Riley and Kyle weren't prepared for the flood of monsters that came into view. Kyle was feeling hopeless and he was about to release the restriction on his martial outfit.
"Don't you dare take the easy way out on this," Gramps said.
"There's too many, we're going to get killed!" Kyle was panicking a little.
"With that attitude, you'll certainly die, but this is called a training pit. They threw a level 12 like you in here. They want to train you, not kill you. You can survive this as you are, but it will be hard.
This is the kind of training you've been lacking. Everything has been too easy for you. Face it head-on. Improve your fighting skills not your brute strength.
Do you think real life ever cares what level you are? This is your chance to soar!" Gramps said.
Kyle reconsidered and rushed forward to face his enemies. The monsters were mindless creatures, nothing more than rabid beasts.
Since they weren't sentient and they were clearly twisted by their masters it would be better to put them out of their misery. This Barron Kingsley would pay for his sins against life!
Rushing into the center of the group, Kyle launched an AOE skill, Monkey King Rocks! This was one of the several fist techniques contained in Monkey King Rock Fist.
He smashed his fist into the ground compressing a bunch of spirit energy into a tiny point.
The spirit energy passed into the earth and the condensed energy exploded out like a ripple on a still lake. The monsters within a twenty-foot radius were thrown into the air where Riley made short work of them.
The Monkey King Rocks AOE required 10% of Kyle's spirit energy. At best he could launch ten of these. Instead of doing the same attack, he used his speed to flow in and out of the monsters.
He had never seen these monsters, some were big with thick shells and others were skinny with long claws, and there were small ones that puffed out explosive balls.
There were a few creatures that jumped from shadows to launch an attack. One of the attacks nearly got him in the head.
The martial clothes he made were pretty tough but they started to get torn from the attacks. Tears in the fabric mixed with blood from scratches created by the creatures.
His augmented healing quickly dealt with his injuries but he was already down to 50% spirit energy. If things continued, then he would be exhausted to death.
It was then that he noticed Riley was very carefully attacking and let Kyle tank the monsters for him. He seemed to want to use Kyle as a meat shield.
That wasn't going to work. Kyle built up some aggro from the creatures and then lead them right to Riley.
"I'm tired of being your meat shield; why don't' we trade places for a while!" Kyle yelled at Riley.
Riley was surprised and frightened by the sudden inundation of creatures. He turned to answer Kyle's remarks when he noticed he couldn't find Kyle anywhere.
Kyle found a corner filled with shadows and put up a temporary illusion formation. Even the shadow monsters would get lost when they entered. It looked like Kyle disappeared.
While Riley acted as the new center of aggression for the monsters, Kyle calmed himself and rested while taking pills to restore his health and spirit energy.
These were pills he made himself under the watchful eyes of Dr. Heller. He was happy to have them now. After he recovered he waited until Riley was desperate.
He took out a thunder ball and threw it past Riley and activated it with a thought. The monsters near the thunder ball were incinerated.
"No more of that, use your strength! If it is just a matter of having artifacts to win then why bother training your body?" Gramps asked aggressively.
Kyle was flummoxed. This was the first time he felt that he was actually being trained. Usually, he was given a mission and left to figure it out for himself.
He collected his formation and stepped out of the shadows and punched a few monsters as he casually walked to Riley.
"I don't mind letting you fight all of these creatures. From now on, you either pull your weight, or I'll leave you here to fend for yourself, understand," Kyle said aggressively to Riley.
Riley didn't know he was bluffing; he would never leave a comrade to die. Even if that comrade wasn't much of a comrade.
"Deal," Riley said. He was worn out from the battle. He didn't think he would survive much longer, but he could tell Kyle was back at full power.
"You have some pills you can share?"
"No."
"How about another one of those exploding things?"
"No."
"Are you lying?"
"Why would I lie? I want to live as much as you do. Our only hope to get out of this is to work together."
Actually, Kyle would have given him a recovery pill, but since he had alien physiology he had no idea if medicine would heal him or kill him.
To safely give these aliens his pills; He would first need to examine the natives to know if any of his medicines would be useful. The middle of a battle wasn't the time to experiment.
At this time, they had both gotten through about forty percent of the monsters. They still had a long way to go, but they could see a little hope.
"I'm gonna bounce them up, you put them down. Ready?" Kyle asked.
"Ready!" Riley yelled.
Jumping into the air, Kyle smashed the Monkey King Rocks technique into the earth once more.
As soon as he connected with the ground and sent monsters all around him flying into the air; he ran to the monsters that were unaffected and smashed them into the direction of Riley's sword.
When he felt Riley had enough monsters to carve up; he used his Monkey King Rock Fist Punch to start crippling the monsters still standing. His speed allowed him to avoid attacks.
His heightened senses kept him a step ahead of the monsters. After another hour of fighting; they cleared away the last of the monsters.
They both collapsed on the ground completely exhausted. Breathing heavily they were both incredibly happy and relieved. They survived!
"Don't relax, you think it's over?" Gramps laughed.
It was then he heard the sound of another horde rumbling to them.
"Riley, get up! We're not done!"
