Mat and Keys shortly departed after trying to make me choke on the icecream. As a parting gift, they bought me one of those Devil's Tears. And here I was, standing infront of a door with the number 666 written on it. Looks like the Devil's home to me.
I used my hand to roam around the door, searching for a lock or anything of that sort that will help me enter my new home. And I found it but I didn't know how to open it. Then my thumb accidentally pressed on the underside of the lock and it immediately opened. Guess, the locks are fingerprint identification.
Who knew that the afterlife was this advanced in technology?.
I walked into a very beautiful yet simple looking apartment and smiled. Finally, I get my own room and I don't have to share. I ran to the bathroom to check it out, then I ran back to the bedroom excitedly. Everything was perfect for a young spinster and her lone life.
Just Perfect.
A sudden thought about Janice flashed through my mind and I wondered if she was now married to Asher?. Maybe they were on their honeymoon at this moment. I missed her to be honest but I brushed it away quickly. She wasn't worth thinking of in my happy moment.
We were world's apart now. She betrayed me and I've moved on. Besides, I'm over Asher as well.
My stomach suddenly rumbled, reminding me that I needed dinner. But I didn't exactly have any money either, also I'm not quite sure if I can use cash here.
Now, I was regretting not asking Mat earlier when I had the chance. But don't blame me, I had been too busy swooning in his chocolatey eyes and therefore I would no choice but have to sleep hungry today.
Suddenly, the door bell rang and I frowned in surprise. Doubts rose in my mind as I wondered who knew me to come visiting. I didn't even invite anyone over either. Still, I headed towards it, opening it slowly and cautiously. A scream wretched from my throat as my eyes widened in shock. There stood a man in an all black outfit on my balcony, I couldn't see his face nor his eyes because it was dark outside and his hair was covering most of his face anyway. Considering that my apartment was still dark because I hadn't yet turned on the lights, at first glance, he looked like a ghost in a suit. I will have to search for tge light switch later on.
But there was something familiar about him. I took a second look at him carefully, trying my best to decipher his identity.
"Flir-flirty Grim Reaper?", I stuttered unceremoniously.
A short, melodious laugh erupted from him.
And I sighed in relief.
"What are you doing here?....you scared me!", I whispered.
"did I?", he asked sarcastically. "Can I come in sweetie?"
I nodded, feeling warm on the inside because of his use of that nickname.
Without knowing it, I had actually missed hearing it.
"I hate that name by the way. You're ruining our reputation you know... Grim Reapers are everything but not flirty", he said disapprovingly.
I laughed at his statement, he actually sounded cute while saying that.
"okay then, I shall call you cutie grim reaper", I replied.
"ewwww....no, even the first one was better",
I couldn't help it as a laugh bubbled out of my lips involuntarily.
"now that you're here, I'm actually glad that you came..maybe now, you can tell me how to order food because I'm starving...", I groaned.
He laughed again, a sexy smirk lining his lips.
Okay, I'll admit he's kinda hot and then cute at the same time. How was he doing that?. How was he already shaking my heart with nothing but a smile and an old black vintage trench coat?. He must be a player.
"okay", he interrupted my thoughts and asked for my AID (Afterlife Identification card) and I willingly handed it over.
"so I'm guessing that you already unlocked your apartment with your fingerprint", I nodded immediately..."that means, your prints are synchronized with your ID. From now on you can only use the AID to order anything and also lock and unlock your apartment", he explained.
That was pretty simple and easy, I'm pretty sure I would have figured that out on my own.
He gave a dimpled smile, almost as if he had been abke to read my thoughts just now.
"not to undermine you.....but it took me 2weeks to figure that out"
I glared at him but didn't say a word.
"any good pizza place you know?, I asked instead.
"yeah Mystical Pizzahouse. MPH has the best pizzas here", he answered and I smiled.
He stayed and ordered the pizza. And then he made some conversation about sports in the afterlife, none of which I knew existed before now.
Apparently there was the Afterlife Champions League (ACL) and Soul Premier League (SPL).
Funny because I kept thinking about the UEFA Champions league and the English Premier League.
"Oh yeah...Mr Flirty...since you complained about the nickname I gave you...how about you telling me your real name now?", I asked out of the blue.
He smiled, showing off his dimples and met my eye for a moment. Yeah, this Grim reaper definitely deserves that nickname. I couldn't see his entire face though because half of it was covered with his bangs. None the less, I could already imagine that he was very hot...if I'm being biased enough to keep staring at his lips.
"My nane is calssified but since you're my sweetie.... I'll tell you. My names Maitri.", he answered shortly, saving me from contuining to think about his beautiful pink lips.
Should I introduce myself again?, I wondered.
"No need to introduce yourself again", he said and I frowned.
"well Maitri the flirt,... you're the first grim reaper I know that is actually chill. Not that I know any other grim reapers", I laughed at myself.
"Okay Nirvana... I'll try and come up with a nasty nickname for you later but for now, duty calls", he said while fixing a black earbud in his ear.
I smiled and gave a little nod.
And just like that, he was gone like a cold night and an occasssional breeze.
....
Morning came and I still didn't want to wake up. However the incessant ringing of my bell got me up. I was ready to throw fists when I opened it only to sigh when I saw Mat. He was in a black comfy sweater and slacks, hair styled back to reveal his glorious forehead...just like yesterday.
How did he find my place?. I wanted to ask but I stopped.
And forced a smile, he let out a dimpled smile as well.
That smile kinda reminded me of someone, but I brushed it off.
Mat looked my adorable puffy face and wanted to laugh, he enjoyed seeing me and since mornings here are afternoons in the other realm, he had some time to kill and a girl to see.
To be fair Mat had never bothered about any of the souls he'd escorted. He couldn't pinpoint why he kept coming back to this one though.
Maybe it was the pity he'd felt for her earlier when she realised that she'd been betrayed by the people she trusted.
Maybe it was her innocence and the need he'd felt to help her move on.
But she was doing pretty well so maybe he didn't need to keep checking in on her.
"Mat?.Are you going to keep standing outside?", I asked and Mat grinned, walking in and taking a seat.
"You can order something... I'll just be back real quick", I said before walking away.
An image of her taking a shower suddenly filled Mat's mind. Now, not only was he a flirty Grim Reaper....he was also a very perverted Grim Reaper!.
He groaned, "the things I'm beginning to want because of her..."
