Sophia's POV
My mom packs my bag for me, I just know it's my usual book, special pen and lunchbox. It's all I ever need for school because of ya know, the fact that I can't see.
"You can come down for your breakfast, do you need a hand?" Mom asks me just like every morning since I lost my vision.
"I'll be fine, thanks."
I get up, my feet against the cool textured floor. The textures let me know where things are, I know what pattern leads to which area of my room, for the rest of the house there is a tape tine, like at school, for me to follow.
I walk out my door, through the 11 step hallway, and take a right. I follow the line for four more steps and go in through the large double door to the kitchen.
"Hi, kiddo! You good?" My dad is always in a good mood, I don't know why. He has a disabled kid and a hard life. Somehow he always stays positive, I like that about him.
"Yeah, dad, I'm good."
He hands me my plate with my usual buttered brown bread toast. I turn walk five steps to my usual chair I always sit in for breakfast. It's the only seat other than my room that I can get the steps exactly right for. I saw it as a sign to always sit there.
"How's your toast honey?" my mom asks me.
"Good, thanks." I reply and keep eating.
I finish my first piece and dust off my hands. "How would you guys feel if I went to a friend's house?"
My parents shift around and look at each other.
"You've never been out really, this would be a big step," my dad says in thought. My mom steps forward trying to get the right words out.
"It's a big step, but if you want to, we can try it out."
My heart leaps, I'm going to meet Jac's family, and get out of the house. I can't wait.
"Great, I'll tell him at school and make sure he gets your numbers to confirm the details." I'm still freaking out with excitement when I finish breakfast and get up for school.
The drive to the school is about twelve minutes long, according to my parents. I wouldn't know. I usually listen to something to keep my mind active. I can't remember what it's like to stare out a window, completely mindlessly taking in the beautiful landscape.
I arrive at school and get out of the car, grabbing my special cane as I land on the road next to me. I don't know if Jackson is here yet. I walk into the building and go in the general direction of my class and count my steps carefully. I reach the door, feel my way in and followed my senses to my seat. I feel my desk in front of me and put my backpack down carefully next to the leg.
I hear something behing me. A small squeak and a rolling sound. "Jac... what are you doing?"
He rolls back a little and I feel the space behind me open up. "I was trying to scare you, but you clearly have some kind of superpower to hear my chair pull up behind you."
"Oh, definitely. I can hear you from miles away." I giggle and walk towards him until I can feel him in front of me. I feel around for the handles of his chair and lean on them.
"My parents are ok with me going to your house for the first time," I say over his shoulder.
"Great, I can't wait."
We just hang out in my classroom until the bell goes for school to start.
