Chapter 27: Love

When the white faded, it was now many years later. They were in a room. "Riba, why would you do this?" Marchionne cried. "I thought you were my friend. So why?"

"You have committed crimes against the town and our lord," Riba replied. "For that, your execution awaits you. Tasmanian, Citrus, take him to the dungeon."

Two large, suited gruff men came by and picked up Marchionne by the arms. "No, what are you doing? As your clergyman, I demand you to stop! No!" Marchionne whined. Riba smiled, and turned to Alice and Lucas.

"I'd say that was a job well done," Riba told them. "Good work, you two. Soon, this town will reach its highest potential with me in charge. Now, go home. You two deserve rest."

Lucas and Alice walked out of the building. Lucas sat down and leaned his head against the wall. Alice stopped walking. "What are you waiting for?" She asked, taking a seat next to him.

Lucas gestured up towards the window. Which Riba stood looking out of. "I'm waiting for Riba. We're supposed to go to the apple tree in district 2 together," Lucas stated.

"Do you... love Riba?" She asked.

"What?!" Lucas shouted, in fright. He soon quieted himself. "What gave you that idea?" He asked, huddling himself.

Being gay was a grave sin in Evangeline, as was nearly everything. If they caught you, they would hang you and send your body off in a river to cleanse such a "horrid sin" which would, in their eyes, hopefully let you into Heaven.

"Well, you always stare at him when he's talking. You always get happy when he's around," Alice said. "Don't try to hide it."

"If I say this, you need to promise to tell nobody. Especially not Riba," Lucas whispered, nervously. "Promise?" He reached out his hand, and Alice shook it. "I'm so in love with Riba. The way he acts, the way he looks, the way he is. I can't name a single thing about him that I don't love to death."

"Well, there's an easy solution to that," Alice replied.

"Yeah, I know I should confess my feelings," Lucas sighed, his body sliding down the wall until he was lying down on the grass.

"What? No," Alice replied.

"Huh? What do I do then?" Lucas asked.

"Well, you kill yourself," Alice said, grinning. Lucas choked.

"W-what?" Lucas asked. "But why?"

"Well obviously you carry a sin," Alice explained. "The only way to get rid of it is to die. Don't tell Riba. Or anyone else. They'd order for your death instantly. They'd make it painful, horrible... the best way out of this is to kill yourself. I'm honestly surprised you didn't do it sooner."

"I... suppose you're right," Lucas sighed. "Thank you, Alice. May the lord be with you."

"You're welcome," Alice chuckled. As he left, she muttered one thing to herself. "Finally, Riba is all mine."

Lucas ran to his house, got a rope, and tied it into a noose attached to one of the boards on the ceiling. But he decided... no... he didn't deserve to be found. If he was found, they'd cleanse his sins and send him to Heaven. He deserved Hell. So he got another noose, and ran far away.

He ran into the night until he found a foggy forest. He attached the noose to a tree, and held it close to his head. "Riba... I love you..." He whimpered, tears running down his face. Then, he jumped off the stool.

SNAP went his neck. It twisted in an unnatural direction. It was quick and painless... and as he had expected, nobody ever found him.

The Memory Fragment ended.

Riba was left in the remains of Lucas' house, trembling. The warm presence was gone. "Oh? What's this?" Riba asked. Under the fragment, there was a note of some kind.

It read... "I still love you."
