bzzt bzzt. I was awoken from my very comfortable slumber by a loud vibration. To not be woken up was exactly why I disabled my ringtone, but I had thrown my phone on the headboard of my bed in a rush to hit the mattress earlier that night. I didn't follow my usual habit of putting my phone on the desk next to me, and as a result, I forgot two things. The top of my headboard is very narrow, and objects can move if they vibrate too much. Though loud, it wasn't the sound of the vibration that woke me up. My phone fell off the headboard and landed on my face. What's strange is that I wasn't woken up by the impact of the phone dropping onto the bridge of my nose. I was woken up by the vibrations I felt on my face, meaning I must have slept through it being on my face for some time after impact.
I picked my phone off my face and unlocked it. I started searching for the reason it was still vibrating so I could remove whatever it was from my phone. I discovered the root of the problem within my notifications.
Amari Kazue: 387 Missed Calls, 4392 Unread Messages
I was used to receiving twenty or thirty texts every two hours or so, but 4392? This was just beyond the pale. My phone's clock showed it was way before sunrise. Given that I went to sleep later than usual, the obsession and or boredom needed to send that many texts within four hours is pretty impressive. It's even more impressive that almost all of them were full, coherent messages. Some crazy imagination she's got there, and that's just the texts. I'm sure the voicemails were similar to the texts if not better because I could have heard Kazue say whatever nonsense, but I didn't feel like listening to all three hundred eighty-seven of them. That's what her onslaught of messages was. Nonsense. Nonsense indeed, but it was so coherent that you'd almost be tricked into thinking whatever ridiculous topic she's talking about is actually important, and I admit that was impressive. The voicemails would have taken too long to listen to. I didn't have time at the dead of night to listen to hours of random messages. However, I did look through the texts, and I did see something that was actually important. I also found some unimportant ones that were pretty "Interesting", so here are those first.
The other snow women and I at the village got bored, so we invented this game where you pass around a hand warmer until it fully heats up. The loser is the one who catches it and gets burnt. For normal people it's boring but for people essentially made from the cold, it's quite an exciting thrill
I found a weird-looking animal frozen in ice. It has a pointy head and strange-looking wings. It might be a reptile of sorts, but it looks like it flew at one point and it has very pointy bones. Guess we'll never know, we don't have the heat needed to melt it out here. That would be too dangerous
Despite living here my entire life it never ceases to amaze me how everything here is perpetually frozen and snow is abundant even when it's 100°F outside. To this day I don't know how it works, maybe I don't want to find out
And the actually relevant grand finale, which I found hiding within the barrage of messages:
I'm coming to visit today. I am on my way as I send this. See you in the morning
Sent two hours ago
It would have been very nice to know that last week or even yesterday. It would've been nice if I had just been told in advance at all. Telling me on the day of, where had I followed my usual routine I wouldn't even have seen the message until later that day, was incredibly uncool. Zero time to prepare, but I didn't expect much different from Kazue.
It should be fine if she visits. But if for whatever reason she wants to vacation here, I'll have to get her situated with a room. It might be hard to fully accommodate, since Noriko, Rin, and the others-
Oh no. I forgot. My memory has lapsed once again. They're all out on their own individual trips, so I'm alone here for the week. If Kazue showed up while Noriko and Rin were still here, they'd probably try to kill her and perhaps me as well, but that's manageable. I was frightened thinking about what might happen if Kazue and I are the only ones around. I wasn't afraid of what I might do. I was afraid of what she might try to get away with. Such an ambitiously carefree person is undoubtedly trouble.
Kazue told me she was coming with a few hours' notice. It was the middle of the night but it wasn't much longer until she would be here.
I couldn't fall asleep again that night.
