Chapter Eleven
(Nyxton's POV)
I awoke on a metal exam table in a room that smelt of a mix of different animals, medicine, pain, old blood, antiseptic, and metal. If I concentrated I could even hear the whines of the animals somewhere in this building. Where even was I?
It looked similar to the experimentation room the scientists used. The equipment, the locked cabinets of drugs and medications, and even the table I lay upon were the same. My heart began to quicken. Was it all a mere dream?! Am I still being held within those suffocating walls that I've only ever known for the past ten years?!
I rushed to sit up, expecting the always present restraints to hold me back. Except this time, there were none. I checked my wrists and my chest but came back with nothing. No tight straps, no clanking chains or metal bindings. Just my free limbs. At least this realization calmed my racing heart a bit.
My eyes rose to scan the room I was in. It was quite spacious with light colored hard wood flooring and plain white walls. To my immediate right were metal swinging double doors leading out of this room. A little ways in front of me was the tall white cabinet I was referring to. A small counter was built along the wall to its left with which sat a slightly ajar silver laptop and some papers with a black swivel chair pushed under it.
It was when I turned to my left that I was shocked to find two more chairs perched against the wall, but closer to me, with River occupying one of them. He was sleeping with his head back against the wall and arms crossed. I didn't know what to think.
Let me explain. Right before I passed out from the drugs the sweet smelling blue haired lady gave me, I overheard that Jax asshole say River was my half brother. Even now my mind is blank. I've never heard anything about this; about him!
I got up off the table to stand with my feet touching the cold ground. I was already in my human form from changing back while I was passed out. I had my pants, cuffs, and jewelry on but as always no shirt.
I must of hit the table or made some sort of noise because River jerked awake the moment I took one step his way. That shouldn't of been possible though because I am like the epitome of stealth. I was even trained for ten years.
'Maybe he could sense a persons presence if they got near him?' I wondered as I stopped in my tracks.
He obviously hadn't seen me yet because he unfolded his arms to stretch and rub his hands down his face before finally turning my way. River jumped slightly in surprise. He probably didn't expect to find me awake let alone standing.
"You finally up huh? Gave us all quite a scare I'd say. How ya feeling?" He asked deciding to stand up as well.
I ignored his question and took a few steps very slowly towards him. My eyebrows were drawn together as if I was angry at something but my eyes held a burning curiosity. River didn't have a clue what was happening. He put his hands up and said, "Whoa buddy. I don't wanna fight ya. I just wanted to know how you were doing. Calm down and let's just talk."
I halted when there was a good three feet between us. Then I lent forward some..... and sniffed him. I know I know. It's weird. But I had to confirm my suspicions.
I took in a few whiffs of his scent before stepping way back and staring at him. He smelt human so I can assume my mom had another family I didn't know about. But why? Why did she leave me to start a new family? Did this mean she was alive?!? What was going on?
I had so many questions but I couldn't think of what to say first. This man in front of me is suppose to be my family but all I can think about is the how and why. If he's older than me then mom must of got with my dad as a fling, had me, left me with an asshole after he died, then left to get back with her real family. Right..? But why?
I was brought out of my thoughts when River started to speak. "Why were you sniffing me? Is something the matter?"
'Yes.' I thought as I looked up at him again. 'So much.'
I didn't want to accept it. I wanted to close my eyes, cover my ears, and turn away. To pretend that I didn't find out. But I did. I was scared of knowing and of what this could mean... But I also never had true blood family after mom left and my real dad passed away. The years before my kidnapping were spent with my bastard of a stepfather.
I've never had a brother before, even just a half brother. Like my inner cat, I was curious. Even if I didn't want to accept him or this situation I still needed to find out the answers to my various questions. After all, I didn't need family when I was in that hell hole so why would I need it now?
"You smell like... Her." I finally said after a moment of silence. It was faint but I was positive. My nose never steers me wrong.
River looked shocked I was speaking but curious at what I had said. "Who do I smell like? Who's Her?"
"My mother." I stated then watched for his reaction.
His face showed understanding. He scratched the back of his head as he sat down in the previously occupied chair and said, "Ahh. I guess now is a better time than any to tell you that I'm your older half brother. I actually found out only a couple days ago when you were taken in for surgery after your rescue. We did a blood test as well as checked for any record of you on the Internet or in any files. It was during your surgery that the doc came out to say you needed a transfusion from the amount of blood you'd lost. He said only family would work because human blood might kill you. He was unsure because he has never had someone like you. No offense. But anyways, the results came back a little after that. We found a record of you on a police report as well as a hospital birth certificate. When we saw that your mom was also my mother I knew we were half brothers. We also have the same blood type. Thank god or you wouldn't of made it back then."
So it's true. He really is my half brother? There's even proof to show for it. Fuck.
"I know. I heard before I passed out after that blueberry gave me the drugs." I growled slightly.
He laughed but seemed to take what I said in. "Blueberry, huh? Haha! That's probably the first time I heard you joke after I met you. Kind of suits you. The guys won't believe me when I tell them."
I growled my distaste at his finding humor in this particular moment. "I will not accept a human as my family." I stated coldly.
"Our mother is human though. So is your other older brother, who I was just about to tell you about." River said getting a bit angry now.
"Your mother is human. My mother left me when I was four! She is dead to me." I exclaimed with pure venom dripping from every word. "And unless this other male is like me I will not accept him either."
River had a sympathetic look in his eyes after I said that. I'm pretty sure anyone would but I don't want their fucking sympathy. "That's still not a reason for her to be dead to you. Look, I know you've had it seriously rough but give us, especially our mother, a chance. I'm sure once you get use to us you'll love having us for family. My little brother, your other older brother, is married and has a young son. I'm sure you'd like to meet him. We can discuss about our mother when the time comes. How about that? Just relax for now. I know everything was a bit sudden for you after you just got out of that damn shit hole."
I growled but nodded my head slightly. "I still do not accept you male humans as family."
He smiled slightly and said, "For now."
I just growled and turned away. I was ready to just walk right out of where ever we were. This place was too similar to the scientists place so I was quite uncomfortable here. Leaving would give me great happiness.
Right as I was about to storm out of the room, not caring if River tried to stop me or not, the blue haired lady pushed through the double doors followed by the rest of Rivers team. She looked extremely flabbergasted when she saw me. I'm guessing she didn't see me in my human form till now.
She jumped and squealed in delight, causing me to cover my ears from the high pitched noise. She started to rush over to me when I growled warningly and stepped back. I don't trust anyone. Especially humans. So her rushing at me is not a smart idea. Luckily one of Rivers' buddies stopped her in time.
'I would of killed her.' I thought menacingly.
"I wouldn't do that lass. He'd chew you up and spit you out in not even one second. To him your not even worth swallowing." Leonard explained as he pulled her back from getting too close to me.
She looked back and forth from Leonard then to me and back again. "Why not?"
"Well for one, he detests humans. And two, he has been tortured by people for over ten years. He won't let anyone get close to him. Doctors or vets or anyone like them he loathes the most because they remind him of the scientists that hurt him. So I would take it real real real slow with him miss." Leonard stated so she'd understand.
She just turned to look back at me as I stood beside the metal table tense. I made sure to keep River in my sights as well so he couldn't sneak up on me.
I growled slightly when she kept looking me in the eyes. With females it was completely different. Unless I felt they were very dominant and wanted to fight me, I didn't take them looking me straight in the eye as a challenge. I never liked it either though. After all she was still human.
Her eyes looked pure and innocent. They were similar, in a way, to my deceased daughter....
I looked away, not able to stand seeing them. It hurt too much. Instead I looked at her hair. It reminded me of those little cartoon characters you see on TV. What were they called again?
While I was thinking on it the blue haired lady spoke up. "Oh I see. Well you know what? I don't give a damn if he hates humans, animals, insects, or life! I'm his new animal doctor and he'll get use to me touching alll~ up on him if I very well feel like it and doing whatever the hell I say. And if he doesn't like it then tough nuggets! I won't be a push over just because he has human-phobia. I'm here for him and his fucking health. He will treat me like a person and I'll do the exact same. Got it cat breath!" She huffed sternly as she pointed straight at me.
To be quite honest everyone was floored by that. Even me. No one expected her personality to make a complete 360 degree turn.
I was more amazed that she had the balls to stand up to me when none of these males even tried. What's more is she treats me like a person when no one ever has my whole life. She definitely gained my utmost respect.
There was obviously no way I could show that or let her insult go without a comeback so I growled at her while looking away and crossing my arms over my chest and said, "Stupid smurf."
