Volume 1: Epilogue

I swallow hard, but as Chase zips up his jeans, I join Nathanial in combing the room for any last trace of Chase.

There's nothing.

Kate, please. I know it's scary, but you really aren't alone. You'll be fine.

No I won't, but I'm okay with that. And he doesn't need to know it.

Grateful that Chase can't usually hear my thoughts unless I want him to, I follow he and Nathanial out of the room. While Nathanial signs the waiver papers, despites two nurses trying to convince him otherwise, I usher Chase down the hall to the elevator.

Chase's palm in mine, his fingers gripping mine feel good—and yet also like a brand. Fire on my skin.

I'll do whatever it takes, I pray to the Light. Take whatever you want from me. As long as you save them.

I know my face is grim. Chase watches me, but I can't smile right now.
