Chapter 32: What It Means To Be An Adventurer

"What is an adventurer exactly?" I asked the other registration woman.

"An adventurer is a person who travels around doing things called quests. Quests usually require the adventurer to defeat a certain monster or collect certain objects. The reward depends on the quest's level of difficulty, though I'd imagine your party could handle any quest," she answered politely.

"What is EXP?"

"EXP stands for experience points. Every time you defeat a monster, you gain points. The amount depends on the strength of the monster. When you reach a certain amount of EXP, your level rises. Every time you level up, you can learn a new skill. Your class depends on what skills you choose. For example, your friends are all archwizards because they use advanced magic. However, since you haven't learned any skills, you could become a plain adventurer, a thief, a paladin, or a priest. Of course, there are more classes so I suggest you learn about all of them before choosing one."

"How do I learn a skill? Since I'm already at level twenty, I should be able to learn some skills, right?"

"Yes. After every five levels, you can learn a skill. To do that, you must have someone show you a skill. If you want to gain that skill, all you have to do is select it on your card."

I looked down at my card and saw a variety of different skills like Steal, Fireball, Heal, and Teleport. All of them seemed pretty interesting, but I decided to learn more about the different classes before choosing to learn any of them.

"Any more questions?"

"One more. Where can I learn more about classes?"

"There's a book on the shelf over there that should help. I wish you all the best of luck!"

"Thanks," I said as I walked over to the shelf.

After finding a book titled The Many Classes of the World, I sat down and started to read. The others leaned over me and read too. An hour later, I finished the book. By this time, I decided what class I wanted to become.

"I have decided to stay an adventurer. That way, I can be a jack of all trades and help you guys out if you need it," I told the others.

"Are you sure, Hana? You have so many other options. Though I'm sure whatever you choose will help us. We may be archwizards, but our party is extremely unbalanced. I'm glad you weren't considered an archwizard too," Yuri replied, making me feel better about not being an archwizard.

"Why don't we try a quest? It will probably help us understand more about how this world works," Touwa said professionally, pushing up her glasses.

We nodded, agreeing with her logic.

We walked over to the noticeboard and started looking at the many different quests. Some of them sounded extremely dangerous like, "Defeat the dragons in Kaishi Cave." Others sounded a lot more tame like, "Gather Purple Blossoms in Kaishi Meadow."

"How about this quest?" Mari asked from the opposite end of the noticeboard.

We all gathered around to read the quest. It said, "Defeat the Evil King's General in Noroi Town."

"That sounds fun!" Akino exclaimed, jumping up and down.

"It would be a good test of our abilities. Plus, the reward is a lot higher than the others," Touwa announced, sounding like a secretary.

Everyone else nodded in agreement. I could tell Shitai was ready to kill someone since she was almost drooling at the idea. I guess I was the only one that thought this was a bad idea. Because of this, I didn't say anything. Mari took the quest paper over to the original registration lady, who had recovered from fainting.

"We'd like to take on this quest!"

The registration lady took the paper and read it. As soon as she did, she paled.

"A-are you sure? N-nobody has been able to defeat that general yet. P-plus, the town is cursed because of their presence there."

"Really?! This is starting to get interesting! Where exactly is Noroi Town?"

Before the lady could respond, she fainted again.

"Geez. Today is not her day, is it?
