The Love Potion in Potions

Melody stared at herself in the mirror.

Tom seemed like a helpless case. His love for the Dark Arts was getting too much. And so was his manipulation.

'I only have three years, either I do it within this time, or ...'

Melody missed her mum. She'd have known what to do. Her friends were just as clueless as her.

Melody didn't know how long she stayed there for, until she turned on the tap to wash her hands. As she reached for the tap, she saw some serpent engraving. Huh?

After she finished washing her hands, she examined the serpent closely. Odd...

Hang on...

What time was it?

Melody cast a Tempus.

"Oh god.." she was ten minutes late for potions. Not a good look for Prefect. She ran to the dungeons.

It took another five minutes to get to class. And by the time she finally opened the door, Slughorn had already finished the lecture portion of his lesson.

"Sorry I'm late! I lost track of time."

Slughorn frowned for a second, then brightened. "It's alright, only ten points from Gryffindor, please make sure to be on time next time. We're brewing love potion antidote, take a seat."

To Melody's confusion, her friend, Cheryl, gave her an Iamsosorry look. As Melody scanned the classroom, she realized why. The only empty seat was beside Tom. Just great, did I mention that the universe 'loves' me?

Melody slumped down beside Tom, read his notes, then got up to fetch the ingredients. Tom cut them, Melody added them in. Unless Tom 'deemed Melody worthy of cutting or in preparing the ingredients,' was when Melody would cut. Ridiculous, yes, but it was only in brewing a potion, and Melody didn't mind not cutting. Then suddenly, while Tom waved his wand to complete the potion, Professor Slughorn clapped once to get everyone's attention.

"Make sure your potions are good. To prove this, we will be testing them!"

"WHAT?!" At least half the room shouted. Because in order to test them, you had to take an actual love potion. Just great, there is no way in heaven Tom's going to try it, and there is no way I will either. Eh, when you think of it, Tom under the influence of a love potion is just as bad...

After Melody and Tom finished their potion, Slughorn came and started placing little phials full of pink liquid on each desk. Melody raised her hand.

"Yes?"

"Um, how do the love potions work? Does the person suddenly 'fall' in love with whatever they see first?"

Slughorn chuckled. "No, only whoever. So looking at a quill or yourself won't work."

Many of them groaned. Turns out Melody wasn't the only one who thought they could outsmart the potion. Melody and Tom just looked at the pink filled phial.

"You take it," Melody blurted out.

"No, I'm good, I think you should test it since I brewed the antidote," Tom said.

"Well, there is no way in the sword of Gryffindor am I gonna drink a potion that'll make me 'fall' in 'love' with you," Melody said stubbornly.

"Well, look at this way, you won't be humiliated since everyone in your house takes everything as a joke—"

"Including you," Melody muttered under her breath. Tom ignored this and continued,"But mine..."

"Alright, silence me first."

"Sorry?"

"Silence me so I don't end up saying something that I will regret," Melody repeated.

Tom took out his wand. "Silencio."

Melody nodded, showing that it was working, then picked up the phial, and drank it whole.

That was when she lost control of everything but her mind.

I took it, now give me the antidote!

Yet no, Tom sat there, taking as long as possible in bottling up their antidote, while Melody spoke with no sound and her 'giggle' (since when did she giggle?) wasn't heard either.

By the time Tom finally gave her the antidote, Melody just stared at it, while her mind was screaming TAKE THE FRIDGING ANTIDOTE!

Yet no matter how much Tom said to just take it (he wasn't really trying to convince her, really, it was like he was encouraging a child to continue jumping on the bed while saying 'don't.'), Melody wouldn't budge.

The other students began to stare as they already finished testing their antidotes five minutes ago. Then Slughorn came over.

Tom looked at Slughorn's puzzled look, which quickly became a shocked on. "Tom, go get the Level 7 antidote in my potions closet, quickly!"

Tom put on his model-student act and rushed to fetch what Slughorn asked for. Once he got back, he gave Slughorn the antidote, who gave the antidote to Melody through magical means. Once she swallowed the whole thing, her eyes lost the glazed look they had and returned to normal. The first thing Melody did was indicate that she couldn't speak.

Right... Tom waved his wand and murmured the counter spell. Once he did so, Melody nodded. "What happened? Why did I take a different antidote?"

Slughorn sauntered back to his desk, picked up his lesson planner, and began flicking through the pages.

"Aha!"

Everyone's eyes were on Slughorn right then.

"Love potions do not work if the person already loves whoever gave them said potion/whoever the potion was keyed to, but in an unusual circumstance in which the intensity of a love potion rises to the maximum, this is caused by a level of high love and/or hatred or level of high hatred and/or love."

"..." Everyone took a moment to take it in. Cheryl Fawley was the first to break the silence.

"That literally makes no sense whatsoever. How can you love and or hate someone? At the same time?"

"I don't know, I've never had such situation.. Miss White, could you explain..?"

Melody thought about it. She didn't know that either. But she had a theory. One that she was not willing to share with the whole class.

"I don't know," she shrugged. The others didn't look very convinced as even Melody herself didn't sound sure or convincing.

"Class is dismissed, homework for today, write one parchment about why you think this happened and two pieces of parchment to those who weren't able to brew the proper antidote."
