Prove you wrong

We had been driving in his car for a little while in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable at least it wasn't for me. I just couldn't fight the feeling that I needed to say something to break the silence, but knowing me after I spoke it would get awkward. Oh well here goes nothing.

"So how do you and Brian know each other?"

"We hang out in some of the same circles."

"So you're a degenerate?"

He gave a snort of laughter and looked over at me. I wouldn't be able to go on breathing if he kept looking at me in that smoldering green eyed gaze.

"Eyes on the road you can die on your own time."

He shook his head but turned his eyes back to the road.

"What qualifies me to be a degenerate?"

"Well if you're anything like my step-brother that would generally be lazing about, boozing, having your way with women, and being an ass."

"That use to be me, I'm changing for the better though."

"Guess what."

"What?"

"You were pretty much all those things at the party last night."

He didn't say anything, although I saw his hands visibly clench on the steering wheel. And cue the awkward silence. I have a habit of pointing out things people don't want to be noticed, maybe that's why my only friend was Elle. She knew I wasn't being mean or catty it was just the way I was. It was a while before we reached our destination I was really surprised as to where we were going. We pulled to a stop in front of wrought iron gates, he rolled down his window and entered a code into the metal box. The gates began to slowly swing open, and the car began moving again.

His dads house was ridiculous it was never this big before. I remember summers here when I was little my mom and his mom were good friends. I spent many a summer in the garden labyrinth getting lost in there, only to have his and my mom come find me. With my knees drawn to my chest they would find me crying against the hedges. My mom would scold me for running off in the first place, but his mom would hold out her hand and sing for me. "If you're lost you can look and you will find me time after time." It wasn't particularly good but it cheered me up. I would grab her outstretched hand and my moms leg and squeeze, until my mom picked me up rubbing my back to soothe me. They would walk easily out of the maze like they knew like the back of there hands. Lost in my thoughts I never noticed he'd gotten out from the car until my door was being opened. I unclasped my seat-belt and took hold of his outstretched hand. He led me up the driveway and around the side of the house before we reached the back he suddenly stopped.

"Close your eyes" he said looking down at me.

"Are you about to murder me because people know I left the house" I said leaning away from him.

"Just close your eyes Victoria" he said exasperatedly running a hand through his shaggy locks of brown hair.

I bit my lip at his action and did as I was told, how one little act could send my heart lurching was beyond me. We had started to move again, he had dropped my hand and moved his to wrap around my waist. I instinctively moved closer holding onto him for support my body betraying me by snuggling into his side. It wasn't long before we reached our destination.

"We're here you can open your eyes." he said with his hands on my shoulders.

I let out a small gasp and my hand flew to my mouth. It was beautiful his father may have expanded on the house but he left the garden alone only adding a gazebo to it. All the different colors and flowers had me wanting to reach out and touch them like a kid in a toy store.

"Why'd you bring me here?" I asked staring up expectantly at him.

"I thought you would like it." he said scratching the back of his head.

I left his side and walked down the path toward some pink hydrangeas, the were gorgeous and full of life. Walking further down the path I saw orchids and lilies. I turned around to see him staring down at me I smiled up at him and continued my exploration of the flowers. I stopped to the right of me was the labyrinth I always got lost in. I looked back once more and saw that Adam had started following me. He gave me this look that said don't do it, but I did anyways. I ran off into the maze ignoring the sound of Adam yelling my name. It all looked the same just like it did when I was younger but it I wasn't scared of getting lost anymore I was going to find my way to the center of this thing even if it took me all day.

"Victoria." I heard Adam shout.

He could call my name all he wanted but I wasn't going to go back. I kept moving after a short pause to catch my breath and because I came to a dead end. I also realized that I wasn't that far from the entrance and he could find me easily, I mean he probably had the layout memorized or something. That would be giving him to much credit though.

When I saw the way her eyes lit up at the garden I knew I had done well. She walked down the path running her fingers over petals and stopping to smell flowers. She looked beautiful and angelic from the way the sun was shining on her. I stuffed my hands inside my pocket and continued to stare, looking at her made me feel at peace for some reason. She turned toward me and gave me a smile. I started making my way over to her, as she started moving again I could see her making her way toward the entrance of the labyrinth. I sent out a silent plead to the universe for her not to go in. She stopped directly in front of the entrance, we locked eyes before she took off into the maze.

"Victoria." I shouted running over to the spot where she previously stood.

I ran my fingers through my hair debating on whether I should go in or not. I hadn't been in here since my mothers funeral. I sighed and walked in, when my mother died my father wanted to tear it down along with the garden. I fought with him constantly to keep it until he finally gave up and told me to keep the dam thing. I couldn't understand why he would want to get rid of a memory of the wife he was supposed to love unconditionally. This was my moms favorite place it was built before I was born. I can remember she and I getting lost in here all the time. It was something I hated I use to ask her why she would come in here if she was just going to get lost. She would run her fingers through my hair and squat to my level. "Sometimes you have to get lost to find yourself. Now no more talking." she would say kissing my forehead and grab my hand to continue our walk. I had know idea what she was talking about until I got older. I smiled to myself as I continued on in the maze this reminded me of my mother even if I never came in here. I knew this place like back of my hand, it was committed to memory thanks to my mom. I easily found my way to the center where I saw her sitting on one of the stone benches. Her eyes were closed head tilted up toward the sun soaking up its ray. She had this peaceful serene look on her face that I wish I could have captured. I knew we were supposed to be building a friendship but right in this moment I wanted to kiss her, run m fingers through her hair, feel her body pressed against mine. She sighed and stretched hair falling in her face as she looked toward the ground. I walked over and tucked her hair behind her ear. I was met with big brown eyes staring up at me, I let my hand fall gently caressing her cheek and sat down next to her. She took a deep breath and turned her head from me.

"I never knew this was here." she said staring at the water fountain. "Its beautiful... Peaceful."

It was a fairly large fountain made from marble, it was three tier. The very top was of a lady holding a pitcher with water flowing out.

"Honestly I don't come in here." he said running a hand through his hair.

"Why not."

"My father had it made after my mother died."

"Oh."

"Anyway do you want to walk around some more or we could go back to the gazebo, there is food there."

"We can go back to the gazebo. I'm kind of hungry."

"Alright." Standing up I hold out my hand for her to grab.

She gingerly placed her hand in mine and I led us out of the maze and back toward the gazebo. She took a seat in one of the chairs around the table.

"This looks nice." she said staring at the food on the table and then up at me.

"Nice things for a nice girl." I said handing her plate.

When I suddenly asked her to hang out I was freaking out. Most girls expected me to wine and dine them in some fancy restaurant they don't know how to pronounce. I wasn't use to a girl like Victoria. If she was blatantly throwing herself at me I knew how to handle that, but as I looked over at her completely ignoring me piling her plate with Greek salad and shaved beef. I knew that just wasn't going to happen.

"How do you know I'm nice I could secretly be some evil harpie wench luring you in, waiting to trap you. And are you just going to stand there staring at me or are you going to sit down and eat?" she said giving me a pointed look.

"I can't see you trapping anything and I wasn't staring simply admiring beauty." I said flashing her a smile.

"Right well whatever, just sit down already." she said stabbing at her salad viciously and looking anywhere other than me.

It was quiet while we ate and in the middle of all these flowers it was peaceful. The only thing that could be heard was nature and the sound of utensils against plate. I looked up to see her staring at me.

"Is there something on my face?"

She looked down and she looked back up there was a smile on her face. " Ha no your face is fine, I was just wondering if we were going to do something else after this?"

She stared at me waiting expectantly for my answer, I stood pushed my chair under the table and held my hand out for her to grab. She took it without hesitation and I led us out the gazebo, out of the garden back towards the door. I stared down at her hand in mine or fingers clasped it was easy being around her. To want her to stay by my side forever, but I would be moving toward having a relationship with her too fast. I would have her running towards the hills if I told her something like that now. I pulled out my keys as we neared the front door.

"Where are you taking me?"

"You'll see when you get there?" I said letting us in to my fathers house.

We walked for another five minutes before we reached our destination.

"You have a bowling alley in your house. I'm surprised but I shouldn't be."

"Yeah my father was big on keeping me safe, I didn't go out people came to me. Come let me school you in this game.

Two rounds later I was winning with two hundred and thirty points and she was hardly close to a hundred points. I didn't think it was possible to be this bad at bowling, it was amusing to see her trying to bowl. Her leg would pop out into the air whenever she released the ball making her look like she was striking a dance pose.

"You're really bad at this." I said as she rolled another gutter-ball

"You have an unfair advantage."

"Unfair advantage or not you are just really bad, but its amusing watching you bowl."

"This is the first time I have ever bowled, so excuse me if I don't have the hang of it."

"Really."

"You said people came to you, you didn't go anywhere. That wasn't my case, I didn't do anything ever. Not like this." she said rolling her bowling ball and looking back at me.

"I'm sorr-"

"It's probably time for me to head back. Can we go?"

"Yeah sure no problem."

The ride back to her house was quiet she stared mostly out the window. I wanted to say something anything to get her to talk to me, but in the end I didn't. I pulled to a stop in front of her house and she opened the door and got out.

"I had a fun time thanks hanging out with me."

"Me to, we should do it again sometime."

"For sure... Well bye."

"Yea see you around."

She closed the door and I watched her walk up the steps she turned and waved before she entered her house. I drove away with a smile on my face. It wasn't how i wanted the evening to end but at least she would consider hanging out with me again.
