The Third Circle

Aiden pins me with that intensity in his eyes that locks me in place.

"You'll follow me into the third circle," he says quietly. "Derek and some others will be there. You'll be initiated. When he asks you what you want, you tell him what you told me. And you do whatever he says, do you understand?"

"Yes," I whisper. "It's just—"

"No, Kate. You can't hesitate. You can't pause. You can't question. Once we're in there you can't talk—to anyone, not even me—unless you're asked a direct question, got it?" But Aiden doesn't wait for me to answer. He plows on, roaming my face, cutting away in the direction Derek left, then coming back to comb over me again. "I can't stress this enough. You have to be silent. And when he asks you a question, you have to be completely honest. And follow any instruction to the letter, the second it's given. Do everything you're told without hesitation."

"What, why? Aiden, what's going on?"
