A few weeks passed and the man had long since gone home as if nothing had happened.
Since the man had corrupted himself to such an extend, no one he lived with noticed any change except that he would no longer commit his former unspeakable acts. But no one besides him knew of those in the first place. and no one realised that he was giving the five broken humans and their new roommate financial support.
The only annoyance I could find was that I was permanently aware of his location. He stood out like a firefly in a starless night and I was sure that I could enter his mind even if I were on the other side of the stone city.
A few times he and the six humans who lived at the mansion informed me about certain rumours that had been going around lately. Apparently, people had left the stone city for secret missions and up till now only one of them returned.
It would be useful to have another set of eyes that I could just order around, but I didn't like him and didn't want anything to do with him unless it was necessary.
At the moment I was trying to win from Allenya, Alex and Elisa in a board game, however I was pretty sure that Alex and Allenya were just changing the rules to their benefit.
I sighed as once again a rule I was sure of that it didn't existed came into the game to the benefit of Allenya. But Alex also let his creativity run wild. At this moment it was merely a battle between who could come up with the most creative rules to ad to the game. Elisa and I didn't stand a chance to those two cheaters.
Somewhere in the distance I could hear the loud clinging of bells. I raised my head to figure out from which direction they came.
It came from the building of the leaders of the stone city.
The others heard it to and looked around with a surprised expression. Gert ran to the windows and flung them open.
This made us see the hundreds of people who tried to get out of their houses as fast as possible. They ran through the streets carrying only a few clothes while heading to the closest exit of the stone city.
Some soldiers desperately tried to keep order, but to no avail.
"S-should we also go?" Elisa quietly asked. Yohan who was staring blankly out of the window slowly nodded. "Yes, we should."
We packed our things as quickly as possible. But as soon as we got outside, I sprung up and flew in the opposite direction everyone was going.
I wanted to know what was going on and if I could help.
While I was flying above the streets, I soon saw what the cause of all this commotion was.
Demons were forcefully making their way in through the man gate. The komainu who were just stone statues before had come to life and were blindly attacking anything that came through. A line of soldier drew their swords, ready to defend the city that they had already lost. Man and woman died trying to give those who fled as much chance as possible.
I let myself fall out of the air to join the defence as quickly as I could. But white strings that burned my skin caught me and I crashed into the ground.
When I looked up, I saw that it was the dwarf that held a string made of the same fur of the divine beast as the net a few weeks ago.
"What were you thinking? You are literally just a child compared to them. both in age and in strength. What do you think happened if they capture you and manage to replicate your mark? Go! Fly away so they can't use you."
He cut the string holding me down lose so that I would be able to fly again.
"Fine, but you're coming with me!"
I grabbed him by the shoulders and took off. It was the first time that I caried a person while flying so it was a little unstable.
The dwarf kicked the air as he could no longer feel the ground under his feet.
"Let me go! I need to help."
I growled as the dwarf kept struggling.
"How much can one man do? If I'm not allowed to help, then so are you. Quit struggling, you are more useful when you are alive."
