"People aren't going to be thinking about resisting anymore. They've showed how absolute their power is, we have to succeed or we'll just become another demonstration." Safely back in the apartment, we beckon Tommy to come out (he must have been smaller than I thought as he really did fit in the bottom of the wardrobe).
"What happened?" he asked, eyes blink away the bright light, and picking a stray sock off his shoulder.
"A boy tried to run away and he got shot." Theo explained, eyes peering off into the distance.
"Barely got a couple of metres." I agreed.
"This is some serious crazy shit." She commented with a blank expression.
"They don't fool around. If we're going to do this, we need to do it right." I grabbed her by the shoulder, "Theo! Are you okay?" she still seemed a bit shell shocked, but her eyes suddenly focus and she brushed off my hand.
"I'm fine. Don't worry about me. Worry more about yourself." She glanced at the bruising on my skin, and neither of us spoke for a few moments.
Just as we both go to speak, the door clicks open revealing a box of food on out doorstep. Even though we hadn't touched the two boxes we had from the previous days, extra food was never a bad thing. As Theo reaches for it, an idea strikes me.
"Wait." I hiss suddenly.
"What? I'm just getting our food!" she glares at me.
"Just wait for a minute." I rushed into the back bedroom and searched for a suitable item.
"What are you doing?" she yelled impatiently.
"Boy who cried wolf." I hang the thin comic in the air, and she started nodding slowly in realisation.
"Tommy, we're going to need to borrow Rex for a bit."
"Okay… What for? What's going on?" His eyes dart between us and the comic, trying to fit the pieces together, failing and looking quite lost.
"Rex is going to tell us when the guards are around the corner." The little shadow dog appeared at my side, cowering a little, still slightly afraid of me, then quickly scampered past into the hall.
"Ready?" Theo asked, hands hovering over the box.
"Now!" I signalled, and she snatched back the box. Immediately, the door begins to swing shut, just before it closes, I slip the comic between the door and its frame, jamming it open.
She sat with her eyes closed with the box in her lap. "What is she doing? What's happening?"
"She's counting. Now concentrate on Rex, shout when he sees the guard."
"I can't see-"
"Hear him then." I correct, and he screws his eyes shut in concentration. As the only one left, my heart hammered in its cage, impatiently waiting for it to work.
"He's coming!" Tommy shrieks.
I whipped out the book and it whirls shut.
"Twenty-five seconds." The next moment, Rex walks back through the unopened door, like a ghost.
"What was that about?" Tommy asks, dipping down to stroke Rex.
"The next few days we'll do this, and when the guard comes and the doors shut, they'll start to think that the sensor is faulty, eventually they'll stop coming. Then we can get out."
"When Ezra and I go down in the morning, well count the time it takes to walk down the stairs and take an average. By comparing that with the time it takes for the guard to get here, we can determine how far away they're stationed."
"That's really smart... But how is that going to help us escape?" He admitted.
"knowledge is power." Theo said, purposefully sounding mystical, then smiling at Tommy's blatant confusion.
"We're going to need to know where they are so we can come up with an idea of how to escape. If we escape blind, we're going to get caught. There's a few other things we're going to need Rex's help with."
"okay… What's that?"
"We're going to have him play fetch."
