CHAPTER 36: They are coming

I swiftly ran through the forest accompanied by the endless tip tapping of my feet. Driven by my hunger I seared for my first prey.

It was a deer that was sleeping and didn't notice me approach. With a great jump I managed to overcome the distance between me and the deer in an instant.

I stretched out my black claws ready to end the creatures life. Then I stopped.

No. I could not kill this creature .

I turned around and walked away. The deer had now woken up and ran as fast as it could. The reason I couldn't kill this creature was because I heard a second heartbeat. It was soft, but definitely there. Despite it nearly being winter, the deer was carrying a young.

I didn't want to kill something that has jet to be born. No matter what way you look at it, its just cruel and wrong. So, I let the deer go and went to find another prey.

It didn't even take five minutes to find another animal. It was a bour.

The animal was exhausted when I found it. I dint know why, but it seemed like it had been running for hours. But for now I didn't care and killed the creature.

When my hunger was satisfied my mind was racing from curiosity. ("I found that bour a little too fast and I can cense a lot of creatures in this area, even tough it is still near a village. This is very unusual.")

I decided to go check what was going on. I ran in the direction the bour had originally come from.

After a while the trail of the bour became harder and harder to follow, but a lot of creatures had decided to flee from that direction so I did no longer have to follow its trail.

After running for a few hours I halted. ("No. no, this can't be true, this can't be happening!")

I stayed still and checked another time. But the situation didn't change. A few kilometres in the distance was another demon. I recognised the pressure it gave of. And although faintly due to the distance I could cense a large group of creatures. Presumably under the control of that demon.

I turned around and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I nearly tripped a few times because I no longer paid attention to my surroundings. Eventually I reached the path we had been walking on to get to the village in the first place. running on the path went a lot faster than running through the thick forest.

After some time I neared the place where the path split up into two. This time I went on the path that led to the monastery. I knew that the village didn't have what it takes to fend of against the group of monsters, let alone the demon.

I knew what holy energy could do to a demon, so I knew that with the items and the knowledge of the people in the monastery our combat power increased drastically.

So, maybe if everyone in the monastery joined forces with the people in the village we could by some time to let other villagers escape.

I neared the entrance of the monastery. I could barely move due to the sheer amount of holy energy, but after gathering all my strength I slammed my fist multiple times on the door to create as much sound as possible.

"Gwen! Are you there? Please anyone I need your help!"

It took a while before I could hear the sound of footsteps. At that moment I had already fallen on one knee, unable to stand under the great pressure of the monastery.

The giant door slowly opened, and there I saw Gwen holding a small lantern.

I looked up to look her in her fear struck eyes. But I didn't have time to calm her down. The demon and it's small army of monsters was heading to the village and every second counted.

I once again gattered all my strength. "They are coming."

She let the lantern fall. And it shattered in a million pieces as her face displayed a look of horrified realisation.
