Fen woke to Dylin's hands gently combing through his sweaty, tangled curls, his head pounding like a blacksmith's hammer and anvil. His mate softly murmured words that he could barely hear, but it was him. His Dylin. Fen moved closer to the warm presence of his true mate, his love, and breathed in his perfect scent, a tear leaking from his eye.
"I thought I had lost you, my Alpha," Fen croaked, his voice rough as tree bark. He heard and smelled another pair settled around their campsite, two powerful Alphas, and he couldn't have been more grateful for the strangers. They had saved him, and had they not rescued Dylin, the world would have lost the only hope it had.
He frowned, feeling uneasy as he instinctively reached for home, the small nub within his mind that lay within the Nightlands. He searched every corner of his consciousness, yet that small portion of his soul was nowhere to be found. He'd lost his gift, his power to finish this quest gone somewhere he could not find.
"Greetings, Mighty One." A deep baritone voice rumbled across the fire, bringing visions of sand and sun with it. The tired Omega cracked open his eyes, looking for its source.
Immediately above him, Dylin's kind smile shone in the flickering fire light, and Fen hesitantly returned the grin, his headache fading as his mate gently rubbed his temples. Turning his head, Fen was greeted by two strong and wise Alphas, one male, one female. The broad shouldered Wolves grinned at him, the male even chuckling a bit as he sat up.
"Never in my days, as long as they have been, had I seen such a sight." The Alpha's golden eyes gleamed as he looked at Fen, teeth flashing in the darkness. His deep brown hair and neatly trimmed beard shone with his care, and the rings in his furred ears sparkled with gold and bronze. "You have quite the gift, small one. We offer our swords and magic for your cause."
"Manners, Renny." The silver haired Wolf next to him gave him a heatless glare, as she turned the silver eyes of a Mage to the small Celestial. "My mate often forgets introductions, Goddess help me." She smiles, and her eyes glow as she removes a hot mug of broth from the fire's warmth. "I am Dae-rí Farvolf, this ignoramus is my husband, Rennon." She smiled, her dark skin glowing softly as she added, "We followed your trail from Pollux."
Fen smiled back at the mated pair, knowing that they were honest with him. He'd known an Alpha like these two, back in the heart of Providence. He had been kind and protective, as true a friend as any, until soldiers of the Guard came in the night and took his soft spoken companion to the Compound. Fennis had never heard nor seen the amber eyed Wolf since that day.
"Call me Fen, Alphas. I'm just a Wolf, like us all." The Omega softly blushed, as Dylin cradled his weak form in his arms, pursing his lips to hide his bashful smile. "I must thank you for rescuing my mate, as I would be lost without him by my side."
Dylin chuckled, pressing his forehead into Fen's hair, as he whispered, "As usual, my love, you have it backwards." Dylin supported his mate, as Fen accepted the broth, sipping on the hot liquid. He winced softly when his Omega gave him a soft squeeze around his middle, murmuring, "Carefully, love, I'm a trifle broken."
Fen's heart constricted, tightening painfully as he realized he could no longer heal his mate's injuries. "Dylin, I, I can't heal you..." Fen sighed, trembling as he pulled at Dylin's shirt to inspect the damage. "I can't feel my power anymore... I..." He let the tears slide down his face as he ran his fingertips over the thick bandages around his mate's ribs, and tried to will away the dark purple bruising along his stomach.
"I'm sorry." His voice cracked, as he scrubbed the tears from his face. "I'm useless as a three legged horse."
"That only makes us rise to the challenge, Fen." Dae-rí seemed to roll the name around in her mouth, as she gave her mate a fond and eager look. Fen could see her willingness to fight and if needed spill blood for their worthy cause. "I always prefer to be out numbered in a battle." The Mage laughed lightly as she looked around the camp site, her silver eyes dancing."All the more reason to fight my best."
"Sometimes, Rí, I swear you have a death wish." Rennon shook his head, pulling his mate's arms around himself as he settled into the curve of her body, sharing a large cloak in the chilled air. "Sleep now, young ones. We leave for the quest at the morning's first light."
Dylin softly kissed Fen's cheek, as he pulled him under their thin blanket, rumbling deep in his chest as Fennis curled into his arms, purring softly like a cat. "I like them," the Omega whispered, kissing Dylin's chest as he held back a yawn, tired once more. He felt at ease with the Alphas near, knowing that they were an essential part of the grand plan of his all knowing mother. She had placed them in his path, just as she had guided Dylin to him, what felt like many moons ago.
"Sleep, my love." Dylin traced faint patterns onto his mate's skin, murmuring into his hair, "I will never believe you are completely useless, Fen. You are so much more than your gifts." He breathed in his warm scent as Dylin comforted his mate over the unsettling loss of his powers. "But, yes, I like them as well."
Fen smiled, even as he fell into a deep slumber, feeling the comfort of his mate's presence. Somehow, the quest will be fulfilled. He knew that the missing piece had been found, now that the Company was complete.
