CHAPTER SIXTEEN

"Woah!" Ronnie exclaimed as Alec's dagger passed by his eyes just a hair-length away. And he swore his life flashed before his eyes.

The monster roared as Alec's dagger lodged in its shoulder blades. Without wasting a moment, the dagger vanished and appeared at Alec's hands once more. He spun it around his hand as he rushed towards the monster.

He jumped up and vanished in the air, leaving the creature confused. It looked around, hitting blindly. Alec appeared on top of it with one of his legs stretched for a kick. But the monster reacted quickly and swatted him away. Alec flew to the other side of the dilapidated room, crushing the old bookshelf, and get stabbed with a piece of its wood.

"Augh!" he grunted as he fell to the floor, embedding the wood deeper into his waist.

"Do you seriously fight like this?" Ronnie asked in irritation. "With no plan whatsoever?" He rushed towards Alec and knelt down in front of him. "How are you still alive with this kind of fight?"

"Well," Alec groaned. "Usually, it's Jet's role to rush,"

Ronnie couldn't help but laugh at him. "No matter what you say you're actually worried about the kid,"

The monster roared once more as a table came flying towards them. But without looking back, the table came flew back to where it came from before it could even hit Ronnie. Alec looked at him shocked; they've been together for years but he hasn't actually fought alongside the man. Ronnie gave a shrugged as he took his phone out of his pocket and dialed the office.

"Here, call for the Medic. I promise it'll be done before they even arrive,"

He left his phone with Alec and stood up. He stretched his hands in front of him and danced on the soles of his feet. He popped his fingers with a smile before letting out a long and intense breath. As the monster rushed towards him, Ronnie made a finger gun and discharged a massive fire from a single tip of his finger.

The creature roared and growled as the fire continued to engulf it. It flayed around, spreading fire in the wooden cabin they were at. Ronnie sucked in a deep breath as he closed his hand. He winced when the cabin started falling down. He quickly ran towards the injured Alec and carried him out of there before it completely toppled over; burying the beast with it.

"Remind me not to get you mad, man," Alec joked with a cough.

Ronnie clicked his tongue at him. "Well, if you actually use that lightning of yours we'll be on par,"

"If only it doesn't give me headaches as well,"

"Ah, well," Ronnie started as he slumped down on the dirty ground. "It's our curse,"

The two of them sat in silence as the medic clean-up team arrived. Alec's wound, despite all the blood, was easily healed by one of the healers. And by the team the clean-up crew had finished bagging the creature, Alec was back on his feet.

"You dropping by the hospital?" Ronnie asked and Alec grunted in response as they walked towards the latter's car. "Cool. I'm coming with. And drop by McDonald's will you? I'm famished,"

With a nod, Alec started the car.

"Jet! Jet! Look!" a little girl at the age of seven exclaimed. "It's a caterpillar!"

Jet laughed as he let the girl pulled him down to her level. "Don't touch it, okay? We don't want to make him cry, right?"

The girl nodded enthusiastically as she watched the caterpillar munched on the leaf it was on with a smile on her face. Jet stared at the little girl beside him. Her midnight black hair swayed with the wind and her leaf-green eyes sparkled. He had no idea why but it felt like it has been years since he'd seen her despite that they live together. With a smile gracing his own lips, he patted the child as he stood up and looked around the garden.

Another kid at the age of seven rushed towards him. He jumped towards him and Jet had to step back to accommodate the sudden weight. The boy looked a lot like Jet. With raven-black hair and piercing green eyes; Jet was like looking at a mini him.

"You can't just keep playing with Mina! Play with me, too!" Liam cried. "You've been busy with school! You promised we'll fix my robot today!"

With a laugh, Jet ruffled his hair. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Let's go do it now, shall we?"

Liam jumped up and down as he watched his older brother picked Mina up and carried her. He raised his hands and asked to be carried as well.

"That's not fair! Pick me up, too! Pick me up!" Liam whined and Jet laughed.

"You have to settle for my back, little guy. I'm not strong enough to carry you one-handed," He knelt down in front of Liam and the little kid jumped on his back. "Hold on tight, okay? Or you'll fall,"

Just as he stood up, Jet heard a scream from the distance. He looked behind him but there was no one. Though, he couldn't shake the thought that it sounded so familiar. He walked towards the trees but stayed inside the fences. He squinted his eyes to see past the shadows of the trees and swore he saw something moved. The shadow seemed to be moving closer and Jet waited. But—only a crow came out of the shadow as if flew towards the sky; cawing as it did.

"What's wrong, Jet?" Mina asked; her head crooked to the side in confusion. "Are we not going back?"

Jet forced the thought to the back of his head and gave the kid in his arms a smile. "We are," he started walking back towards the orphanage building behind the church. "Your birthdays are almost near. Do you want anything?"

"A car!" Liam exclaimed.

"A doll!" Mina answered.

Jet nodded at their requests. "No promises, okay? But I'll try to buy you guys those toys,"

"Yayyy!" the two cheered together. "We love you, Jet!"

-"Wake up, Jet," A voice whispered. "You have to wake up,"-
