Chapter Five

Tom's POV

I honestly don't know what I should think about Dennis. I mean don't get me wrong, its absolutely astounding what he can do and seeing just how powerful it is from that demonstration at the store, I have almost no doubt he can get us through this apocalypse with flying colors. Tho it's quite obvious he doesn't know how to control it yet, I'll gladly be there to help him and input my opinions if he wants them.

Meeting Dennis was an unexpected and possibly unwanted thing that happened to me but I was happy that I had someone to survive through this thing, however long it may last, with. I was whipped out of my thoughts when the door opened and in walked dennis with the red cans in his hand. He walked to a corner and put the cans there then turned to me with his hands on his hips and sighed.

"So I was thinking" he started, "maybe we could go back towards the forest and train there?" I looked at him with unsure eyes. "It pretty far away from the city tho, and what if we get ambushed by monsters or even other people?" I argued. His brows furrowed in thought, "yeah you're right maybe we should do something closer, ok how about we find some zombies around town to practice on then?" I smiled, happy he took my worry into consideration and agreed, "Yeah that way we can still be out in the open and look out for zombies while never actually leaving the town.

"Correct" he said smiling, "ok let's do it!" I smiled wide, suddenly excited and ready to go watch him in action. He grabbed one of his bags, I'm guessing it contained ammunition for if we need it. I grabbed the same, taking my pistol with me. After getting a few more items like the flashlight, we head out of the house and start walking around looking for zombies.

The first few mintues of walking and turning corners we didnt see anything but decomposing bodies, although I was able to finally get a good look at this town. Most of the buildings looked fine but for some reason a few weren't intact. Like pieces of them were scattered across the road or etc. Could there have been a mutation that made the zombies way more powerful then their puny counterparts?

I hope not, holy shit. "Hey look" Dennis shook me out of my thoughts with a whisper, his blade finger point towards a zombie. "I'm gonna take it out, it looks like two more stumbled around the corners, these things are dumb and like to wonder in places you cant see them so watch my back" Dennis said, "I got you, let loose" I said smirking at Dennis who returned the smirk. Dennis got into a combat crouch and sneaked his way towards the zombie, I was taken aback when he suddenly leaped into the air and pounced on the zombie with a thud. He could do that this entire time? Through the shadows casted by the buildings I could see a molten orange gleam in Dennis's eyes when turned to look at me.

From the shadows I could see a figure creeping out towards Dennis, I was going to warn him but was cut short when the zombie practically unhinged its mouth and let out a terrifying scream. Dennis dodged back towards me startled, I couldn't move or speak, I was in shock. I hadn't expected the zombie to do that, I was so caught up in my thoughts I didnt notice the other zombies waltzing their way right behind me.

"LOOK OUT" Dennis screamed frantically, that snapped right out of my head as I whipped around and drew my gun. I was still trembling, my aim wasnt as good as it could be. I missed 4 shots and exhausted my ammo. I noticed that the monsters screaming was cut short and saw a figure jump over head me. It was Dennis! He came and swiped at the zombies bodies, staggering them back.

"Are you ok Tom?" He said looking at me for a split second with worried eyes before whipping his attention back to the zombies. "Yeah I'm fine! just a little shaken up by whatever the fuck that thing was" I commented. Dennis dashed at one of the zombies slicing its head clean off its shoulders, it fell down and he turned his attention towards the others. He used one of his fingers and drove it into the head of another zombies skull, it fell against the other zombie and Dennis took advantage of their fall. He ran around to the zombies head and stopped it in until it stopped moving.

When it was over, he looked at me. Blood stained his close and he had sort of a sadistic look in his eyes along with the orange gleam. It was quickly replaced with worry as he saw me trembling. He ran over to me and put a hand on my back, his claws converted to normal. "Come on let's go back to the house, I think that's definitely enough for today." I chuckled nervously, "Yeah you're right" I said.

We made it back to the house safely and peacefully, I sat down on the couch tense and exhausted. Dennis came in with a worried look on his face like he knew what was up with me. "Tom, you know I wouldnt ever hurt you right? I know I got a little crazy today but it was just the heat of the moment. I'm sorry I scared you" he apologized, I was taken aback, I know I was trembling but was it that obvious?

"I'm sorry, yeah I was scared. You were like beast back there, while that's a good thing you had this, sadistic look in your eyes. I know you were enjoying yourself but it was so terrifying and thought of you using that against me.." I shivered. I met the eyes of a distraught Dennis, he walked over to me and sat down next to me. He wrapped his arms around my neck and pulled my head into the crook of his shoulder. "I'm so so sorry I got like that, I promise to keep it under check and not enjoy killing as much, and like I said before I would never, ever use this on you. Even of something were to come between us and I end up hating you, I wont hurt you, ok?" His words comforted me, putting a end to my paranoia, "Ok I believe you, thank you for comforting me, I'm sorry as well, I embarrassed for acting like such a baby but I can't help it, fear is to overpowering" I stressed, "Its fine Tom really, let's get over it and move on ok?" Dennis said with a smile, I returned it and nodded my head. We sat there for a good few minutes until we heard a creek come from inside the house.

My heart dropped, the door wasnt locked since there was no key, someone or something is in the house. Both me and Tom were up in seconds with our weapons drawn, I looked to the corner where our stuff was and noticed it was gone, I shook Tom to let him know, now someone is definitely in the house.

We creeped towards the door to the back room, opening it and seeing the stairs it held. We quietly stepped up the stairs and went to the room where we heard more noise come from. I opened the door and stepped in, Tom following behind me. Once inside we looked in front of us and saw no one there, was it coming from.a different room? There were 8 total in this house when I got here first.

I could feel the cold barrel of a gun press against the back of my head.

"Freeze" A gruffly voice said, I felt a whack against the back of my head. I fell to the ground and passed out into blackness.
