We ran out the back alley trying to find our way back to my car. Luckily we were able to get back out to the street and find my car. We hoped in the car and locked the doors letting out a huge sigh of relief. My heart was thumping, Fallon was on full alert. Why were there hunters on pack lands, how were they not sensed? Almost as if she could hear my thoughts Val turned to me her blue eyes flashing to black and back again.
"Why are they here?" she managed to choke out.
"Did you tell your Dad? Did they get word to the Alpha and warriors?" I said trying to calm myself and think rationally. She nodded once and went to take out her phone answering a call.
"Ash? Oh thank goodness where are you?" ..."Okay." ...."be there in 10." she ended the call and looked at me more calmly. "Ash is close lets go meet up with him before heading to my house."
"Sounds like a plan." I started my car and drove down the street with an eerie feeling that some one was watching me. Fallon was restless knowing something was not right too. I made a sharp quick turn right.
"What the hell Dali? Ash is right up the street." she said annoyed.
"There's someone following us." I said watch the black SUV follow along the next quick turn I made. She slowly looked in the side rear view mirror.
Leaning back into her seat she was being quiet as I took us on turn after turn pushing my old beater to its limits. I had no clue where I was going, any where was better than being here. Soon I realized I had made the wrong choice when we came up to a dead end. I cursed under my breath trying to throw the car into reverse but my old car's gear stick jammed. The screeching of the tires as the SUV came around the final turn was deafening.
I looked over at Val seeing she was so scared her face had gone pale. I couldn't help but feel that same fear that use to cripple me take over triggering my fight or flight response. Fallon was nervous too causing me to want to run from there. But I had to make sure both of us made it to safety.
"My dad says their on their way." her voice was small.
The men in the SUV opened their doors with their guns drawn straight at my car. I decided if they were going hurt one of us it might as well be me. I opened my door causing Val to scream in protest. I closed it telling her to stay in the car in a voice I've never used before. I could feel Fallon heightening my senses but staying clear enough back as to not turn my eyes black.
"Hello fellas, what seems to be the problem here?" I said casually taking small cautious steps towards them.
"Well your driving back there was less than safe." he paused looking over to the other guy with a sly grin. "We wanted to make sure you little ladies made it home." The laugh he let out was evil and venomous.
I didn't let them shake me, I only had to keep them talking until Val's dad and the warriors arrive.
"Well were here, you can go now." I said giving a sarcastic smile waving them off with me hand, trying my best to keep my composure.
"Oh well now that we're here why don't you ladies invite us in." the other guy said taking his gun away from me and pointing it at Val who was turned around watching us in horror.
"I think not. You see you're not our type." I smiled looking at his pride bruise at my insinuation.
"You filthy mutt." he started forward, the smell of silver getting stronger as he approached.
At that moment I let out a loud growl that came from both Fallon and I. They were stunned for a split second, just long enough for me to run at the closest one. I moved so fast he barely saw me coming. I punched him square in his jaw causing him to go flying into a near by building. Hearing the crash the other man's head and gun whipped around to face me.
I looked at him knowing my eyes were fully black. Fallon's power flowing through me, allowing me to see and hear even more than ever before. The man's heart was beating loudly in his chest. I could tell my movements had scared him, to be honest they scared me as well. I let out another growl as I ran toward him.
A loud ring sounded and I continued, ignoring it as I ran toward him. Another sounded and I slowed falling to my knees. The pain was immense it started in my chest and burned its way through me. I let out what sounded like a scream but it felt too distant to be my own. I fell face first into the asphalt not able to move for a moment, the pain taking over my whole body. The last thing I saw before I lost consciousness was the man who shot me being thrown on to the SUV, he crashed into the windshield and laid lifeless.
The darkness took over but I could feel myself being lifted up and hear someone faintly talking to me. Then there was nothing. The silence took me in and soothed all of the burning it was almost peaceful. Then the beeping started. A constant electronic beep over and over again. It was no metronome for my darkness just a nuisance increasingly getting on my nerves.
"Can some one turn that off?" I yelled into the abyss. The only answer was the beep in perfect sync to its usual time.
"Is that what you want?" the familiar voice said to me. I whipped around to face where the voice came from.
"Fallon? Where are we?" I said staring into her big yellow eyes.
"We're in our head, well the part of us where we meet as one." she walked a little closer but stopped at an invisible line between us.
"Why am I here?" I said looking at her confused.
"You have a choice to make. We can walk away here and now together or we can go back and save our people." she said fiercely.
I took a moment not really understanding exactly what she meant. Save our people? That's when it hit me, the memory of Val sitting in the car helpless. The rage and fear built in me. Was she okay? Why were the hunters on our lands? Why did they smell like rouges? I looked at her knowing she could feel my answer, she howled loudly in response.
I slowly opened my eyes, seeing the pale florescent lights above. I could feel the tubes and monitors set up over different parts of my body. The beeping that had been my torment continued but this time as a soft click as the machine read my heart rate. I started to move my hands but stopped when one was enclosed in a tight grip.
Looking down ever so slightly caused my chest to burst with pain spreading all over my body. I let out a grunt before positioning myself in the right place. I saw my hand held tightly by Finn's, they were placed under his head. He was asleep, eyes puffy from what looked like crying. His raven hair covering his face ever so slightly.
I smiled at him, the look of a long needed peaceful sleep on his face. I admired his strong features, my heart starting to beat faster as I realized how handsome he actually is. The monitor speed up causing him to wake up in a panic. He looked frantically around the room, his green eyes locked with mine and he relaxed. Looking a little embarrassed he let go of my hand and straightened up.
"Uh, your awake good." he said in a business tone. Tilting my head I just looked at him confused as to why he would even be here let alone holding my hand.
"How did I get here?" I croaked my voice weak and shaking.
"You were shot... Twice." he looked down starring at his shoes. He then went on to tell me how they had found Val and I.
"I.. Is V... Val okay?" I said my voice still coarse, I could see the pain it caused him to hear me like this.
"She's fine, just a little shaken." her breathed out, some what annoyed it seemed. "Don't ever do that again." he got up bending down to where his face was inches away from mine his lips right above my forehead. "Please." he said so quietly before placing a small gentle kiss on my hair line, my skin felt warmer than it ever had where he kissed me.
Before I could say anything he turned and walked out of the room, taking all of the warmth with him. Fallon whimpered in the back of my mind and for the first time I agreed. I wanted him to come back. To go back to being as peaceful as before. I could feel the start of tears pooling in my eyes.
The nurse rushed in quickly checking me to see if I was bleeding, then to the monitors to check my chart. She worked fast, almost like she didn't want to be in the same room as me. Kind of the same way the driver had acted. She worked fast fluttering around me to make sure everything was okay. As she left she mumbled that the doctor would be in shortly.
My parents came in with the doctor, my mom checking me over crying happy tears seeing I was okay. My dad looked serious and relieved all at the same time.
"Well you gave us a scare there for a while there." the pack doctor said double checking my charts.
"I.. I'm sorry everyone." I rasped causing my fathers resolve to faultier, coming to my side taking my hand and my grabbing my mom around her shoulders with his other hand.
"No need to be sorry, young one. We got you all fixed up. Your body is going to need time to heal, being shot with silver bullets is very dangerous." he said looking solemnly at me. "You were very lucky the young alpha got you here when he did." he finished leaving me in my silent confusion.
Finn was there? My mind suddenly flashed to the man who shot me flying into the SUV.
"Was.. Was anyone else hurt?" I asked in the only voice I could muster.
"Thanks to you and your friends quick thinking both of them have been captured." he smiled lightly before exiting the room.
"Oh honey I was so worried, I'm just so happy you are alright." she sobbed leaning into my dad's shoulder.
"Please love next time you decide to be a distraction keep them talking longer." my dad said joking with me. I could only faintly smile at him.
Even with all of this they seem to be taking it in strides. Val is okay, no one was killed.
"H.. How long a.. am I here for?" I asked trying to rally my strength to sit up.
"No please lay down love." my dad said laying his hand on my shoulder. "They said it might take a week for the silver to be out of your system." he said. I laid back relaxing knowing everyone is okay.
"Well not everyone." Fallon reminded me in a whimper.
"We will be okay Fal, we just need to heal." I said feeling the heaviness of my eye lids. I let my eyes close and a peaceful rest finally take me.
I woke a couple of hours later to the sound of the door opening. Not wanting to hurt myself I just looked around the room. To my relief it was just Val struggling with an over sized bouquet. I laughed, causing her to almost drop it on the floor.
"Oh my goddess Dali, you scared the crap out of me." she placed the vase on the small table and ran over to me.
"I'm just happy your alright." I said sounding stronger than earlier. I wondered how long I had been asleep.
"Me? Are you kidding?" she paused eyeing my face. "Dali you've been asleep for days. They said you woke up briefly only to fall back into the coma." she said shaking.
"How many?" I asked nervously.
"5 to be exact." she looked down at her shoes. "I really am so sorry Dali. I was so helpless, I didn't know what to do." she said sinking into the chair next to my bed.
"You did!" I said confused. " Without you calling for help who knows what would have happened." I said confidently. She kept her eyes trained on her feet trying not to show me just how guilty she felt.
Not trying to push her further I checked my body for any pain, but there was none. I felt fine, besides being a little stiff here and there. I could no longer feel the searing pain of the silver in my body. Fallon jumped around showing me that she was good to go as well.
"Hey Val, would you go get the doctor? I think I'm ready to go home." I said in the weird voice I had before but it sounded a lot lighter. Her face just shot up to meet mine, and with a quick nod she left the room.
I sat up completely, stretching my muscles trying to get them moving again. It felt like I hadn't used them in weeks. I wondered how long I was asleep the first time. Looking around the room I could see various flower vases surrounding the room. I got up, making sure to steady myself before going over to one vase in particular. It had Dahlias in it. They were beautiful, although my mom thought it was funny to change the spelling of my name they were still my favorite flower.
I sniffed them searching to see if there was a card left with them. There wasn't. I looked at all the other vases just to see none of them held cards or well wishes. Maybe mom and dad had them I thought as Val and the doctor returned to the room. I turned to the doctor and smiled.
"I'm ready to go home now." I said in that same strange voice but this one had more power to it. The doctor froze slightly.
"Right away," he said rushing back out of the room.
"Lets go to my place and relax?" I asked her hoping she would come out of what ever guilt she seemed to have.
"Yes, I would love that." she smiled back at me. "but I have to tell you." she stopped to look at me, making sure I was one-hundred percent okay before continuing. "I met my mate.." she looked down. I could tell she hated to tell me something like this after just waking up but couldn't hold it in from her best friend any longer. I smiled bright and took her into a big hug.
"Then a good ol' fashion girls night it is." I said as she finally hugged me back.
