Bets and Broken Ribs

<>

"You just have a few broken ribs and a fracture. Other than that, you're all good." Nurse Sophie smiled, writing something on her clipboard and handing the paper to Nicole.

"Can we leave, Nurse Sophie?" I asked.

She smiled. "In a few hours, yes. But first, pay the bills."

I frowned. "Bills again? I told you, nurse, I am managing it. It'll take time."

She shook her head in disbelief. "I suppose I am talking about yours, Charlie. Not your daddy dearest. Also, as you have oh-so kindly reminded me about those bills, make sure you pay them."

I smiled. "you know, even the doctors aren't that bothered about the bills as much as you are. Come on, woman! Relax a little!"

She frowned. "The doctors don't personally tell you this because of me, Charlie. I have been assigned to your daddy dearest. All of the necessary information comes to me -including the fact that you need to pay those bills as quickly as possible because the doctors might stop the chemotherapy for this. I'm sure you do not want that."

I assured her. "I don't, nurse Sophie. Truth is, I don't have much to pay his bills. I'm currently looking for part-time jobs but even the total income will not be able to pay this amount. I'll try and pay in installments, will it be okay?"

She smiled. "As long as you try, it is alright."

She walked out of the door and that was when Nicole turned to me.

"I'm paying this bill." She waved the bill in front of my eyes.

I sighed. "Fine, do it. I'm not in the mood to argue."

She flashed her victory smile and as she jumped down from her chair.

"Good, because if you did argue, I wouldn't have backed down without a fight."

___

"Wanna meet your dad?" Nicole asked as she stared through the glass window on the door.

"Not today, Nic. I need to go home and relax. Besides, dad would freak out if he saw this." I pointed out the sling.

She laughed. "Yeah, and then you would have to explain the whole scenario of-"

"-How stupid I was and how doubly stupid my friend here was who was stuck on a tree."

She smacked my arm - the one inside the sling.

"OW!"

"This is what you get for calling me stupid!" She huffed.

"Doubly stupid." I corrected to which I received a glare.

She grabbed by the sling-free arm and dragged me outside, screaming.

"I'm driving!"

___

"So, how was your day?" I asked her, glancing sideways to see her expression. She was pouting and trying to avoid me by distracting herself from driving.

She gave no reply.

"I really enjoyed the day, now. The swings, the drive, the riding shotgun. It was all fun. You really can make such amazing plans."

She did not utter a word, but the corner of her lips twitched indicating that she was trying to fight a smile.

I continued. "Thank God, you can make amazing plans like this. I'll finally win my $100 from Eric."

"Eric? Why would he give you $100?" She finally asked, taking a right turn.

"Because we had a bet." I shrugged.

"Bet on if I could make amazing plans?" She glanced at me for a mere second.

I smiled. "Nah, bet on how long it took me to get you to talk to me."

She suddenly realized what just happened. I had manipulated her into talking to me.

HA!

She shook her head, trying to hide her smile with annoyance. "You're annoying, you know that?"

"Annoyingly adorable."

Once, we reached my apartment's parking lot, I got out of the car and shot Nicole a quick goodbye before heading home. Finally, I was done with the day and now that I had a broken arm, I had to take care of it.

Once I reached the door to my 'home sweet home', I fished inside my bag to get my keys out. That was when I saw the umbrellas there.

Wow, I guess I should start believing the weatherman, after all.

Smiling to myself, I took out the keys and inserted it into the lock. The lock opened with a click sound and allowed me in.

Once I got in, I froze on spot.

"Hello, Charlotte. We meet again."
