In front of the entrance to Ganzhou Shang city, we stumbled upon a quaint little stall where we decided to indulge in our meal. Once our appetites were satisfied, Zing Ah proposed a leisurely stroll to the palace, offering us a respite from our continuous riding. Personally, I welcomed the idea of walking, even if it meant prolonging our journey to our final destination. As I set foot in the capital for the very first time, my eyes widened in awe. The sight that unfolded before me was nothing short of remarkable. From the grand carriages that exuded prestige to the countless shops and restaurants that lined the bustling streets, everything seemed to pulsate with life.
It was a sensory overload as I witnessed my first encounter with a gambling den and a pleasure house. Zing, acting as my guide, led me through this vibrant city, and my eyes eagerly absorbed every detail, savoring this newfound experience. As we made our way further into the heart of the capital, I couldn't help but notice the imposing mansions lining the road that led towards the palace. The sight was truly breathtaking, and I marveled at the grandeur of these structures. We walked for what seemed like a quarter of an hour before a massive building came into view. It was the legendary Jade Palace, and its presence commanded attention and reverence.
The Jade Palace stood tall and magnificent, like a beacon of power and authority. It was unlike anything I had ever seen in my fifteen years of existence, except for the paintings my mother used to show me of her family's ancestral home. She would often regale me with stories of the Dragon Residence, describing its splendor and significance.
According to my mother, the Dragon Residence had been a gift to our ancestors from the first Jade Emperor. It was a token of gratitude for their support in helping him ascend the throne, even amidst competition from his own brothers. The first Jade Emperor had chosen to bestow the Dragon's House upon our ancestors, symbolizing their loyalty and valor.
Legend had it that in the first year of the Jade Emperor's rule, he had decreed that all male descendants of the Zho family would lead the imperial army as their generals. This honorable responsibility had been entrusted to my mother's family ever since. They served the imperial army and the palace with unwavering loyalty and dedication, carrying on the legacy of their ancestors.
As I stood before the grandeur of the Jade Palace, these stories echoed in my mind, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and awe. The history and heritage embedded within those walls were palpable, and I knew that I was about to embark on an extraordinary journey within its hallowed halls.
From my vantage point outside the dragon entrance wall, the palace loomed before me, its grandeur resembling that of a bustling village. Encircling the palace stood a colossal wall, constructed with a harmonious blend of jade and stone. Each residence boasted its own unique entrance, exuding an air of individuality amidst the opulence. Adorning the towering wall were two majestic dragon statues, positioned at either end with an awe-inspiring presence.
Guided by Zing Ah, we navigated our way towards the gate, our anticipation growing with every step. As we neared, a guard stationed at the entrance abandoned his post, a radiant smile illuminating his face as he sprinted towards Zing Ah. Upon reaching him, the guard reverently bowed his head, a silent gesture of respect and deference. "Big brother Zing Ah, you have returned sooner than anticipated," the guard named Bai Chen greeted with surprise etched on his face.
"Yes, Bai Chen. There were unforeseen complications on our journey, leaving us with little time to rest. However, I promise to seek you out later so that we may catch up. For now, I must accompany young master Cai Lung to meet the general," Zing Ah explained, his voice filled with a sense of urgency and importance.
"I see, big brother. I comprehend," Bai Chen replied, his gaze shifting towards me, curiosity flickering in his eyes, silently begging for answers. The guard hurriedly made his way back to the gate and rapped on it. A moment later, the gate swung open, revealing another guard who peered out, his gaze fixed on Bai Chen. Bai Chen gestured towards Zing Ah and me, and the guard's eyes followed his gesture. Without hesitation, the guard opened the gate wider, allowing us to pass through.
As we stepped into the Dragon Residence, a cacophony of voices filled the air. Everyone seemed to be shouting and calling out, their excitement palpable upon hearing of Zing Ah's return. I followed closely behind Zing Ah as we traversed a wooden walkway, resembling a bridge, which led us towards what I can only describe as a miniature palace.
From within the walls, I finally got a good look at the Dragon Residence. It was a sight to behold. The bridge extended over a serene pond, its crystal-clear waters revealing a multitude of lilies and fish. I leaned over the edge of the bridge, mesmerized by the tranquil beauty of the scene. The pond seamlessly flowed towards a magnificent set of jade doors, beckoning us to enter.
With Zing Ah leading the way, we approached the jade doors, anticipation building within me. I couldn't help but wonder what awaited us on the other side, within the heart of the Dragon Residence. As we made our way through the Dragon Residence, I couldn't help but notice the presence of guards and maids bustling about the grounds. Their gazes seemed to linger on me, and I could hear snippets of their hushed conversations. The elder maids, in particular, appeared to be intrigued by my presence, their whispers carrying just loud enough for me to catch.
"Lady Lin Er..." one maid murmured to another, her voice filled with disbelief. "No, it can't be... that child looks far too young to be her. But my, she is undeniably beautiful," the other maid replied, her words tinged with awe. "Of course, no beauty could ever compare to that of Lady Lin Er. That's why it was such a shame..." another maid chimed in, shaking her head with disappointment.
Their words struck a chord within me. I bowed my head, avoiding their curious gazes, and continued to walk silently behind Zing Ah. It was clear to me now what they all thought about my father and mother. The weight of their judgment and expectations pressed upon me, reinforcing the sense of inadequacy I had always felt. "Enough with the idle talk, return to your duties!" Zing Ah's voice boomed, causing the maids to scurry away, feigning productivity. As we neared the grand jade doors, a young boy dashed straight into Zing Ah embrace, his words pouring out in excitement.
"You're finally back, Zing Ah! I've missed you dearly! Father is consumed by his usual gloom. He's locked himself away in the war room, obsessing over the strategy maps. He refuses to come out," the boy, seemingly my age, lamented with a pout. "Ah, my apologies, Zing Ah. I seem to have forgotten my manners," young master Zhang En Lai replied, as Zing Ah graciously stepped aside, allowing Zhang En Lai to see me clearly. "This is Master Cai Lung," Zing Ah introduced, motioning towards me. Zhang En Lai scrutinized me from head to toe, his eyes rolling dismissively after his swift evaluation.
En Lai's words stung, questioning my title and mocking my appearance. Anger surged within me, ready to retort, bgut before I could, Zing Ah swiftly knocked En Lai upside the head, causing him to cry out in pain.
"With tattered garments and a more feminine appearance, his attire gives off a girlish vibe rather than a masculine one. En lai couldn't help but question." Why is he addressed as a young master? Could he be a fresh addition to the assisting team? If so, his designation should not be young master." En lai stated aloud glancing between myself and Zing Ah. Anger surged within me as he mocked the clothes lovingly crafted by mu quin. Just as I was about to retort, Zing Ah swiftly intervened, delivering a firm knock to his head.
"Ow!" En Lai exclaimed, rubbing his head in disbelief. "Why did you do that?" he demanded an explanation from Zing Ah.
"Show some respect, En Lai." Zing Ah scolded, his voice stern. " Young Master Cai Lung is your older brother," he revealed, his words causing Zhang En Lai's eyes to widen in surprise. His initial disbelief soon turned into a narrowed gaze, followed by a mischievous smirk directed at me.
