This story is based on the medical condition Endocrine Ambiguity and Dissociative Identity Disorder. The objective behind the story is to create awareness about how self-medication or Incomplete knowledge of a condition might lead to disastrous side effects.

A person might possess the genetic makeup of both the sexes caused by the presence of an extra X chromosome. They associate themselves with the gender they were born despite possessing traits of the other gender. They are generally discomfited or estranged by their secondary gender quirks.

However, 90% of people confuse this condition with homosexuality, bisexuality, or gender identity issues. As parents, we should not base our facts on some random books or quacks hearsay which can turn matters worse.

Have we ever contemplated the consequences of putting our children through random treatment without consulting a specialist, how it affects their psyche, and how suffocated would they feel? 

In most cases, our body develops defense mechanisms. If the child is lucky, the defense mechanism would counter the ill-effects but in most cases, it's totally the opposite.

This story is based on the true story of Amell Harper, born with this medical condition and how his foster family misdiagnosed the same as Transvestitism and the incorrect treatment subjected to him.

People, in general, tend to lash out at such people and ostracise them as freaks which ends up hurting them.

As a Criminal Psychologist, Amell Harper's life was unique, not because of his medical condition, but because of how his body and mind developed a unique defense to shield him.

I found the evolution of more than 3 personalities in him.

Let's ride through this cautionary tale of how the wrong step could forever change the life of a helpless, young teen.

Born To Live In The Shadow

Please note this story is being narrated through the views of Amell Harper and the 2 personalities that reside within him. Occasionally Amelia will put in her views as and when required.


Amell Harper: The main protagonist of the story. The good brother, better son, and his only dream is that the family accepts him as their son. (Personality 1)


Amanda Harper: The shy/helpless girl protecting Amell Harper from the embarrassment of living like a girl as home (Personality 2)


Phoenix: (The fierce protector of Amell and Amanda and always giving hope that there is a silver lining in the clouds)(Personality 3)


The Doc: (Another one of the dormant personalities residing under Amell. He loves science and when the doc takes over Amell, he considers himself to be a man of medicine. Sometimes he even takes counseling sessions of Amell to keep a check on his mental health.)(Personality 4)


Adam: Amell's brother. Hates Amell because of something Amell did to him. His only dream in life is to take away everything Amell loves.


Florence: Elder daughter of Don and Jenny Harper. She is unpredictable. Cannot say if she likes Amell or not. However, Adam and Florence are the best of friends.


Amy: Second daughter of Don and Jenny Harper. She respects Amell for what he has done for her. She is the only one in the family who doesn't judge Amell for anything. She only wants to see her brother Amell back.


Helen: Youngest daughter of Don and Jenny Harper. She has no idea about what was happening to Amell. Adam has somehow convinced her to imagine Amell as one of the characters of her fairy tale book and transform Amell to be one of those characters.


Jamie/Abha Harper: Amell and Adam's birth parents. Very supportive of both their son's achievement. They were killed in a car crash.


Don/Jenny Harper: Amell and Adam's foster parents. Don Harper was Jamie Harper's younger brother and will be raising the 2 children till they graduate.


Steve: Amell's friend and his class prefect. He is the team striker and good at it.


Andrew: Captain of the school football team and friend of Amell even though he is 4 years older than Amell. He knows Amell's secret and tries to help him as much as he can.


Navin: Friend of Andrew. He plays football for a club in Goa. Amell was the one who helped him get that opportunity. Navin also knows about Amell's dual life and has a plan to make his life better.


Lucy: Amell's girlfriend. They are truly in love, lucy knows about Amell's medical condition as well as his dual life. However, she loves him for the man he is and not because he was a star player a few years back.


Soniya: Navin's girlfriend. Among the 6 friends of Amell who know about his medical condition and has kept it a secret from the world.


Natasha: Andrew's girlfriend. Another person who knows about Amell and has no problem with whatever life he lives.


Aunty Stella: Jenny Harper's distant aunty. She thinks she knows everything about the whole world but the truth is she is conceited and Arrogant.
