PART FOUR: DIANE
Nothing feels better than a nice cup of Lipton black tea. It feels like you have a sunshine right in your cup, tea brightens up my mood when I'm from a night shift. My head is literally breaking from all the tiredness, gladly my twins agree and understood that I will have a night shift today or last night or yesterday or I don't know. I took the last sip of tea and the cup, putting it away in the cubbard.
It's still 5:30 dawn, I have time to relax for one hour and 30 minutes. I turn on my radio and play my favorite song. This song was just twenty-two years ago because it was released in 1998 but it feels like yesterday. Still melodious and calming to the ears. I don't really understand the songs these day. It's very noisy, very irritating and not my cup of tea. My ears are very sensitive to loud noises, it feels like my eardrums are going to explode and pour out blood.
Fancy meeting you alone in the crowd
Couldn't help but notice your smile
While everybody else around us is going about
Can we just stop and talk awhile?
I've been often told our world's growing old
And that friends are harder to find
Do tell me more about yourself
We could share a thought or two
Now who would mind?
Maybe then we could go for a ride
Drive down to the countryside
Get away from the gray
And frenzied hurly-burly of the city life
This song kinda reminds me of my high school times in back in Sonatrica International School, a school only for Catholics. Lucy always stalks her high school crush Heo Min-Jun, he's Korean and I admit, she is head over heals for that man and Lucy was overjoyed when Min-Jun asked her for a date and this time they are engaged. Don't know when will they get married. Well, at least she didn't choose the wrong guy to date. Not like David.
I don't have any stupid crushes on guys when I was in middle school because I am really straight-laced in studying. Whenever I have a free time, I use that time to study. Not to look for your destiny. That's stupid cuz that's not even real. Destiny is from a fairy tale only like in the Little Mermaid.
Early yet to say what lies ahead
It's the first day of the rest of our lives
Can we just stop and talk awhile
Get to know each other
Who are we to know?
Love could be waiting at the end
'Round that bend and so
Let's stop and talk awhile
Maybe then we could go for a ride
Drive down to the countryside
Get away from the gray
And frenzied hurly-burly of the city life
Early yet to say what lies ahead
It's the first day of the rest of our lives
Can we just stop and talk awhile
Get to know each other
Who are we to know?
Love could be waiting at the end
'Round that bend and so
Let's stop and talk awhile
Let's stop and talk awhile
Let's stop and talk awhile
Let's stop and talk awhile
"Stupid." I mumbled to myself and chuckled.
That song is also my parent's favorite song, I remembered when I was still young--well when my sister was still alive and I was still young, they would dance to the beat of the music and we would sing. That is best memory of my life, well I do have a lot of happy memories, just like when my father dug a for the well and he fell in it himself. Mom who was throwing out trash and some junk fell on her head. Maria, singing in the bathroom and I who was reading a book not looking where I was going fell into the swimming pool.
I took a glance of the big picture with me and my sister that I hung on my wall eleven years ago and a small laugh escapes my mouth. The angelic smile of my sister tells me something that I am always stupid. I get it, I'm stupid I know that but don't you think that we have a lot in common since we are sisters. No, doubt about it. Some people even think that we are twins.
Still daydreaming about what my life is when my older sister was alive, I didn't even notice that it was already dawn. Thankfully, my window curtains are open so it's easy for me to spot whether it's time to go to work or not. Again, the doctor's work is never done I got that from watching Doc McStuffins with my children. Well, how is it supposed to be done when you're always taking care of patients 24/7.
I stood up and give my body a little stretch. It's already 6:01, better to start the day early. I am not a laid-back person who keeps on relaxing when it's almost time for work. Time takes it doesn't give, that a true fact. I get my phone from the desk and went out of the office.
"Is Dr. Escudero doing fine, he looks weak when I visited him this morning?" Dr. Magpantay ask me while stacking papers on her desk.
"Yes he did look gloomy today, it's just because of his treatment but he's doing fine. Don't worry." I said. "He's a strong doctor, I'm positive he can make it."
Dr. Jade sits on her chair and takes a sip of her coffee. "Want a drink? I already made you a cup. I you want."
Why does everybody forget that I freaking hate coffee. Is it because of my mother and sister who likes coffee. Excuse me, but I am like my father who definitely hates coffee.
I shake my head in disagreement. "No thank you, I hate coffee remember."
"Yes, she does hate coffee. Dominique only drinks tea."
Jade and I turned around and see Lucy holding a hand full of charts.
I smirked. "That I am.."
"By the way, can someone make me a cup of coffee. I really need one." said Lucy.
Jade gives the cup of coffee to Lucy that was supposed to be mine. She drinks it like a giant and puts it in her desk. "I don't know why you hate coffee but's it's amazing. It turns your mood from zombie to angel."
You still don't know why I hate coffee do 'ya. That is the biggest secret I won't tell. It's really embarrassing and I don't want to dare share it to other people, even my best friends. I can't trust anybody with my secret, if I mean anybody I mean anybody.
I took a glace of the clock and notice that it is just 7:20 A.M. Wow, Lucy finished her rounds early, as in very early. She never finishes her rounds everybody in the hospital even the patients know that. For someone who is a very talkative person. Congratulations for finally finishing your rounds in time doctor.
"That's new." I said. "You never finish your rounds very early."
"Well she does now." Dr. Mailyn butted in. "I think Gomez learned to not be so talkative."
"Say what now?!" Lucy furrowed her brows and the doctors inside the office started laughing lightly.
"Don't mind that, it's a piece of shit." Dr. Gianna said.
"Language." I corrected.
Whenever I hear a bad word I always say language just to remind me that and others that saying bad word are not good. Well, I do say bad words and my sister would used to say Oh, you kiss your mother with that mouth. That's when I stopped saying bad words except when I am mad though. I can seem to control what I am saying, it's like a magician's hat, you don't know what comes out of it.
I crack my knuckles and starting typing on the keyboard. So many charts, so many things to do. Must finish these charts before going to my clinic, there are a lot of patients scheduled for an appointment today so that is why I must type fast. Faster than the speed of light.
Other doctors are getting ready for their surgery some doctors are just like me who are typing on their computers. The office which was noisy and diverting became silent as the grave. This is my type of working the one you don't need to hush everyone up because they are to noisy. Back in Canada doctors there were so enthusiastic they always talk even though if you want to focus.
A random scene comes into my mind at lunch back in Canada, my co-worker, Dr. Ana Yamaguchi, (full Japanese but studies in Canada) used to bother me during lunch break, that's the only time I get to breathe from the hustle and that doctor always wants to talk to me and there was a time that I shouted at her face. Happy Ending? No, still bothers me.
I type happily in my computer when someone bursts into the office. Geez, now what is the emergency. First Escudero now who the hell is it now. Don't tell me it's an accident.
"Doctors a patient was just rushed to the ER." The nurse said.
Bummer!
A doctor was supposed to speak up when I cut him of by saying. "I'll go."
"But doctor, you still have a lot to do." The doctor protested.
"Mind if you'll do it for me?" I asked.
The kind doctor nodded and went out of the office, rushing to the ER.
"How's the patient?" I asked the Head of the ER.
"She is doing all right doctor but her life is at risk, she had a heart attack." The ER head said.
Seriously, another heart attack. I walk to the patients bed and is surprised to see both my parents there. What is this patient, a VIP? I thought we have no VIPs in the hospital. Why are my parents here. Curiosity struck me hard so I come closer to where the patient is laying and my eyes went wide as a tomato.
"What?!" I shrieked in shock.
No way, it's my godmother and David's mother.
