Chapter 6 The Rift

We walked until we hit the shore of the lake with boats sat on the shore with lanterns hanging from shepherds like staff combined to the front of the boat. Kay Blu and I climbed into one of the many boats and it started to drift toward a castle a beautiful castle with spires reaching up into the sky and illuminating the entire surrounding grounds with what looked like candle light through the arched windows. It was incredible. We drifted along with what looked like hundreds of other boats into a small alcove beneath vines that covered the entrance. We stopped ashore and Professor Mercury stepped out of his own boat that had been painted with various animals a lantern that glowed with a luminescent worm in it's bulb. "Alright kiddos I'm going to lead you through the castle to the main hall right follow me and don't wonder off" He stated with a stern voice at the end of the statement. He then turned and started walking up the stairs and throughout numerous hall ways filled with paintings that were gawking and staring at me. As we walked around the corner a chandelier started falling till Prof Mercury simple put his wand up and flicked it around sending the chandelier back to the fixture it came "Peeves how many times have I said it you're being to predictable kiddo" He said to virtually no one until a wispy man walked through a door "Damn it really?" The quite ridiculous man seemed to say. I must have been staring like hell because I heard Blu say to me "Yeah Hogwarts has a lot of ghosts this must be Peeves my parents said he was the tricky one" she said walking on as I joined her we eventually made it in front of two huge golden doors. "Right, this is the main hall where you will all be sorted into houses, now I'm going to depart and when the door opens I will be magically behind it" He said amazingly proud of his dad joke "Now when you come through I will call your name and you will step forward and be sorted good luck kiddos" He said with a wink disappearing behind a door "Somethings not right with him" Kay said behind me "I'm glad you noticed it to" I chimed in " His right sleeve seemed to cover up something he doesn't want people to know about" Said Blu nodding to what we had said "I think we should be put into the same house" Kay stated as he began to pace around the small alcove I mean we are all pretty similar but I mean what if we don't" He began to go off on a tangent that started to get him worried that he'd loose his closets friends "Hey" I started hugging him "Even if we do get put into different houses we'll be alright we can still see each other we can hangout around the library if they have one here, you book worm" He chuckled and sensing I had done my job I pulled away Blu giving me a little nudge and a wink. We talked about the type of lessons that we would have before we heard a rumble and the doors parted revealing Professor Mercury "Right this way he said leading us up the middle of two tables with another two flanking the sides of them. They had so many people on them it was insane. I began to breath faster and feel my chest tighten till I felt Kay's hand squeezing mine . He always managed to calm me down. We stopped just before an old raggedy old stool with what looked like a potato sack sat on top till it raised up and started singing. What. The. Fuck.

"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,

But don't judge on what you see,

I'll eat myself if you can find

A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your black,

Your sleek and tall,

For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat

And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head

The Sorting Hat can't see,

So try me on and I will tell you

Where you ought to be.

You might belong in ,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve, and chivalry

Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in ,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,

if you've a ready mind,

Where those of wit and learning,

Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin,

You'll make your real friends,

Those cunning folks use any means

To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!

And don't get in a flap!

You're in safe hands (though I have none)

For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

It was met by applause form all of the other students and the teachers that were sat on a large grand table just at the top of the hall with teachers lined sitting down at the table. "Righty-oh let's get started. Marrion Avermouth." A small fragile girl walked up and sat on the stool with Professor Mercury placing  the hat on the girl. It seemed seconds before the Hat shouted "Hufflepuff!" This was met by an eruption of noise from a table with a yellow banner with what looked like a badger in the middle of the flag. This went on for a while till I heard "Ansel Moonfoot". I breathed and felt a firm squeeze coming from Kay's hand, I walked up to the stool and felt a weight placed upon my head and then out of no where I heard a voice "So you don't feel comfortable in your own skin yet it shows how brave you are that you're still here and your so modest that it's insane only one house for you, Gryffindor!" I stood up, legs shaking, to a tremendous wave of noise from the gold and scarlet being embraced by random strangers. I looked over and saw Kay he seemed happy but it was a false happiness. His smile was there but it was deflated and his eyes were empty no longer that spark. "Kay Morgause please" Kay stepped up and sat on the stool and the hat was placed on his lovely hair with that one strand still over his scar then I heard  it, everyone did. "Slytherin!"
