The Prophecy

Luxa let go of Gregor and motioned him to follow her. Howard intervened. He first looked at Gregor holding hands with Luxa with a disapproving expression; Then got down to the point. "The only copy is held by Nerissa. She will keep it safe. It is the only copy in the Underland."

Luxa and Howard led Gregor to a meeting room. The only people in there were Vikus and Nerissa. "He has lost his voice," Luxa said, and Gregor assumed she was reffering to Vikus. As they took seats around the table, Gregor noticed something. The only light came from one torch in the middle of the room. Why had he observed that?

Nerissa recited the prophecy.

The Prophecy of Night

Beware Underlanders; your foe is here

The friend of an enemy, the one that you feared

When the warrior returns, he must go on a quest

For the killer of killers lies due west

The Queen and the Warrior, of those two they must go

A quest for the city, not many can say no

By sea, by air, by foot, and by death

One of the questers shall draw their last breath

Black armor, black legs, and a black head

Forty feet long and we all thought it was dead

The Night awakens, to kill once more

It must be stopped, or all will see much gore

Gregor knew that they had discussed the prophecy before. Vikus made a gesture at him that he assumed to mean, "Why don't you give us your opinion?" Gregor thought for a bit.

"Beware Underlanders; your foe is here"

"The friend of an enemy, the one that you feared."

This first stanza seems pretty straightforward. We have a new enemy." Gregor stated in a neutral tone. "The second stanza, maybe the rats are the ones that we feared?"

Luxa chimed in. "That seems right. But we still don't know who the new enemy is. The Rats and Humans are doing fine."

"When the warrior returns, he must go on a quest

For the killer of killers lies due west." Gregor groaned. "I have to go on a quest to find the Killer of Killers. Wouldn't that mean Killer of Humans?"

"Yes," Howard replied.

The prophecy was getting better and better by the minute.

"The Queen and the Warrior, of those two they must go

A quest for the city, not many can say no

By sea, by air, by foot, and by death

One of the questers shall draw their last breath," Nerissa recited.

"Great." Gregor thought. "Now one of us will die?"

Hazard chimed in. "The next part. Seems pretty straightforward. Sea, air foot, and death."

This was getting more cheerful by the second.

"Black armor, black legs, and a black head

Forty feet long and we all thought it was dead

The Night awakens, to kill once more

It must be stopped, or all will see much gore." Nerissa recited the last stanza.

"A forty-foot monster that came back from the dead?" Hazard said.

"I don't think it means "Came back from the dead," " Luxa replied. "We thought it was dead. That probably means it went missing for a long time. And the Night. Vikus and I have read about that. It was a massive monster in Sandwich's time. Nobody actually saw it, but. All the parties sent out to kill it never returned."

Gregor sighed. He really hated these Prophecies.
