In the Fiery Furnace

I whip around to grab Aiden, "Stop! You're hurting him!"

"He's hurting himself," Aiden sneers and catches my wrists, and the petty grin on his face drops off like it was never there. His eyes are dead. The tiny muscles in the back of his jaw twitch. When he talks, it's in a low, calm voice, but through his teeth. "The first time we met--that very first day--I told you to be careful. I told you I was dangerous," he hisses. "No more freebies, Beautiful."

Brittany's face flashes in my head: We're back where we started. Aiden taking advantage of a girl. Me trying to stop him. Chase behind me keeping her safe.

Except this time, the other girl is my sister. And this time people will die. Including me.

I lock eyes with Aiden--pure, hot rage painted on every inch of his face, and everything crystallizes for me in that moment.
