I stepped around the bed and held out my arm to offer my energy as well, and she gratefully took it. As soon as we made contact, her magic basically exploded, and we were all flung backwards into the wall. "What was that?" I shouted while gold light swirled around the small of his back.

"I don't know!"

What happen next made my head spin in ways unimaginable.
