Chapter 4

My mother's elegant voice rang out as she softly read to me the contents of the book.

"Magic, is the manipulation of mana, something only certain people can do. Being a mage is mostly genetic and the average child awakens to their mana at the age of 9. This means that little ela is a genius, with her awakening at just 6 years old, meaning her body is in tune to mana" mother paused as she smiled in pride " children awaken when their mana pool has formed enough to allow for the first phenomenon, which is usually a burst of that child's element, ela's lightning discharge left burn marks all over her room and even destroyed the walls a bit. Depending on the size of the discharge you can make an estimate to the child's talent, but that's more of a theory as it isn't always true and sometimes they just have a large mana pool"

Once again she paused as if to let the information sink in, and I sat there with expectant eyes.

"However the bodies mana pool can continue to grow after the awakening by absorbing mana from the atmosphere, the cap of the mana pool varies from person to person. But having a small mana pool isn't always detrimental, as you can purify your mana in a similar way to absorbing mana, making your attacks stronger. But, the body is unable to absorb or purify mana until it has awakened."

After catching her breath she continued.

"You can tell who will be a mage based on the colour of their eyes. Normal mages born outside of noble households have a dull amber coloured eyes, and will have an affinity to 1 of 4 elements, earth, fire, water and wind. The affinity is determined during their awakening, and on very rare occasions they can have an affinity to 2, but will grow to prefer one or the other, as their stronger affinity will show later. There are 8 noble households, at least for humans, and with this you can immediately determine their household, and element as their eyes will be an unmissable indication. The list goes as such: Kraeken family- blue eyes, water magic. Phonix family- red eyes, fire magic. Sayter family- green eyes, wind magic. Gorogon family - brown eyes, earth magic. Yettï family - pale blue eyes, ice magic. Raijin family - purple eyes lightning magic. Then there are those with no magic, and will have black eyes. While some noble families may share an element with the amber eyed, even the weakest of their household is 2x stronger than the average amber eyes in terms of raw fire power. "

My eyes widened in realisation; I was the cross-breed of 2 noble families, and with 2 elements. A grin, almost as if I had become the peak existence of this world, spread across my face, before all my fantasies got doused in cold water.

"I know what you're thinking Eli, and a mage with 2 noble eye colours have twice the difficulty controlling his or her magic, while also only having three quarters of the raw fire power of a full noble set, at best."

'What the fu*k, that's so unfair!! I don't want this anymore!!!' a scowl immediately displaced the triumphant grin I just had, causing my mother to chuckle slightly.

"Alright little Eli, I must go back to my chores, I'll read sometime later" and with that she picked me up to take me out of the study. She then left me in my room to continue with her tasks. A little while later I calmed down from my previous frustration.

'Hold on a second, this doesn't make sense, how can the body form a mana pool if it can't absorb any atmospheric mana. Unless..... there's already mana in the body that's gathering to form the pool' the thought struck like a lightning bolt, no pun intended.

'What if I can speed up the process?!' this idea spread an almost savage grin across my face, greatly contrasting to its previous cute and round appearance. I just need to figure out how to force my mana to gather, and be able to actually sense it. Also, I'm sure having dual eyes isn't all bad, after all if I can figure out how to use them in harmony with each other, along with the versatility of having 2 elements, then I may be able to negate the draw backs.

'Also let's be honest, it would be rather ridiculous to have such power without at least some draw backs'. With that in mind, I sat down in a lotus position, closed my eyes, and began expanding my senses.
