One crystal glows a bright mixture of red, yellow, and orange. The other crystal shines brightly, but doesn't change color. The front of the podium glows a faint white and the number 100 appears under both crystals, as if chiseled into the gold. The room goes deathly silent as everyone's mouth hangs open with shocked expressions.
"D-d-dual affinity and perfect 100!" Someone In the room said. Hearing someone say it out loud snapped everyone from their shocked states. Whispers started to spread in the room. Some people were excited for the future of the kingdom. These people included my parents and nobles that are loyal to the king. Some were jealous and looked at me with envious gazes. My beloved half brother definitely belongs to this category. Then their are those that just hate that this happened. The two that fit the description are the Queen who's currently glaring at me with a look of rage written all over her face, and her father Charles Freemont. Charles schools his expression almost immediately, but I can still see the furious look in his eyes.
The podium does three things. One crystal glows if you have battle energy, and the other glows the color of your attribute if you have magic. Since they both activated that means I have dual affinity. The podium will then gauge the control you have over your magic/battle energy. 100 means I have perfect control over both magic and battle energy. I turn to see my mother next to me, and she has a bright smile on her face.
"My little baby is a genius!" She yells as she throws her arms around me, and lifts me up. She suddenly remembers that we're in front of almost every noble in the Fortis kingdom, and sets me back down with an embarrassed look on her face. As the room starts getting a bit loud my father moves forward to speak.
"Settle down!" The king says in a loud voice, but the room is to loud for anyone to hear. My father turns to a guard and whispers something to him. The guards scattered around the room unsheathe their swords, and bang them on their shields. Hearing the clangs of metal hitting metal, the guests go deathly quiet and watch the guards with fearful expressions.
"Good, you've all settled down. We are going to take a small intermission, so I may speak to my son in private. Talk amongst yourselves while the waitstaff brings you food and drink. Dinner will start when we return." He says and leaves immediately, dragging me and mother along as the guards follow behind us. Making our way down the hall, we enter one of the many rooms used to greet guests. After securing the room the guards leave and only me and my parents remain. My father looks worried while my mother can't keep the smile from her face.
"Why are you smiling like a loon?" Henry asks.
"What did I tell you when you were worried about Syrins awakening ceremony?" Astrid countered.
"You said not to worry because our son has us, and no matter what affinity he gets or what talent he has we'll look out for him no matter what." My father said.
"Yes, and that doesn't change now does it?" She asked.
"Of course it doesn't change, but this is a serious issue. It's great and amazing that our son has dual affinities, but we need to take precautions. We have enemies that would jump at the chance to kill our son without knowing he has dual affinities. What do you think is going to happen when they find out?"
"So we up the guards, keep the aerie on watch, and if he needs to leave the palace I'll go to guard him."
"I guess that's all we can do, but what about his training?" He asks.
"You both know I'm here right?" I ask from my seat on the sofa. They both turn to me with guilty faces.
"Sorry honey." Astrid apologizes.
"It's fine, but what's the aerie?" I ask. My mother looks unsure if she should say, and turns to my father.
"The aerie are a type of shadow guards. They're only loyal to the king, and they protect the kingdom without being seen or heard." My father explains.
"Awesome!" I exclaim, causing my father to chuckle.
"Yes they are, but you can't tell anyone about them. The only people that know they exist are in this room. I'm only telling you about them because your going to have your own permanent team of aerie guarding you, so you'll see them sooner or later."
"Alright, I won't say anything. What about my training?" I ask.
"Since you both have the same attribute, your father will train you in fire magic." Astrid says. My father looks like he's about to disagree, but a glare from Astrid keeps him quiet. "I'll teach you everything I've learned as an adventurer, and all we need now is a good battle energy teacher."
"I'll finding someone to teach him about battle energy." My father says.
After our chat, we head back to the banquet. The sour part of my family seems to have left already. The rest of the night was filled with people trying to suck up to me. My mother could tell I was getting annoyed, and got me out of there early. When we returned to my room Nova was on her perch waiting for my return.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Nova." I say and Nova flaps her wings and cry's out. "Hey, I said I was sorry no need to have an attitude."
"Can you really understand her?" My mother asks.
"I can feel her emotions when I'm near her, so just now she felt happy and annoyed. Happy that I'm back and annoyed that I was gone for so long." I explain.
"I wonder how you made that connection with her? Could it be because she's a core beast and you were there when she hatched?" My mother mused.
"That's possible." I say, as I make my way towards Nova to pet her. "Hey mom, are you sure it's alright for dad to teach me fire magic?" I ask.
"Yes, why do you ask?" She replies.
"Well, isn't he really busy? He's barely around as it is, so how will he make time for training me?" I ask, and my mother shoots to me and wraps me up in a hug.
"Sweetheart, your father loves you very much. He talks about you nonstop when we're alone. How about this, I'll talk to your father and come up with a schedule that will work for your training. I'll also find a way for you to spend more time with him outside of training as well. It's getting late why don't you get changed for bed" she says. I wipe a stray tear from my eye, change my close, and hop into bed. I think I'll skip practice tonight and sleep early.
"Goodnight sweetheart." My mom says as she tucks me in and kisses my forehead.
"Goodnight mom."
POV Astrid
As I leave Syrins room I shut the door behind me, and see My husband standing outside the room with a sad look on his face.
"You heard?" I ask, and he nods. "What are you going to do?"
"I'll make time, somehow."
(A/N: You have to remember that Syrins and Kyles souls merged, so the Syrin part of his soul still yearns for his fathers attention. He doesn't yearn for it as much, but that feeling is still there.)
