Alone Time

We walked down the hall, trotted down a flight of stairs, then filed to a door in the corner of the building where there was a door that Nathanial opened and waved us into. His face was flat as I passed. He wasn't impressed. We were going to end up having words about this later.

"This is one of our interview rooms," he said briskly to my father. "No one can hear what's said from the outside. You can talk safely here. But sir," Nathanial put a hand to my father's chest as he passed, "We will be right outside. We won't let anyone hurt Kate. Not even you."

Chase caught my eye and his gaze vowed the same thing. I rolled my eyes. This was my father! Sometimes Chase got so stinking protective it pissed me off. Did he and Nathanial really think he was a threat to me? And even if he was, hadn't I proved that I had what it took to take care of myself. I glared back at Chase as my father spoke to Nathanial.

"I'm glad to hear it," Dad snarled. "Now get out of our way."
