Playing the game to sleep

Bret was half expecting some sort of experience points, but when he met with the beast hall elder back at the entrance at the end of the day, he was simply given a few copper coins.

What the heck? Bret grimaced inwardly, though all he did was basically sleep the whole time.

"Alright then, time to leave."

He selected the logout option from his status menu and before long, his vision darkened and his mind became slightly disoriented and he was back once again in the real world.

"Bret, you finally logged out!" An excited voice immediately greeted him. Sitting in front of him was his friend Jack.

"Ya, I ended up playing for a long time, huh?" He grinned shamelessly and was about to say something when a cold voice interrupted him. "It's not like he had anything else to do!"

A tall and slender woman stood leaning on Jack's door and her eyes were staring daggers at him. "Oh! You are back?" Bret's grin disappeared, after looking at the beautiful girl at his friend's doorstep.

Jack's younger sister Lily was seldom home but whenever she was present, she made it a point to throw some jabs at the infamous friend.

"Yes, I am back for the holidays. A term perhaps that lacks all meaning to you?"

Bret didn't want to deal with her attitude and ignored her snarky comment. Luckily for him, Jack intervened. "So! How was the game? How many times did you breakthrough?"

"What is a breakthrough?" Bret had no idea what he was talking about.

Lily saw that the two nerds had gone back to their alternate reality, so she scoffed and left the room, after banging the door shut loudly. "What's with her?" Bret shook his head helplessly.

These days the women he was around seemed to be kind of temperamental.

Jack chuckled and shrugged his shoulders as he also never understood the dynamic of these two. He had asked his sister several times, but it looked like she simply hated the guy for no reason.

He wasn't even surprised at this response as he knew that Bret tended to bring out this side of women more often than not.

"Hey, by the way, if you did not break through what were you doing the whole day?"

"Again with this term?" Bret explained everything from the beginning. Well, there basically wasn't much to tell as he had slept during the whole day.

"Ba ha ha ha!"

"Ba ha ha ha!"

"Ba ha ha ha!"

"How the hell did you end up making such powerful enemies without even lifting a finger?"

Jack started laughing loudly as soon as he heard the guy's experience. Only this fellow could do something this crazy in just one single gaming session!

"And bro! You know that 5 hours outside is like 10 hours in-game. Ha ha ha! I really can't believe you slept through the opening day of the game."

"Are you going to end up playing this game so that you can sleep more? Ha ha ha! That would be hilarious!"

"Eh? Playing the game to sleep more huh? That actually doesn't sound bad. Ha Ha." Bret gave a creepy smile which made his friend immediately swallow his words.

"Dude! Do not get any ideas! Play it properly man, come on."

"Ok. Ok. Don't start nagging. So tell me, what did you do?" Bret quickly changed the topic.

Cough. Cough. Jack looked a bit awkward. He didn't want to rub it on his friend's face but his day was the exact opposite of what had happened to Bret.

He didn't want to make him feel too salty and give up playing the game altogether, so he simply fudged some details. "Hmmm… I just ended up joining one of the sects, bro. Nothing much.

"They gave me a cultivation technique and I am barely managing to scratch the surface of that skill. Which city are you in again?"

"Maybe we can meet soon and then I can give you free carries and we can play together."

Bret squinted his eyes as he was deeply thinking about something but the next second he broke into a shameless grin. "He He. Qingyan city, good brother."

"Ha ha. Let's go eat first? I am hungry as hell."

"Yup me too." The two of them walked downstairs to the dining hall where the housekeeper served dinner promptly.

Bret didn't wait for him and directly grabbed a big heaping plate with a generous portion of the various items and settled comfortably on the living room couch in front of the big TV.

"What an eyesore!" Lily also walked in to join the two brothers and she scoffed at the sight of the messily sprawled leech. "Why do you put up with him so much brother? Don't you think that he is taking advantage of you?"

Jack, however, did not answer her and simply smiled. This was probably what everyone else thought about the guy too but he knew something others did not.

A long time ago, he had inadvertently pissed off some senior and the fact that he was rich didn't seem to matter to that guy. He brought over a gang of thugs and assaulted him after cornering him after school.

However, despite all their efforts, they hadn't been successful that day and it was all because of Bret. For all his laziness and his general lack of interest, the guy was fiercely loyal.

In fact, if he actually put his brain to good use, he wouldn't be where he was today. Even back then, he had single-handedly taken care of ten thugs about thrice their size using just his wits.

He shook his head, no longer dwelling on the past memory. He walked over and sat beside his friend in an equally unsightly manner, lacking any sort of manners, and smirked at his sister teasingly.

"I am surrounded by idiots." Lily harrumphed and took her plate inside.
