Fear & Frustration

I try to force myself to take a step back, get space to breathe, to think. But, as if sensing I'm about to pull away, Aiden circles his arms around me and I'm done. I press into his chest and slide my hands around his neck and pull him down.

He isn't the only Shade. There are other places I could go to learn about the Source. So that's not what keeps Aiden in my head all the time, my eyes always scanning for him, my body waiting for the sense of him nearby.

No. When you boil it all down, the thing that's holding me here is Aiden himself. He's the thing I keep saying no to, when I mean yes.

I almost whimper when he pulls away, his breath coming too fast.

He doesn't let me go. "Kate . . . " His voice has that hushed awe again. Adrenalin rushes through me. "You need to know—"
