Damien's POV ♣️
" His father spent his entire life making a good name and he's just ruining it!" Nina exclaimed angrily.
" How'd you know that he's into shady business?" Kimia questioned.
" He claims he works in a company and whenever I ask him he just avoids answering the question." Nina replied drinking her cocktail.
" He thinks he can buy her over with gifts but she is as stubborn as hell." Marcella chipped in.
" Yeah she has all his gifts locked in a room upstairs." Rhia said.
Interesting.
" Well, we were kind of hoping that one of you would have a child here that can show us around more." Kimia said pouting a little and Nina sighed.
" He's in Havana." She stated rubbing her temples.
" You didn't tell us that!" Olie exclaimed feeling a little offended.
" I know, I'm sorry. He called saying he wanted to meet up with me and I told him that I had guests and that I was leaving Havana soon."
" So what did he say?" Faye asked.
" He said he wanted to meet Amelia and Ian but I told him that I had to ask you first."
" We don't mind. Maybe I'll be able to talk to him about whatever he's into."
" Okay, I'll give you his number but please be careful. He might try to swindle you or worse, he might try to steal Amelia from you."
" Don't worry Nina, I only have eyes for one man." Kimia replied and the ladies cooed.
I smirked at her and she glared back.
" So moving on, how'd you guys meet?"
" Well, Olie and I were roommates in college, and Faye was in one of my classes so we became friends." Marcella started.
" Nina and I were neighbours when I was in highschool and we became friends with Faye when I started dating her brother and then she introduced us to Olie and Marcella."
" Wait wasn't it weird dating your friend's brother?" I asked Rhia.
" No because we never broke up."
" Wait so you're Faye's sister in-law?" Kimia asked clearly amused.
" Yeah." Rhia replied smiling.
" Okay next question. Spouses?"
" I'm divorced." Olie said blankly.
" We were young and stupid. I never really loved him."
" That and the fact that he cheated on you with your cousin." Faye added smiling mischievously.
" Wow, that is so wrong. I'm so sorry about that." Kimia said.
" It's okay, I'm over it. Besides, I got my revenge." Olie said taking a bite out of her choclate mousse.
" The expression on his face was priceless." Nina said laughing.
" What did she do?" I asked curiously.
" She wrecked his favourite and most expensive car then kneed him where the sun doesn't shine." Rhia explained and I winced while Kimia laughed.
Ouch!, That must have been painful.
" I got pregnant as a teenager and the father of my child said he wanted nothing to do with me." Rhia said smiling.
" That was harsh!" Kimia exclaimed.
" Yeah but signing that contract and keeping a copy was one of the best decisions she ever made." Olie said smirking.
" Contact?" I questioned.
" His father was a government official and he didn't want a scandal so he offered me so money if I signed a contract. The contract was basically his family's way of cutting ties with me. So I signed it but I didn't take the money. I raised my baby with the help of my friends and parents."
" Years later when her son made it big in the music industry, he came back wanting to claim custody."
" Turns out his father was involved in some money laundering and they lost everything. That contract prevented him from going after my son and his money. Keeping the baby was the best decision I ever made." Rhia explained smiling.
" Is that why you became a counsellor?" I asked.
" Yes, I wanted to help young girls who are going through the same experience as I did. Having a baby as a teenager is not the end of the world. Sure it was difficult but, it was worth it." She explained and I smiled.
" Marcella?"
" My husband is with my son in South Africa. I'm supposed to be there but then I won the cruise ticket and I just couldn't give it up." She replied.
" Widowed. My husband died a few years ago. He had an heart attack." Nina answered.
" We're so sorry for your loss." Kimia said softly and Nina smiled.
" Same. Niel was my brother's best friend. I had a crush on him for as long as I can remember." Faye said softly.
" You don't have to tell us-"
" It's fine Lia, I want to tell you. When I was in highschool I had thought I had gotten over him. I went through a boyfriend phase.
All of them assholes but I didn't see it. Ryan was my boyfriend at the time and we went to a party that night and Niel was also there. He didn't like Ryan so he followed us there although I told him it wasn't necessary.
Ryan tried to take advantage of me that night and Niel was there to stop him and he was so mad. He kept yelling at me and I yelled back. Then he asked me why I always date guys that were assholes and I said they were the only guys that liked me."
" Faye-"
" He said I was blind, that I couldn't see the guy right in front of me who loves me. He confessed his feelings that night." Faye said tears rolling down her cheeks.
" A part of me was so happy, while the other part was confused. He was my brother's best friend. We kissed that night and that was it. We were in different colleges in different countries. I was in Cuba and he was in America. I dated but nobody ever made me feel the way I did when I was with him." She continued pain obvious in her voice.
" Years later we finally got together but we had wasted so much time being apart. We were so worried about things that didn't even matter!, I was a lawyer and he was a firefighter and he loved his job so much, almost as much as he loved me." She said and laughed bitterly.
" He died in service. He rescued a some people from a burning building. Turns out that the building failed to install carbon monoxide detectors and the level of CO in the building was already high due to the fire. He didn't even notice that something was wrong!, It's an odourless gas. The CO got him before the fire could. The owner of the building knew there were no detectors!, the city's health department knew! And they did nothing. And I sued them for every God damn thing they owned."
" I didn't even know I was pregnant then, he never got to see his kids." Faye whispered then she turned to Kimia and I.
" Don't be like us!,I beg you. Don't care about what others will say. We cared too much even though it didn't matter. We wasted so much time apart. You're in love and that's all that matters!"
Kimia ran out of the room sobbing. Heck a few tears had escaped my eyes, there was no dry eyed person in the room.
" I didn't mean to upset her." Faye said quietly.
" It's okay." I replied wracking my brain for an explanation.
" Uh-, her aunt died in something similar, she was a paramedic. Yeah, she had just gotten married and didn't have any kids yet. Lia's parents had just died and she was just getting used to life without them. Her aunt became her second mother and then she died too. Her uncle hasn't really gotten over her painful death and it brings back memories for Lia."
" I didn't mean to bring back bad memories!" Faye cried.
" It's okay, you didn't know. I'm gonna go calm her down. Good night, we're sorry for ruining your night."
" It alright, you didn't ruin anything, crying is good for the body." Marcella said and I smiled.

" Mia?" I called quietly as I opened the door to our room. I found her on the balcony with her back towards me.
" Why is life so unfair?" She asked.
" I don't know." I replied stepping closer to her and she finally turned to me. Her eyes were red and glossy with tears.
" Faye and Niel deserve to be together!, Why?!, Why is life so unfair?!" She cried.
" Nina's husband didn't deserve to die!, Niel didn't deserve to die!, My father didn't deserve to die!, Why?. Niel died yet the people responsible got to live!, Why couldn't they pay for what they did?!"
" Kimia if that's the way life works we'll all be dead. Someone out there might also be paying for the mistakes you and I made!, You can't stop it. That's just how life is." I said tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
" How do you do it.?" She asked quietly looking up at me.
" Do what?"
" How do you go out there on different missions not knowing what's gonna happen?!, Risking your life each day without a clue of what's coming next!"
" The same way you make plans for the next day without knowing if you'll wake up or not. Our whole life is s big risk Mia, some people's lives are just riskier than others."
" Thank you for what you do. For ridding the world of bad guys. For being a good person." She said then she hugged me and went into the room leaving me on the balcony.
How do I tell her that I'm not as much of a good guy that she thinks I am?
