You are the key

According to Nobuhiko, it seemed that he was the only one who knew how to help her.

'Kiryu could not work it out. But he mentioned that you knew how to make medication for her-' Haruka paused in mid-thought. Now that he thought about it, Zane should know, right? It seemed like they spent a lot of time together.

"Is something wrong?" Zane asked.

"I just wanted to ask you. My wife, at night, there is something wrong with her." Haruka chose his words carefully. It was difficult for him to explain since he did not understand the circumstances well.

"I remember the first time you saw it; you called me in the middle of the night frantic. When I told you I could not help unless I saw her in person, you got angrier, but still, you brought her. Since my darkness would have a negative impact on her, I only watched from outside the room. But it was more than enough."

Haruka blinked at that piece of information.

"We made the medication together in the hideout." Zane trailed off. "The ingredients are there too."

At those words, he averted his gaze. Of course, it would not be that simple.

"However, most of those ingredients, I can recreate as long as I have the base." Zane paused. "Flowers, the ones you picked for her. You have not made the bouquet yet, right?"

"I haven't."

"Let me use those." Zane trailed off. "But the key ingredient in that was your blood."

Huh?

Zane exhaled deeply. "You seemed very reluctant to use your blood to help her because of the experiments I conducted on you. But I will tell you straight up, those experiments I did to you was only for show. You were the only subject I did not try to control using such methods. I knew explaining that to you would not help, so I sneakily used the blood from your blood tests in the medication."

All of the stuff Zane said confused him, yet it felt familiar. When he made the medicine, this person was with him; no, they made it together. 'I relied on him first when I saw my wife was in danger.' That is the thing that stood out to him.

"My blood," Haruka repeated. "Then until you finish making it, can I use that to ease her pain?"

"It should work."

A relieved sigh passed his lips. He does not like seeing her in that condition, although there are some nights where Lila is okay. Most of the time, her condition frightened him so much.

"But you should know, right? It is only a temporary measure. Terashima Lila is dying."

Haruka clenched his fist when he heard Zane say the words he tried to deny.

"Austin Kiryu too, but his is far slower than her."

At those words, his eyes widened, alarmed. Even Kiryu? It should not surprise him after seeing the sight from the other day. But it still shocked him.

"A way to save them." Zane trailed off. "You need your memories, Haruka. You certainly came up with something based on how you behaved before you left to go to New York. People say the ones who will end this mess are Terashima Sumire, Lila, and Austin Kiryu. But I do not think that is the case."

Haruka froze, realizing what Zane was about to say.

"Karashima Haruka, you are certainly the key and light of hope people need."

Him? It all sounded like a lie. After all, he read those internet articles and personally asked Ayase Kotori. The girl seemed very reluctant to share the information with him, but she eventually caved in. Whenever he was cooking in the kitchen, and she would come over to cook too, she talked a lot and learned everything.

The past him was not necessarily a bad person; he loved Lila deeply. But he did not have any confidence, which led to many misunderstandings. It leads to him hurting her a lot.

He did many bad things and hurt so many people. So how can Zane say he is the key?

"I think you are biased because we are friends."

Zane chuckled. "You can see it that way if you wish eventually, the truth will come out."

The truth, huh? Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow. Even if he regains his memories, would it be worth it if he loses the current him? Lila seems to like that he is more honest and more attentive when it comes to her.

'I do find it strange sometimes, but I do not dislike it.'

It was almost like mentioning it was a curse. Tonight was one of the many nights where Lila had that smell of death around her. The sight of her curled up in a ball shape in pain when he returned to the room was painful. But he did not falter, unlike the first few times.

Haruka took a deep breath before he walked over to the bed. He extended his hand out and pierced his neck with the small blade Zane gave him.

The moment he did, fresh blood poured out of his neck, and Lila immediately sat up. She looked around puzzled, and then her gaze fell towards him. Her eye color had turned red, and she was looking at him hungrily.

"Haruka, your bleeding."

"Mm." Haruka closed the remaining distance and sat down on the bed. The moment he did, she pushed him down, and her lips were on his neck in seconds.

It was almost like she knew that he deliberately provoked him. She was still sniffling his neck for a few minutes before he felt a sharp graze on his neck. She was sucking on the blood from the knife wound moments ago, and a heavy scent of blood filled the room.

'So this is my blood.' Haruka did not know what to think of it; the smell was not like Lila's. But it did not seem normal either. He recalled what Zane said about him being special; it might be like that.

On the way to the room, Zane explained to him how the old him was very reluctant to use his hanyou abilities.

'You did not want to accept the cursed blood inside you. But just because you don't accept it does not mean your powers go away.' It seemed he had large negative side effects as a penalty for not accepting his abilities. He suffered a lot.

Does the idea of being reduced to a blood-sucking beast that is neither human nor vampire frightens him?

If he thought about it now, the current him is not bothered by it. However, the current and past him have entirely different personalities. There are some traits and some emotions that remain the same.

There must be something else; there must be another reason why he did not want to use his abilities for so long. As far as he has seen, his powers are not dangerous. But Zane himself said he was worried about him losing control, so perhaps there is an issue somewhere.
