Chapter 7: Lights Off After Six

"According to the Switch Fright, this should be the place," Riba said, looking up from the Switch Fright and up into a spacious room. Electronic beeping and whirrs sounded from the control panel, keeping the entire facility alive and running. Strangely enough... the room was completely empty.

"What? E. Gadd said there were Koopas guarding the room." Riba looked around, his anxiety piquing. What if something jumped out at them? However... there was nothing there.

Riba saw a yellow panel with a question mark on it. Above it, was a piece of tape labeled "POWER". It was just lying out in the open. No case. No protection. No password. It was almost too easy. Riba expected something to happen when he pressed it. He was hesitant to do anything. But then... Len ran forward and pressed it.

"Len!" Riba scolded. Len turned around, gasping. Hurt in her eyes. Riba stumbled back. He must have really screwed up in order to make Len sad. She never showed emotion. Had he really risen his voice that much?

The power cut out across the whole plant. The beeping and whirring that once covered the room ceased. And Riba was left in complete darkness, the image of Len looking at him with those deep heterochromatic eyes was still burned into his vision.

Then, a red light flashed across the room, as alarms blared loudly. They must have had an external power source for the alarm. "Ah!" Riba shouted. Riba heard a strange shifting sound from not far off. Then, he saw... a green Koopa shell headed straight for him! He instinctively kicked it away, and it knocked into another shell. The two bounced off each other. But more followed suit.

Soon, the room was full of them. They were spinning around and ricocheting off walls at incredible speeds. Some even flashed every color of the rainbow as they swung back and forth. Riba tried jumping over them in the brief instances that light shone on them. He couldn't see Len. He could hardly see anything. Soon, there were blue, spiky ones swarming around above him, so jumping wouldn't do him too well.

Not long after, the Blue Spiny Shells were smashing down onto the ground and creating blue explosions, sending other shells flying up. He hadn't seen any traces of Len, so maybe she had gone ahead without him. Riba could only think to run. So run he did. He hopped off many shells, stopping them dead in their tracks. He made it out of the room, and then jumped out of a window.

He then realized what he just did. He had jumped out a window. Probably to his death. He screamed as he fell. But then, he saw Len's giant void hands beneath him. They tore a hole in the space beneath him, which opened up to the entrance of the plant. Riba fell in, and it felt like gravity was flipped on its side. He shot out the other end of the portal and fell face first into the dirt. Len, E. Gadd, Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold locked their gaze onto him as he came to a stop.

He looked up from the dirt, and wiped his face off. "Len?" Riba asked. Len looked down upon him. But then, to Riba's surprise, grabbed a hold of him and lifted him up onto his feet effortlessly. "Uhh... thanks for the save."

"No problem," Len replied.

"Say, where did all the Toads go?" Riba asked. He looked around, not seeing any Toads but Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold. (He assumed the blue one was Bucken-Berry, with the yellow one being Ala-Gold.)

"Hmm... home, I guess," Len answered. "They just up and left a bit after the plant shut down. Maybe under orders from their leader? In any case, the house should be open now that the fortifications are gone. Let's go there."

"Yeah..." Riba replied.
