Chapter 13

One left, turn right, turn right again, third door on the left.

I take mental notes as I'm taken to another room and thrown into the floor. This room is different from the previous one. There is nothing in here but chains on the walls to hold god knows what. I get my answer when the man chains one of my arms to the wall. I admit I'm slightly terrified at the predicament I've gotten myself into. I don't know how I'm going to get out of this. As if sensing my thoughts, the man grins at me, his teeth still smeared with the blood from my successful attack.

"Don't even think about it, girlie. There's no way out of this for you." The cruel glint in his eyes makes my heart rate pick up, I can feel the pounding in my chest, and I must look like a scared little rabbit in his big bad wolf eyes.

It's all I can do to not throw up when his hand lazily makes its way up my side. I cringe and pull away, but it just seems to fuel him on. Just as he roughly grabs my hair to pull me towards him the door slams open.

"Samuel. We don't have time for this. There's a breach on the South wall and Mason took four people on his run so we are shorthanded." The man that stormed in was one I had not seen before.

Samuel, the psychopath, tossed me to the side once again before heading out the door with the other man. I begin to cry, thankful for the interruption because I have a pretty good idea as to what his plan for me was. My breaths are raspy, and I try to be silent even though I am past the point of panicking now. The metal cuff on my wrist is just tight enough for my hand to not slide out. I can probably get out with enough force on my side. I yank my arm away from the chains as hard as I can, and the sharp pain makes my eyes water more.

God, what is with these freaks and chains?

I bunch up the bottom of my shirt and stuff it in my mouth to bite down on. Before I try again a thought hits me.

What if the door is locked? They will do so much worse if they see I tried to getaway.

My only choice is to try and hope that in their haste to handle their breach that they left the door unsecured.

Biting down as hard as I can I throw my body backward, yanking my arm as hard as I can. A sickening crack reverberates around the room as my body falls to the floor. I cradle my limp wrist to my chest and scream through the shirt in my mouth. The white-hot pain radiates from my now broken wrist. I shakily stand up and move towards the door. This may be my only chance to get out. I must find Mikayla.

I'm almost there. Just one more right turn and a couple of feet down the hall. Right as I am about to round the last corner, I hear voices and footsteps heading my way. I panic and slip into the door closest to me, which was thankfully unlocked. I shut the door as quietly as possible and slid down it slowly, my eyes shut and heart pounding. You would think that being so scared all the time I would be used to it.

The footsteps and voices get closer and I hold my breath until they pass, which isn't hard to do because this room is filled with the pungent smell of rotting flesh. Once they are out of earshot, I let my breathing return to normal and open my eyes. This room is very small and dim and there is what I think is a trash chute on one wall.

That could be our ticket out. I just must get Mikayla and make it back here.

Nodding to myself I quietly slip back into the hallway, making a mental note of which door it is. When I reach the door of the room that they had us in, I look through the slit at the bottom to see if there is anyone standing guard. Seeing no shadows, I try the handle.

Yes! They left it unlocked too. Probably because she is chained up.

I smile to myself at my luck thus far and step into the room, shutting the door behind me. Mikayla is unconscious on the floor. It looks like she must have cried herself to sleep. I walk over quietly and whisper to her, trying to keep from scaring her. Her eyes shoot open and she looks at me, ready to scream before recognition passes through her eyes. Her voice is ragged, probably from screaming, when she speaks to me.

"You came back for me..."

I smile widely at her and pull her into a hug, the chains binding her rattling from the sudden movement.

"Of course I did. I told you, neither of us is going to be alone anymore."

She returns my hug with desperation before letting go and looking at the chains.

"How are we supposed to get these off?"

Darn. I hadn't thought that far ahead yet.

I sigh in frustration. Closing my eyes so I can think. Suddenly I have an idea. I turn to Mikayla, putting my hands on her shoulders.

"I will be back. I promise." I stare into her eyes, letting her know that I'm serious.

She nods and I slip back into the hallway and back to the other room to formulate a plan.
