One Step At A Time

Kennrick stood like a deer in the headlights of the truck as the driver fought frantically with the steering wheel.

The birds that the old man were feeding had flown up into the air because of the sound of the explosion, passing in Luke's direction. Several bystanders had turned in shock to the exploding tire and were now looking on in horror at what was about to happen.

With the driver fighting to regain control of the vehicle, it was clear that it was on a direct collision course for Kennrick.

The only words that were able to escaped Luke's mouth was Nooo ….

In his mind, he wanted the vehicle to stop. He willed the vehicle to stop.

Suddenly a burst of energy pushed out in the form of a circle, originating from Luke's pants pocket. The purple glow emanated again from the gemstone that resided in his pocket. Luke took it out and held it in his hand as it glowed softly.

It took him a second to realize that to his surprise, everything in the area was quiet. He turned his attention away from the stone and to the birds which were now suspended in mid air. The expressions on the bystanders faces were frozen and even the truck, though tilted to one size was also frozen.

This was the opportunity that he needed to save his friend as his friend stood motionless on the pavement.

Luke quickly placed the stone back into his pocket and focused on his current objective. It all begins with the first step, he thought to himself which was reaching his friend.

One step forward turned to two then more in his valiant dash to save his friend and to knock him out of the way.

As he quickened his haste, something within him made him feel like he knew he could make it. As Luke was about to run in front of the truck, his eyes glanced at Melinda from the corner of his eye who was standing on the opposite side of the road.

.....

She was still eating her ice-cream and watching Luke as he made his way towards Kennrick. She followed him with her eyes as someone who was surprised but also amused by what she was seeing.

Then the truck obscured his view from her. Luke quickly grabbed Kennrick and pull him out of the way as they both fell into some nearby bushes.

Suddenly everything returned back to normal and the truck passed at the side of them, crashing into a wall a few feet behind them.

When Luke got up and looked across the road, Melinda was nowhere to be seen.
