The Base

"What's the base defence been like, " zed asked a soldier who was watching over the streets from a rooftop building.

The soldier had been on watch for a while now so he was a little surprised when he heard another's voice.

Turning around, he saw Zed standing at the entrance of the rooftop, "Oh it's you. Is there something you need from me, sir?"

"No, not really. I just wanted to see how my soldiers were. Is there anything you need?" asked Zed genuinely wanting to help as much as possible.

The soldier thought for a second and then something popped up in his head, "oh, could we possibly receive more water since it's quite hot right now."

Zed looked at the man with a bit of confusion and then chuckled to himself, "sure haha. I'll get that sorted out soon. Anything else?

"No sir, nothing else comes to mind, " the soldier answered.

With this, Zed left the rooftop. He smiled as now he knees that the soldiers working for him didn't have any problem with the roles given to them. This was an important factor in being a good leader. Or at least that's what Zed thought since he had never truly led anyone before.

Zed made his way down the stairs of the building, making sure to occasionally check each floor to see what was happening. Most floors were empty, but others had survivors staying in them.

'Hmm, these survivors need to know how important it is to work, ' Zed thought to himself when he saw the countless survivors simply staying in their rooms.

The best idea would before everyone to work their absolute hardest for the purpose of this base. Aside from this, it would also be a good idea to start training these people since it was still the refining stage. Although a lot of Zeds people could already be considered strong, a lot couldn't. Having strong people in his base would, in turn, make sure his group would survive the upcoming hardships.

Finally, Zed reached the ground floor. When he did he was met with Kagami. The two gave each other a hug and then split up.

"Geez, you've been gone for a while. Anyway, do you like what you've seen so far?" Kagami asked with a big smile seemingly proud of the base progression.

Zed looked around for a second and then back at Kagami, "It's good for now, but it isn't finished just yet. I want you to plan a meeting for the strongest survivors in this base tonight."

"I see. Could you tell me what your plans are?" Kagami asked.

"Yea. Do you remember how you said that you felt stronger after killing the undead? What if it's the same for them? I need everyone to start training and becoming as strong as they possibly can during the next few months. Apart from this, we also need a team to gather resources for the base, " Zed answered seriously.

Kagami could see that his friend was serious about this and so he nodded in understanding, "Ok I'll sort it out for tonight at 7 p.m."

"Oh and please make sure that the soldiers are getting enough water to be comfortable, " Zed finished off right before walking in the opposite direction of Kagami.

The next thing Zed wished to do was to check in on the Frane family. Zed wanted to make sure they were doing well and were able to adjust to their new life. He also wanted to make sure that the family was strong enough to survive on their own.

Zed could see Nicholas Frane working at the weapons cleaning area so he began walking to the tent. When he was only a few meters away, Nicholas saw him.

"Oh Zed, I'm very happy to see you once again my friend. I'd like to thank you for everything you did for my family and to let you know that you have my undying loyalty," Nicholas said with a clear sense of pride.

These words were no joke to Zed. They could mean the difference between life and death during the apocalypse.

"This is good news! Anyway, how are you fitting in?" Zed asked wishing to understand how he felt.

Nicholas quickly responded by putting his arm around Zeds shoulder as good friends would. "Well my family is safe and work here is fair. There is one thing though. That is that I would like to be able to do more for our camp than what I currently am doing."

"Actually, that is one of the reasons I have come to meet with you today. Other than to check up on how you are, I would also like to request that you become a training instructor for this camp." Zed leaned in and continued in a whisper, "with every undead you kill, you become stronger. By that logic, every living being that an undead kills makes it stronger. In other words, I need you to help make my people strong."

Nicholas looked surprised by what Zed has said but still understood and believed everything which Zed had told him. He too had felt a little stronger after killing tens of zombies.

"I understand and I will work hard to fulfil this command. Should we speak further on this now?" asked Nicholas.

Zed let out a small chuckle once seeing how serious the man had become, "hehe, we can speak in detail at a meeting later on tonight. But for now, I would like you to come out with me and a few others so as to get a feeling for fighting the undead."

"Ok, I understand what you mean. I am ready to leave at any moment. I will be waiting at the front gate for when you're ready to leave. Oh, but just one thing, I don't have any weapons on me. Is that a problem?" Nicholas asked not wanting to be a burden.

When he and his family were attacked by the bastards back in that building, he had lost his weapon after being knocked out. He hadn't received a new weapon since only the soldiers carried weapons around.

"No that's not a problem. I can get you a weapon, but I just need to know which type you would be best with. My guess is something like a greatsword," Zed said while pulling a large blade, around 1.8 m in length, out of thin air. He did this with ease.

Nicholas's eyes opened in shock at seeing this. He wasn't surprised that Zed could hold the blade, but instead by how he was able to pull something out of thin air. "What? How did that blade just appear like that?" he questioned, still visibly shocked.

"I'll tell you once we go out with the others," Zed answered. He then gave the greatsword to Nicholas who simply took it and bowed. Although he wasn't of Asian descent, this kind of action still showed great respect and gratefulness.

"Thank you, Zed for this weapon. I will make sure to work hard and put it to good use," was his final sentence before heading off to wait at the gate.

Zed watched the man walk off the gate while he went the opposite direction to go find the five teens. These were the others which would be going out with Zed and Nicholas to fight zombies.

...

Five minutes later and Nicholas could see Zed and five others walking beside him. These five all looked to be around 16 or 17, but still all physique far better than most people in this camp. That was something which Zed would change though. Three of them carried weapons such as swords and spears, while the other two, a pair of twin sisters, carried nothing.

"Open the main gate and only close it once we leave," Zed yelled out to the person guarding it.

The soldier opened the gate after hearing his boss's command and awaited the group to leave.

"Come on! Let's go kill some undead hoards, shall we?" Zed yelled to Nicholas and the others as he passed through the gate and into the dangerous city streets like he wasn't scared of a thing. Or more so like he didn't need to be scared of anything.
