Part Nine: Ray?

Ray?

*Two and a half weeks into the outbreak*

"Katana", I whisper for the fifty time since we arrived. "I don't think he's here", Mack says, being the Negative Nancy he is.

"He has to be here, where else could he be", I say to Mack. We both look at each other knowing exactly where he was.

It was already night when we got out of the building we were looking through. We were walking throughout the lone streets when the porch lights illuminated the streets.

"Someone's coming", Mack says grabbing my wrist and pulling me into the small ally in between two houses.

We we're so close. Too close for comfort. Shuffling noises near us made Mack grab my waist and pull me closer.

I could feel his heart beating against my chest. My cheeks were on fire. "Um....I think they're gone now", I say letting go of Mack.

"Huh....oh yeah", he said moving forward. The silence between us made it better to hear anything that went on around us.

We entered a small house in the middle of the town. I recognized the house straight away. It was the only house in town that gave out liquor. It was named the sitting duck, for reasons unknown.

We entered the house quietly making sure not to make it obvious that we were looking for Ray.

"Why hello there little lady", says a guy, whose breath stunck of beer. "We don't want any trouble", I say to him stepping back. His southern accent reminded me of the son of a bitch who took my sister.

I guess Mack must've noticed how uneasy I was so he grabbed my hand pulling us away. We were half way across the tiny house when the guy shouted. "You look a lot like this girl that came here 'bout a week ago".

Mack gave me a look that I knew well. He didn't want me to go do anything stupid, but I guess he didn't know me well enough.

I let go of Mack's firm grip and strolled over to the guy, taking out the only picture I managed to salvage of Amelia.

"Is this her", I ask shoving the picture in his face. "Yeah, that's her", he says laughing. "Where is she", I ask. "She left with this guy 'bout a week ago. Said they were heading to Texas 'somthin 'bout a vaccine. Nobody believed them though", he says.

I look at Mack whose face turns into an apparent smile. "We gotta find Katana", I say placing the small torn and wrinkled picture in my back pocket. "Fast", I say.
