Chapter Eight

The sound of the sliding door closing and the faint beeping of the medical apparatuses installed inside the room was the only thing that made a sound after I enter. I know that I should say something but I don't know what to say.

"I'm just here for a check-up, ok? It's nothing serious." She says as she tries to break the silence with an awkward smile on her face.

Even after that, I can't find the courage to say anything. Her mother watch as her daughter tries to get me to say something. In dismay, she let out a sigh.

"I'll just leave this here," her mother says as she sets the fruits on the table, "I'll be going out for a bit. I'll be talking to the doctor"

Her mother then went out the door afterwards.

"Hey, say something. You're making me sad too."

"I'm sorry about that. I just don't know what to say. Hospitals make me uncomfortable."

"Right? That's what I told my mom, but she just shrugged it off saying that she's not taking chances."

"Chances on what?"

"Remember that time that I ran on the school grounds and that time in the park? Apparently, she knew about that. After I got home that day, we ate and then she took me here. I've been here for three days now and I'm not even allowed to leave my bed. Talk about over the top, right?"

"She's just worried about you, I guess. I mean, why wouldn't she be?"

"Ah! Stop, you're becoming one of them too!"

"What? I'm worried too, you know? Why do you think I'm here in the first place?"

I say in attempt to reason with her but instead she just laughed so hard that she's out of breath.

"Stop, haha, you're taking this too seriously, pfft, hahaha"

She says desperately trying to stop herself from laughing but she fails, laughing harder afterwards. As I watch her, I slowly start to laugh as well as I realize how cheesy my words were and that she was just joking.

Her mother then came in as we were laughing.

"You two seem to be in a better mood than earlier. What happened?"

"It's nothing, actually." Faye answers, "So what did the doctor say?"

"Oh, right, he told me that you should stay here today, just to be safe, but you can already go home tomorrow."

"Thank god, I miss going outside. It sucks that I can't go out today, but I guess I can bear another day."

"Anyway, I'll be leaving now. Are you coming with me, Luke?"

"Oh, yes, ma'am."

"Ok then, anyway, Faye, I'll come back tomorrow morning. Be sure to sleep early."

"Yup, I'll wait for you." She said with a smile on her face.

I then wave at her just before we went outside. We then head for the car and drove home. As we were traveling, her mother talked to me again.

"I think I have to thank you."

"Um, why, ma'am? I don't think I did anything worthy of that."

"No, you being there was enough to make her smile and laugh like that. She's been gloomy ever since I sent her there. So thank you for that."

"Hearing that makes me a bit happy, but I don't think it deserves that. I'm just there because I got worried."

"I know but still, thanks. Anyway, where do you live? I'll drive you there."

I look out the window and notice that it's pretty close to my house.

"I think I can go home from here, ma'am."

She then parks the car and I went out.

"Thanks for taking me there and for giving me a ride home." I tell her as I close the door.

She then smile at me and drove home. I then got home feeling a bit happy knowing that I was able to change her mood, even just for a bit.
